Granny Weatherwax (Protagonist)
Also known as Esme Weatherwax, Esmerelda Weatherwax
Appears from the start
The senior witch of Lancre, proud, formidable, and in this story deeply unsettled by doubts about her own worth and beliefs. When an invitation to a royal celebration seems to pass her by, she takes it as a slight and withdraws, just as the kingdom faces a threat that may need her more than any other.
Nanny Ogg (Supporting)
Also known as Gytha Ogg
Appears from the start
The warm, earthy, practical witch of Lancre, the steady heart of the coven. Shrewder than she lets on, she works to hold the witches together and keep an eye on Granny when the older witch's mood turns dark and dangerous.
Agnes Nitt (Protagonist)
Also known as Perdita, Perdita X
Appears from the start
The large young Lancre witch with a magnificent voice, now settled into the coven. She carries a distinct second self named Perdita inside her head, a sharper, thinner personality who argues with her and notices things she misses. That double-mindedness makes her harder than most to influence or control.
Magrat Garlick (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Queen of Lancre and, as the story opens, newly a mother. Softer and more sentimental than the other witches, she has been living the life of a queen, but the danger to her infant daughter draws her back toward the craft she set aside.
King Verence II (Supporting)
Also known as Verence
Appears from the start
The conscientious, modernizing King of Lancre and Magrat's husband. Keen to be tolerant, progressive, and up to date, he invites a family of self-styled enlightened vampires to his daughter's naming ceremony, a well-meant gesture that opens the door to disaster.
Count Magpyr (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The head of a modern, self-improving family of vampires who have trained themselves out of the old weaknesses, learning to tolerate sunlight, garlic, and holy symbols. Suave, patient, and coldly reasonable, he regards himself as a progressive gentleman and intends to make Lancre and its people quietly his own.
Vlad Magpyr (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The Count's charming, arrogant son, confident in the family's new-found strengths. He takes a particular and predatory interest in Agnes, treating his intended conquest of both her and the kingdom as a matter of course.
Lacrimosa Magpyr (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The Count's fashionable, sardonic daughter, sulky and cruel, chafing under her father's modernizing rules and nostalgic for the old, bloodier ways of vampire life.
Mightily Oats (Supporting)
Also known as Oats
Appears from the start
A young priest of the god Om who travels to Lancre and finds himself caught up in the crisis. Earnest but tormented by doubt, forever arguing with himself over what he truly believes, he is uncertain of his faith at exactly the moment he is called on to act.
Igor (Minor)
Appears from the start
The Magpyrs' long-suffering servant, a traditionalist who takes pride in the proper old-fashioned business of serving vampires, complete with creaking doors and gloomy castles. He disapproves of his masters' fashionable, modernized habits and their contempt for the old rules.
