Cetaganda

By Lois McMaster Bujold

In this entry of the Vorkosigan Saga, Miles Vorkosigan and his cousin Ivan travel to Cetaganda as Barrayaran observers for the state funeral of the Dowager Empress. When a disguised intruder bursts into their docking bay carrying a weapon and a sealed rod, the cousins disarm the figure, who escapes, leaving Miles in possession of an unidentified device stamped with an unfamiliar seal. As Miles quietly investigates the object rather than reporting it through official channels, he is injured in an apparent accident at a diplomatic reception, summoned by an imperial handmaiden who calls him a thief, and drawn into the aftermath of a violent death at the funeral itself, all of which appear connected to the mysterious rod he is now concealing.
