Circus of the Damned recap

After deaths attributed to a group of vampires, Anita helps Dolph's police team identify the masters entering St. Louis and trains young animator Larry Kirkland. Jean-Claude, now master of the city and still linked to Anita by two marks, needs her help against challengers. Anita also begins seeing Richard Zeeman, a teacher who hides his connection to the local werewolves. Ancient vampire Alejandro tries to mark and claim her, while the elderly Mr. Oliver and his companion Karl appear to offer restrained assistance. At the Circus of the Damned, Oliver is revealed as the Earthmover, the oldest and most dangerous rival, whose plan uses violence to undermine both Jean-Claude and public acceptance of vampires. Anita turns the competing bonds to her advantage; Alejandro and Oliver are destroyed, and Jean-Claude keeps the city. Richard admits he is a werewolf, and Anita continues dealing with both his courtship and Jean-Claude's while refusing to be treated as anyone's servant.

Previously: Anita Blake is a St. Louis animator who raises the dead for legal and private clients, and a court-authorized vampire executioner. She killed Nikolaos while solving a series of vampire murders, after which Jean-Claude became the city's master vampire. Jean-Claude placed two mystical marks on Anita and calls her his human servant; she rejects both the title and his claim to control her. Anita later helped police stop an exceptionally powerful zombie created through human sacrifice. Harold Gaynor tried to force her to raise a long-dead ancestor, but Anita used the sacrifice behind his ritual to call a cemetery's dead and end his scheme. Those cases left her wary of the scale of her own power and of every supernatural figure seeking to direct it.

Dolph's Regional Preternatural Investigation Team calls Anita to deaths that appear to involve several vampires feeding together. Such behavior violates both vampire law and the rules imposed by a competent city master. Anita helps interpret the bite evidence while beginning to train Larry Kirkland, a young animator with little field experience. The case suggests either that Jean-Claude cannot control vampires in his territory or that powerful outsiders are deliberately testing his new rule.

Jean-Claude asks Anita to help identify the master vampires moving into St. Louis and challenging him. She does not want to protect his authority, but a struggle among masters threatens ordinary people and overlaps the police killings. Edward also wants the identity of the city's master and pressures Anita for information she will not give him. Outside the investigation, Anita meets Richard Zeeman, a junior-high science teacher, and agrees to date him. His ease around supernatural danger is noticeable but unexplained. Alejandro, an ancient vampire, approaches Anita as both a route to Jean-Claude and a source of power in her own right.

The Circus of the Damned becomes a center of the conflict because it is Jean-Claude's base and brings vampires, shapeshifters, and captive supernatural attractions under one roof. Anita meets Mr. Oliver, an elderly-looking traveler accompanied by Karl Inger. Oliver presents himself as an experienced, moderating figure amid the competing masters. Anita also learns more about the local werewolves through Irving Griswold and Stephen. No faction is entirely open about its loyalties, and Anita continues withholding Jean-Claude's vulnerabilities from Edward while searching for the people responsible for the public deaths.

Alejandro attempts to mark Anita mystically, creating a second vampire claim that conflicts with Jean-Claude's existing bond. The overlap increases the danger but also prevents either vampire from exercising simple control. Attacks involving the Circus's supernatural creatures show that the challengers are willing to use spectacle and civilian risk to weaken Jean-Claude. Larry sees how quickly an apparently technical investigation can become a contest among beings who can compel, transform, or kill humans. Anita keeps working with the police while preparing for a direct assault on the Circus.

Richard's concealed place in the supernatural community becomes clear: he is a werewolf, not the ordinary teacher Anita believed she was dating. His strength and knowledge of the local pack now make sense. Anita objects to the deception but does not regard lycanthropy itself as a reason to abandon him. Meanwhile, the rival masters close in on Jean-Claude, and the apparently separate killings, Alejandro's effort to claim Anita, and the gathering at the Circus prove to be parts of the same struggle for control. Mr. Oliver's full power and purpose remain hidden as the factions assemble for the confrontation.

Mr. Oliver reveals himself as the Earthmover, an ancient vampire of immense power and the secret organizer of the challenge to Jean-Claude. His restrained manner concealed a plan to remove the new master and use public violence to reverse growing human acceptance of legal vampires. Alejandro is a competing master who has tried to claim Anita through additional marks. At the Circus, Anita exploits the conflict among the bonds rather than yielding to either vampire. Alejandro and Oliver are destroyed, and Jean-Claude remains master of St. Louis. Richard admits that he is a werewolf; Anita is angry that he hid it but continues to consider a relationship with him. Jean-Claude also continues pursuing her and asserting the significance of his marks. Anita ends the case alive, still independent in practice, and caught between supernatural alliances that neither the law nor her executioner's weapons can easily sever.

Mr. Oliver is revealed as the Earthmover, an ancient vampire of extraordinary power and the hidden architect of the challenge to Jean-Claude. His mild appearance and stated wish to limit violence concealed a plan to remove Jean-Claude and use public deaths to turn opinion against the legal acceptance of vampires. Alejandro is another master seeking control and has tried to claim Anita through his own marks. At the Circus of the Damned, the rival plans converge. Anita uses the competing supernatural bonds rather than submitting to either claimant, and the confrontation ends with Alejandro and Oliver destroyed. Jean-Claude remains master of St. Louis, with his position strengthened by Anita's actions. Richard reveals that he is a werewolf, explaining his strength and his connections within the city's lycanthrope community. Anita is angry that he concealed it but does not reject him merely for being a shapeshifter. Jean-Claude also continues his pursuit of her, leaving Anita between two men and still resisting the idea that mystical marks give either vampire a right to direct her life. Larry survives his first major exposure to this work and remains Anita's trainee.
