City of Fallen Angels characters
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Clary Fray (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
Sixteen, training seriously as a Shadowhunter for the first time and living with her mother again now that Jocelyn is awake. The war is over, her father is dead, and she is free to be with Jace; the difficulty is that Jace has begun avoiding her without explaining why.
Jace Lightwood (Supporting)
Also known as Jace Herondale, Jace Wayland
First appears in chapter 2
Raised by Valentine, born a Herondale, and now living as a Lightwood at the New York Institute. He is not sleeping, he is training past the point of sense, and he is pulling away from Clary for reasons he will not give, convinced that whatever his father did to him before he was born has not finished with him.
Simon Lewis (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A vampire who can walk in daylight and carries a Mark that punishes anyone who harms him sevenfold, which makes him the most interesting thing in the city to several people he has never met. He is playing gigs with his band, dating Isabelle and Maia at the same time without either knowing, and no longer welcome in his own house.
Isabelle Lightwood (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The Lightwood daughter, hunting regularly again and keeping her grief over her youngest brother behind a hard, flippant manner. She has started seeing Simon, on the understanding that neither of them is to take it seriously.
Alec Lightwood (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Openly with Magnus now and travelling with him between assignments, which has given him time to work out that his partner is several centuries old and he is not. It is the first thing in his life he has had no idea how to fight.
Magnus Bane (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The High Warlock of Brooklyn, immortal, wealthy and in a relationship with a mortal teenager whose questions about his past he mostly deflects. He is called in whenever the Institute meets something it cannot identify, and he does not always say everything he knows.
Jocelyn Fray (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Clary's mother, awake after more than a year unconscious and rebuilding a life with Luke. She is uneasy about Jace in a way she cannot fully justify, because of what she saw Valentine do to a child once before, and she keeps things from Clary for what she considers good reasons.
Luke Garroway (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Werewolf pack leader, bookshop owner, and about to marry Jocelyn. He acts as the city's Downworlder representative and is drawn into the investigation when Shadowhunter bodies begin turning up in ways that suggest a Downworlder killer and a deliberate provocation.
Maia Roberts (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A werewolf of Luke's pack, working at a Downworlder bar and studying when she can. She has been seeing Simon, does not know he is also seeing Isabelle, and does not talk about the boy who bit her and left her to become what she is.
Jordan Kyle (Supporting)
Also known as Kyle
First appears in chapter 4
A young musician who talks his way into Simon's band and then into offering him a room, at a point when Simon has nowhere else to go. He is friendly, evasive about his own history, keeps punishing training hours, and is clearly not telling Simon why he turned up when he did.
Camille Belcourt (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 6
A vampire of great age and beauty who led the New York clan before Raphael, and who has come back to the city with plans of her own. She has Simon brought to her, tells him he is being hunted, and offers him a place at her side in exchange for his loyalty.
Maureen Brown (Minor)
First appears in chapter 4
A small, shy girl who follows Simon's band and idolises him, and who is friends with the sister of one of the band members. She keeps turning up where Simon is, and he keeps failing to pay attention to her.
Lilith (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 16
The veiled woman directing a cult that meets in a disused Brooklyn church, gathering followers who believe they are serving something greater and submitting to experiments in her name. She is far older than any demon the Shadowhunters routinely deal with, and what she is attempting has been tried before.
Jonathan Morgenstern (Antagonist)
Also known as Sebastian
First appears in chapter 19
Valentine's son by blood, given demon blood before he was born, who passed himself off as Sebastian Verlac in Idris and was killed at the end of the war. His body went into a river and was never recovered.
