Still barely trained, still inventing runes nobody has recorded, and now determined to reach the Shadowhunter homeland of Idris because a warlock there may be able to wake her mother. She has been told that Jace is her brother and has not found any way to make herself believe it in the part of her that matters.

Valentine's son by upbringing and, as far as anyone knows, by blood. He is going to Idris with the Lightwoods and is prepared to do almost anything to keep Clary out of the war, including deceiving her. He believes there is something wrong in him that his father put there, and he does not say so out loud.

Now a vampire who can walk in daylight, which makes him unique and therefore interesting to people he would rather not interest. He is still Clary's closest friend and still the person most likely to be arrested, exiled or used as leverage in a country where Downworlders are not welcome.

A werewolf pack leader who was born a Shadowhunter, exiled after he was bitten, and has spent years keeping Jocelyn and Clary safe. Returning to Idris means returning to a country that threw him out, and to a Clave that will not want to hear what he has to say about arming Downworlders.

The Lightwood daughter, travelling to Idris with her family as the Clave gathers for war. Capable, blunt and fiercely attached to her brothers, she is one of the few people who will say to Clary's face what everyone else is thinking.

The eldest Lightwood child, still carrying his feelings for a warlock he cannot mention in front of his parents, and still the first to volunteer for anything dangerous. Idris is where his family's history and their old Circle membership are common knowledge.

The youngest Lightwood, nine years old, brought to Alicante with the rest of the family. He reads constantly, notices more than the adults credit him with, and wants very much to be allowed to help.

Clary's mother, unconscious since she drank a potion to put herself beyond Valentine's reach. Everything Clary does in this book proceeds from the search for something that will wake her, and from the fact that the answers about her past are locked inside her.

Clary's father, holding two of the three Mortal Instruments and hunting the third. He has demanded that the Clave submit to him and is prepared to make his point with demons, which no Shadowhunter has ever been able to command before.

Luke's older sister, who lives alone in a narrow house in Alicante and takes Clary in. She was married once to a Shadowhunter who left her, she stopped speaking to her brother when he became a werewolf, and she has kept a great deal of the previous generation's history to herself.

A Shadowhunter of about Jace's age staying with the Penhallow family in Alicante, a cousin from the Institute in Paris whose own household was destroyed. He is charming, unusually helpful to Clary, an excellent rider and fighter, and interested in her in a way she finds flattering and slightly odd.

The Clave's new Inquisitor, appointed after his predecessor's death. He is genial in manner and ruthless in method, and his first significant act in the book is to decide what to do with a vampire the Clave never agreed to admit into Idris.

The High Warlock of Brooklyn, found in Idris where Clary expected to find someone else. He is the only person likely to be able to brew what Jocelyn needs, he wants paying, and he is unusually reluctant to discuss his own history with Valentine's generation.

The former tutor of the New York Institute, who betrayed Clary and Jace to Valentine in exchange for release from the curse that kept him indoors. He has been in Idris since, and knows more about the Mortal Instruments and Valentine's intentions than anyone else still alive.

An angel, held captive for years beneath the ruins of a country house and bound so that he cannot speak or free himself. He communicates in visions rather than words, showing what he has seen rather than explaining it, and what he has seen includes the experiments his captor performed.

The angel from whom all Shadowhunters descend, who gave the first of them the three Mortal Instruments and has not been seen since. He can be summoned only by someone holding all three, at the lake where the first Nephilim were made, and he is bound to grant the summoner a single request.
