Seventeen, a trained Shadowhunter now, and the one thing her brother wants more than the destruction of the Clave. She carries a blade forged for her family generations ago, and the plan she eventually settles on depends on being close enough to Jonathan for him to believe he has won.

Free of Lilith at last and carrying heavenly fire in his body, which he cannot control, discharge or safely touch anyone through. He is the only weapon anybody has that Jonathan's Endarkened cannot simply absorb, and learning to use it without killing the people around him is the whole of his life at the moment.

A Daylighter vampire, no longer protected by the Mark of Cain he traded away, and therefore as vulnerable as anyone else in a war between Shadowhunters. He is with Isabelle, banned from most of the places the fighting is planned, and determined to be useful anyway.

The last Lightwood daughter, hard and capable and openly with Simon now, which the Clave regards as another Downworlder problem. She has lost one brother already and has no intention of losing anyone else.

Jace's sworn partner, leading missions and holding his family together while trying and failing to get Magnus to speak to him again. What he did behind Magnus's back is not something either of them has found a way past.

The High Warlock of Brooklyn, no longer with Alec and still working with the Shadowhunters because the alternative is worse. He knows more about the realm Jonathan is drawing power from than he has ever admitted, for reasons that have to do with his own father.

Clary's mother, who has now watched her son destroy two generations of her family and is done hoping he can be reached. She gives Clary a Morgenstern blade she kept hidden for years, and tells her what it was made for.

Werewolf pack leader, Downworlder Council member, and the adult most likely to be shouted down in Alicante for saying that the Clave will need Downworlders again. He is recovering from wounds taken when Jonathan turned the first of the Endarkened.

Valentine's son, at the head of an army of Endarkened Shadowhunters and destroying Institutes one after another. He is unhurried about it. What he actually wants is not conquest in the ordinary sense, and it involves his sister.

A twelve-year-old Shadowhunter of the Los Angeles Institute, small, fair and already a serious fighter, who carries her family's ancient sword. She is closest to Julian Blackthorn, and she is present when Jonathan's forces come for her home.

The second-eldest Blackthorn child of the Los Angeles Institute, about Emma's age and abruptly responsible for a houseful of younger siblings. Quiet, watchful and much steadier than a boy of twelve should have to be.

A werewolf of the Praetor Lupus, Simon's flatmate and guard, who has finally begun to repair things with Maia. The Praetor's house is one of the first places Jonathan's forces go looking for allies of the Clave.

A werewolf of the New York pack, level-headed and increasingly the person the pack turns to while Luke is occupied with the Council and his injuries.

The Silent Brother who speaks aloud, older than he looks and connected to the Herondale and Carstairs families by a history he tells only in pieces. He is the closest thing the Clave has to an expert on heavenly fire, and he is the one who helps Jace live with it.

The Consul, head of the Clave, running a war from a city filling with refugees. She is more reasonable than her predecessors and still bound by a Council that would rather blame Downworlders than change anything.

A Prince of Hell and the ruler of the burnt-out demon realm Jonathan has been drawing on. He is courteous, exact and entirely transactional, he was already owed something before any of this began, and he is not in a hurry.
