A wounded Confederate soldier recovering in a military hospital near the end of the Civil War. Sickened by battle and convinced that returning to the army would destroy what remains of him, he decides to walk home across North Carolina to Ada and Cold Mountain.

A Charleston-bred minister's daughter living at Black Cove farm near Cold Mountain. Her father has died, the war has isolated the region, and her ornamental education has left her unable to feed herself or manage the land. She waits without knowing whether Inman will return.

Ada's late father, an educated and idealistic minister who moved with her from Charleston to the mountain community for his health. His death leaves Ada with Black Cove but without the practical knowledge needed to sustain it.

A resourceful young mountain woman who comes to Black Cove when Ada is near starvation. She understands planting, animals, weather, and the physical work of a farm, and proposes a partnership based on shared labor rather than becoming Ada's servant.

A disgraced preacher encountered by Inman on the road while trying to dispose of a woman he has made pregnant. Inman stops him and forces him to face public exposure; Veasey then attaches himself to Inman's journey, talkative and unreliable.

A very young member of Teague's Home Guard. His age and slight build do not make him harmless; he participates in the unit's pursuit of deserters and carries a gun with the authority the war has given him.
