Matty and Deborah's long-absent brother. As a mischievous young man he fled after a conflict with his stern father and later went to India. Matty continues to hope that news of him, or Peter himself, may one day return.

Matty's loyal maid, direct and practical in ways that her mistress is not. Though the Cranford ladies worry about servants becoming too independent, Martha's attachment to Matty is personal rather than merely contractual.
