The Dragon Reborn, a young man from the Two Rivers fated to face the Dark One at the Last Battle. He wields the male One Power, and has lately done what all believed impossible, cleansing saidin of the Dark One's ancient taint so that men may channel without going mad, though few yet accept it is true. Feared and hunted, he has bound the Aiel to him, taken thrones, and killed several of the Forsaken, growing colder and warier as the war grinds on and enemies press on every side.

A ta'veren gambler and reluctant hero from the Two Rivers, lucky beyond reason, carrying the memories of dead generals and a medallion that turns aside the One Power. Having escaped Seanchan-held Ebou Dar, he is now on the run in the north, hiding among a traveling menagerie show while warily keeping company with Tuon, the Seanchan heir he carried off, whom prophecy says he must marry.

A blacksmith and wolfbrother from the Two Rivers, a reluctant battle lord able to speak with wolves. Consumed by the need to free his wife, Faile, from the Shaido Aiel who hold her captive, he has grown grim and single-minded, willing to consider bargains and measures he once would have refused in order to get her back.

The young Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, an innkeeper's daughter of surprising strength and discipline. Underestimated by the sisters who raised her to be a figurehead, she has instead taken real command of the army besieging Tar Valon, determined to bring down the usurping Amyrlin, Elaida, and reunite the divided White Tower.

The former Wisdom of Emond's Field, now an Aes Sedai and wife to Lan, fierce, stubborn, and a gifted Healer. She stood at the heart of Rand's cleansing of saidin and remains one of the few who will speak plainly to the Dragon Reborn, impatient with the schemes of the sisters gathered around him.

Carried off from Ebou Dar by Mat Cauthon, she now travels with him, watchful and unbowed, aware that prophecy binds their fates together even as their peoples are at war.

Perrin's wife, a bold Saldaean noblewoman with a fierce temper, held captive among the Shaido Aiel far from her husband. Proud and resourceful, she works from within her captivity to survive and to resist, while Perrin drives himself to reach her.
