Cryoburn

By Lois McMaster Bujold

Cryoburn finds Barrayaran Imperial Auditor Miles Vorkosigan drugged and separated from his bodyguard during a kidnapping at a cryonics industry conference on the planet Kibou-daini; the sedative instead triggers severe hallucinations, and he escapes into the underground cryocombs before being found and sheltered by an almost-twelve-year-old boy, Jin Sato, who lives in a hidden former cryonics facility. While Miles works to reach Barrayaran authorities without exposing Jin's refuge, his Armsman Roic is held by a group claiming the kidnapping as anti-cryonics political action, and it emerges that Jin's family has already been shattered by the planet's cryonics industry: his father died after being denied timely treatment, and his mother, Lisa Sato, was frozen after a protest campaign and arrest. Investigating the local cryonics corporations behind his abduction, Miles begins to suspect that whatever Lisa Sato's group once discovered was deliberately suppressed.
