Crystal World

By B. V. Larson

The twentieth entry in Undying Mercenaries pulls James McGill off leave when Galina Turov calls in an old debt: she wants him to find the vanished former consul Drusus, then arrange for her to be publicly killed so she can disappear before the ruling council forces her into the consulship. McGill's search for Drusus uncovers that the former consul is being held indefinitely, his mind preserved without trial, and an attempt to reach him ends with McGill killing a suspicious Intelligence officer and going on the run. Reunited with Galina, he agrees to her plan: since a witnessed assassination would let her revive quietly elsewhere and force the council to choose another consul, McGill stages her public death on Dust World with the help of local power broker Boudica. With Galina dead and her revival pending in secret, McGill finds himself drawn into Boudica's own ambitions and back under official suspicion as her father's agents search for what became of her.
