John resigns from Candle Scholar Tower, visits Earth, and learns that his altered soul contains two incomplete dragons and can sustain aspects. When Unmaking crystal infects Candle Scholar Tower, he destroys the infestation and becomes the dual aspect Life and Death. His new authority disrupts both conception and the passage of souls until he corrects it. He retreats to Sutton Farm with Ellie to preserve his identity, but leaves in spring to investigate signs of another possible dragon.

Their allies include Rabia, the world spirit who administers the Valley, and Ferdie, John's bull companion and a leader among its beasts. The Valley has become John's divine kingdom, linking his authority to its people and systems. John has already killed a dragon and retains power connected to that victory. The dead dragon's sister rules the Resplendent Empire, a multiworld power that uses draconic influence to control its subjects. John and the Empress are enemies. He has also survived the Magical Millennium Meeting, where the Candle Scholar Tower team confronted hostile factions and the threat of a devil incursion. As the final results approach, John wants to protect Ellie, his friends, and the Valley without returning to the ruthless identity shaped by his earlier war. His long-term hope remains a quiet life on the farm, but the conflict with the Resplendent Empire stands between him and that retirement.

John, Ellie, and the Candle Scholar Tower team return from the Millennium Meeting. The dragon Empress offers peace, but John sees that her soul is failing and rejects her. Candle Scholar Tower is declared the winner, receiving resource worlds, premier library access, ancient ruin coordinates, and a qualification that could let John pursue power beyond the tenth rank. He refuses the one-way opportunity because Ellie could not accompany him. Back at Candle Scholar Tower, the Empire's pressure is driving away trade and students. John gives the resource worlds to the tower, retains several artifacts, and closes most outside access while he prepares a response. In the Valley, Rabia reports that resurrection, exploration, settlement, and void travel are all expanding. John tells Ellie that he believes only he can stop the Empress, while promising himself he will not become the person he was during his previous war. The Valley's leaders pledge themselves to a campaign aimed at dismantling the Empire rather than destroying its worlds. John eventually learns to match the flame to each subject's strength, freeing a captain and three guards. The survivors retain a flame that imitates his apparent draconic aura, allowing them to pass as loyal Imperial servants. From them he learns how Persis imports slaves and gradually converts them into adherents. In Port Clay, John targets the machinery of that system. He places protective sparks in incoming slaves, removes the slave master, and converts the vice slave master and palace guard captain into allies. The former vice slave master takes control of the operation, while John replaces the city's health inspectors and brings mandatory screening under his influence. Port Clay's enormous slave intake now quietly spreads protection from draconic corruption, giving John a concealed network inside the Empire.

John enters Elmra disguised as a slave and is assigned to its forge system. He discovers a world where accelerated mana production consumes workers and materials alike. Lucia's guard quietly spares him from her dangerous blade experiments, and John's exceptional smithing brings him before her father, the forge overseer. The overseer mistakes John for the return of a rival dragon and reveals that his family belongs to that dragon's surviving bloodline. John recruits him to build an internal coup. Port Clay begins sending protected slaves to Elmra, where they form a concealed legion. Imperial scrutiny follows. John avoids exposing the plot, uses the Eternal Flame to strengthen the city's smiths, and begins guiding Lucia's efforts to become a blacksmith. She accepts a dangerous transformation that combines Eternal Flame with the dragon power in John's shadow. She survives with a mixed soul flame that can redirect other dragonkin without the agony of direct purification. Her guard accepts John's war blessing and grows stronger. Lucia's presence begins changing the visiting investigators. When a resistant Inquisitor attacks, John kills him and reveals himself to the two survivors. The High Inquisitor and his subordinate accept the mixed flame and help conceal the death. By the end of the preparations, the ten-thousand-soldier slave legion is armed, faith-linked, and ordered into the first wave bound for Resplendent.

The slave legion enters Resplendent with John and the forge overseer. John records the world's coordinates, leaves the legion under Lucia's guard, and confronts the Empress in her capital. His attack reveals that she is also Resplendent's world spirit, making a careless victory dangerous to the world itself. Ellie, Rabia, Ferdie, allied beasts, and adventurer teams arrive through a distributed portal network and engage the Imperial army. The Empress invokes an Abyssal pact, but the greater devils refuse to fight John. The enemy elven supreme mage calls on an ancient god, which also declines to oppose John and abandons the mage. John destroys the mage's body and devil soul permanently. He then takes the Empress into the void, destroys her body, and traps her surviving dragon soul beside her brother's remnant in his shadow. The Eternal Flame shatters her consciousness while leaving the immortal remnants bound. John transfers Resplendent's world authority to Rabia. He offers the dragonkin a final choice under a world-spanning cleansing flame, and those who accept survive free of the Empress's corruption. Elmra and Persis are purified as well. All three worlds join John's divine kingdom as the Eternal Empire. John abolishes slavery and the caste system, appoints a new emperor and council, and leaves Rabia to help administer the transition.

With the war over, John gives Thomas land for an independent farm and resigns from Candle Scholar Tower so his conflicts with higher powers will not endanger it. He and Ellie travel through the Divine Market and then return to Millennium City, where Kevin receives them and the head librarian's husband becomes their guide. Mina, the head librarian, confirms that she and her husband originated on Earth. The Prime Administrator grants John and Ellie a brief Earth visit in exchange for an unspecified future service. John reunites with his brother Isaac and learns that his family is safe, but his divine presence destabilizes Earth and forces an early departure. Mina later explains that Earth is a real soul-level construct. She also finds two incomplete dragon souls within John's shadow and concludes that his dragon-altered soul can contain powers ordinary people cannot. At the Temple of Ancient Gods, the gate pressure completes Ellie's transformation into lightning and she qualifies as a low ancient god. Their guide reveals that he anchors an aspect of truth and explains that anchors preserve an aspect's identity. John and Ellie leave their costly registration decision unresolved.

The raven god explains that the Eternal Flame can anchor its bearer through many believers and may allow John to consume divinities until he becomes an aspect. John and Ellie accompany the raven god's associate into the battlefield, where defenders contain the Unmaking behind a series of walls. The Unmaking are parasitic crystal entities capable of occupying dead dragon bodies. An avatar empowered by the aspect of change destroys one such body. The group realizes that a stored Unmaking corpse at Candle Scholar Tower may have been exposed to mana, which causes the crystal to multiply rapidly. During an assault on the battlefield, John opens a portal, destroys a vast concentration of crystal, and returns with Ellie and the associate. They find a tower master and three assistants infected, with the structure itself compromised. John evacuates the uninfected occupants, removes the entire tower into the void, and confronts a developing nest below it. By studying the crystal's linked destruction and regrowth, he recognizes his own domains as the paired aspect Life and Death. He extinguishes the infestation's life force, restores the infected people, repairs the tower, and returns it. The outbreak is ended, but John has become the holder of two fundamental laws.

John returns to the Valley with Ellie and tries to ground himself in farm work. His two trapped dragon souls allow him to sustain Life and Death together, while Ellie helps keep the laws from replacing his personal identity. He helps Thomas establish a farm and home. Thomas marries his partner, and Ferdie and his wife welcome a daughter. As the Eternal Flame's explorers reach inhabited worlds, casualties and diplomatic conflicts increase. John authorizes an Order divided among explorers, Lore Keepers, and knights, with Rabia implementing the system. He then discovers that souls have accumulated under his authority on an immense scale. The raven god helps him understand that his linked aspects have stopped both the fading of souls and the beginning of new life. John restarts conception, permits the dead to pass into the void, and declines to create reincarnation. John withdraws from direct command, places the Order under civilian leadership, seals the Valley from outsiders, and hides Sutton Farm while he learns restraint. Ellie and ordinary farm life remain his anchors through the winter. By spring he is steadier and working the land again. The aspect of change avatar brings evidence of a cult deity that may be a hidden dragon. John joins the avatar and the raven god's associate to investigate, intending to return home for dinner.
