In short (whole book)

Riley Cruz turns a renovated warehouse into a home and headquarters, only to face forced coven supervision, a hostile sale of the building, and violence surrounding Max Volkov's shifter summit. Sato sends her after a hell-forged chalice once carried by Amelia Hunt, the woman who raised her, while Helen creates an independent coven to protect Riley from Martha Matthews. Evidence eventually links Owen Hughes and Martha to blood-rune attacks. Riley accepts her relationship with Volkov on her own terms and is wounded protecting him before he defeats and kills Hughes. Riley, Helen, Nash, and Tegan then expose Martha's distribution of concealed rune devices, leading Martha's bodyguard to restrain her and turn her over to Celeste. The new coven remains independent, but a stronger elemental-magic user is still at large. Riley must now decode Amelia's stories to find the chalice, while the identity of a child sought in a demon prophecy and the nature of Riley's magic remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Riley Cruz survived control by Carl and became an artifact retriever with a rare ability to pass wards and interfere with magic. Amelia Hunt raised her, and the silver-and-copper ring Amelia left behind remains one of Riley's few links to her past. Riley recovered a demon spellbook, but the aftermath left her apartment uninhabitable after a magical bombing. During a confrontation with Phoebe Thompson, Riley redirected magic and learned that Phoebe and Robert Thompson had used a stolen blood-tracing spell whose trail led to Kansas City. Riley kept the physical map from the Enclave to prevent official scrutiny of her powers. She begins this book allied with witches Helen, Alice, Janice, and Bea; technical investigator Dez; security ally Nash Mitchell; Nash's demon-hosting rooster, Garth; and Kansas City pack alpha Max Volkov. Martha Matthews continues to seek coven authority over Riley, while Cage Sato remains Riley's Enclave contact. Zara Bellarose is a prior adversary whose current activities are unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Riley opens a renovated warehouse as both her home and the headquarters for her artifact-retrieval team. Helen cannot explain the new black markings on Riley's ring, although blood magic is one possibility, and Riley's touch still disrupts spells. Martha Matthews arrives with Alona, Cersei, and an unidentified bodyguard whose presence visibly troubles Tegan. Martha claims to be investigating the bombing, but Riley and her allies distrust her motives. Riley also conceals the blood-tracing map from Cage Sato because it could expose her unusual abilities. The Enclave then approves the Witch's Council request to place Riley under a registered coven's supervision. Celeste is to arrange evaluation and training under Martha within ten days, while Sato keeps Riley available for high-priority Enclave work. Martha adds another threat by revealing that the warehouse is for sale and indicating that she wants it for her own coven. Riley resolves to protect both her independence and the truth about her magic.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Dez traces the warehouse to Owen Hughes, a former Kansas City Pack beta who opposed Max Volkov's rise to alpha and later joined the Denver pack. Because Hughes is unlikely to sell to Volkov, Dez submits an offer at twice the asking price and interferes with Martha's financing to slow her competing purchase. Meanwhile, an older pack member is attacked, and Craig Ward begins investigating the apparent robbery. Volkov invites Riley to attend the Shifter Summit reception beside him, understanding that a gathering dominated by alphas may trigger her past trauma. The witches face pressure of their own: Helen, Alice, Janice, and Bea perform Council-ordered community service after their protests against coven authority. Helen quietly pursues a path that could keep Riley out of Martha's control and asks Riley to delay Celeste. The group also studies Riley's ring, with Janice identifying copper as a strong magical conduit. Amelia Hunt may have intended the ring to help Riley reach her power, but that remains only a theory.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Riley enters the Shifter Summit reception despite a severe trauma response, with Volkov ready to leave if she chooses. Tegan explains that Volkov assigns leadership by skill: she serves as beta for strategy and judgment, while Zane Michaels manages pack finances. Zane describes Volkov's effort to give unranked shifters a peaceful way to challenge abusive leaders. Owen Hughes, acting for Denver's absent alpha, rejects Dez's warehouse offer and appears to favor Martha as buyer. Volkov then tells Riley that he has felt a one-sided mate bond with her for nearly a decade. Riley's immunity to magic prevents her from sensing it, and he kept it secret to protect her freedom to choose. As she processes the disclosure, vandalism against shifter businesses begins during the summit. Dez discovers a secretive lienholder attached to the warehouse shortly after Riley's lease began, suggesting the sale pressure may have been planned. Martha and Hughes then enter the warehouse without proper notice and threaten Riley's tenancy. Garth drives them back, but Hughes promises to return, leaving Riley's new home under direct threat.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Riley finds a glowing wooden die marked with runes beneath a warehouse sink; its magic vanishes when she touches it. Cage Sato reports that Phoebe Thompson escaped during an attack on an Enclave convoy, then assigns Riley to recover a hell-forged chalice involved in a prophecy about sacrificing a child linked to water and air. The vanished specialist who carried the chalice was Amelia Hunt, the woman Riley knew as her mother. Amelia left an unfiled will containing the first of four vault clues, apparently encoded in childhood stories she told Riley while using another identity for Enclave work. Volkov admits that he intercepted Phoebe, arranged the removal of her memories and access to power, and released her to protect Riley's secret. Seeking leverage, Riley enters Martha's home and sees a runed cube matching the warehouse device, but a masked shifter steals it and injures her. Only Riley can see its smooth runes. Helen then confronts Celeste with evidence of the Council's security failures, including the blood-tracing map and missing samples. Celeste authorizes Helen's independent coven and accepts Riley as its apprentice, blocking Martha's attempt to take custody of her.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

The newly authorized coven begins drafting the rules needed to preserve its status, and Riley recognizes that her feelings for Volkov are her own rather than a product of his one-sided bond. Attacks on shifter businesses continue as Volkov prepares to argue for representation for unranked shifters. Riley identifies her masked assailant's tattoo as a wolf-purity symbol also worn by Carl. Hughes and four followers then invade and ransack the warehouse, but Dez, Nash, and Garth help drive them out. A bakery bombing uses the same magical tripwire method as the destruction of Riley's apartment, and the targeted owner is branded a traitor for marrying a witch. Riley concludes that Hughes is trying to provoke Volkov into a challenge and persuades Volkov to delay retaliation while they investigate a possible alliance between Hughes and a witch. Tegan finds that Hughes is turning pack members against Volkov and has built an underground fighting record. Riley also sees that magic is concealing or healing Hughes's injured eye. The numbered story closes with Tegan producing a runed wooden cube recovered from the bakery rubble. It matches the device stolen from Martha's home, creating a physical link between the bombing campaign and Martha's unexplained rune objects, although her exact role is not yet proved.

How does it end? (ending)

Volkov kills Owen Hughes in the alpha challenge and remains leader of the Kansas City pack after Riley intercepts a silver blade meant for him. Hughes's enhanced shifting, concealed injury, and other advantages came from externally supplied blood and elemental magic, leaving the more capable practitioner unidentified. Riley and her allies prove that Martha Matthews sold concealed rune devices to Hughes and connect the operation to three bombings. Martha's own bodyguard restrains her, and Celeste takes her into custody. Stitch Witch Bitches preserves its independence and receives more time to finish its required evaluation and training procedures, with Riley remaining an apprentice. The warehouse's ownership and unknown lienholder are still unresolved. Riley's next priority is decoding the stories Amelia Hunt used to conceal the route to a vault and its hell-forged chalice. The prophecy's water-and-air child is still unidentified, and Riley's ring, origins, and magic-disrupting ability remain unexplained. Her partnership with Volkov is openly affirmed but remains a choice she makes for herself.
