A DDF pilot from Detritus and one of the strongest human cytonics alive, able to hear across the void and to teleport ships by will. Having met a delver mind to mind at Starsight and survived it, she is convinced that the only way to end the threat to her people is to understand where delvers come from, which means going into the place cytonics travel through rather than merely jumping across it. Impulsive, proud of her own bravado, and increasingly aware of how little of the galaxy she actually understands.

The artificial intelligence who has flown with Spensa since she found his wrecked starfighter on Detritus. His ship is gone and he now occupies a small drone body with a fraction of the capability he once had. He talks constantly, insists on his own non-sentience less and less convincingly, and is preoccupied with what he is allowed to want.

Flightleader of Skyward Flight, back on Detritus, and a cytonic himself. He keeps a mental link with Spensa when the distance and the strangeness of the nowhere allow it, and carries the defense of the planet while she is away.

The Superiority official who staged the delver attack on Starsight and used it to seize sweeping wartime authority. He commands a fleet, controls the supply of taynix hyperdrives, and intends to make delvers into a weapon he alone can aim.

A human who styles himself an interdimensional explorer and has been wandering the nowhere for longer than he can account for. Grandiose, hearty and full of advice, he knows the fragments and their hazards better than anyone Spensa meets and attaches himself to her as guide and partner.

Leader of the Broadsiders, one of the pirate crews that scratch a living among the fragments of the nowhere. Shrewd, physically imposing and unsentimental, she judges newcomers strictly by what they can do for her people.

A Broadsider pilot who flies alongside Spensa once she is taken into the crew, easygoing about the strangeness of life in the nowhere and matter-of-fact about the fact that nobody there remembers much of where they came from.

A Broadsider of a crystalline species who communicates through vibration and resonance rather than speech, and who becomes one of Spensa's steadier companions in the crew.
