The Narrator (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

An unnamed supercargo aboard a merchant vessel who begins his account while dependent on morphine and preparing to end his life. During the First World War, a German raider captures his ship in the Pacific, but he escapes alone in a small boat and later encounters something that destroys his confidence in ordinary reality.

The Sea Creature

Also known as Dagon

Appears from the start

A colossal amphibious being glimpsed beside an ancient carved monolith in a newly exposed tract of the Pacific seabed. The narrator associates it with humanity's oldest traditions of sea gods, though the account does not establish its identity with certainty.
