Dark Days characters

By Derek Landy

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Valkyrie Cain (Protagonist)

Also known as Stephanie Edgley

Appears from the start

Fourteen and working without her partner. Since Skulduggery was lost through the portal she has kept the cases going on her own, largely by refusing to accept that anything is impossible, and she has made enemies faster than allies. She is a competent Elemental, a better fighter than she was, and increasingly willing to do things she would once have argued about. The Sanctuary's new administration regards her as a nuisance to be managed, and there are people who would like to get hold of the last descendant of the Ancients.

Skulduggery Pleasant (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The skeleton detective, missing since he drove a Faceless One back through the portal at Aranmore Farm and went with it. He is not dead, because he was never exactly alive, but he is on the other side of a door nobody knows how to open, in a dead world belonging to the dark gods, and he has been there a long time.

Tanith Low (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The English sword-fighter who can walk on walls, and the one person who has stayed at Valkyrie's shoulder through the whole business of trying to get Skulduggery back. Blunt, funny and entirely uninterested in the Sanctuary's opinion of any of it.

Ghastly Bespoke (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The scarred tailor who can turn his skin to stone, and one of Skulduggery's oldest friends. He fought beside him in the war and has been quietly unbearable company since Aranmore.

Fletcher Renn (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

The Teleporter, no longer untrained and still entirely pleased with himself. He can step anywhere he can picture, which makes him the most useful person in Ireland and a target for everyone who wants a door opened. He and Valkyrie have grown closer than either of them expected.

China Sorrows (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The keeper of Dublin's great private library, who sells information and rarely gives it. She has her own reasons to help with this particular problem and her own reasons not to say what they are.

Thurid Guild (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

The Grand Mage who took over the Irish Sanctuary after Aranmore Farm: rigid, suspicious and convinced that Skulduggery Pleasant and everyone associated with him is a danger to the peace. He has forbidden any attempt at a rescue, and there is something behind his hostility that he will not discuss.

Solomon Wreath (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

A Necromancer with a cane and impeccable manners, representing an order that draws its magic from death and shadow and that most sorcerers distrust. He is courteous to Valkyrie, generous with his time, and openly interested in recruiting her, and he explains what his people are waiting for far more slowly than he could.

Erskine Ravel (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

One of the Dead Men, the small unit of saboteurs Skulduggery served with during the war against Mevolent. Charming, level-headed and a natural diplomat, he has spent the peace doing quieter work and comes back for this.

Anton Shudder (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

One of the Dead Men, a grim and silent man who keeps a hotel that moves from place to place at midnight. Something lives inside him that he releases only when there is no better option.

Dexter Vex (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

One of the Dead Men, cheerful and unhurried in a way that suggests he has been shot at often enough to stop finding it interesting. He has spent the years since the war chasing the remnants of Mevolent's people around the world.

Billy-Ray Sanguine (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

The Texan killer with hollows where his eyes should be, who travels through solid stone and works for whoever pays. He has something Valkyrie needs, and he is not inclined to hand it over.

Lord Vile (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 20

A Necromancer who fought for Mevolent in black armour and was one of the most feared things in a war full of them, then vanished before it ended. The armour was recovered and lost again, and now someone is wearing it and killing in it. Nobody knows who is inside.

The Torment (Minor)

First appears in chapter 16

The ancient recluse who despises ordinary people and can take the shape of an enormous spider. He has spent a very long time outliving everyone who might have moved against him.

Kenspeckle Grouse (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

The irritable old scientist behind the derelict cinema, who repairs everyone who comes back broken and has been telling Valkyrie to stop for years. He thinks the rescue plan is madness and helps with it anyway.

Madame Mist (Minor)

First appears in chapter 25

A veiled, softly spoken sorcerer who arrives on the Sanctuary's Council. She speaks for the Children of the Spider, an order few people know anything about, and she says as little as the situation permits.
