Dark Origins recap

By J.N. Chaney, Terry Maggert

Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.

In short (whole book)

Renewed Deeper activity draws Dash and the Cygnus Realm into battles over gate technology, captured constructs, and a new organic-machine infection. Jameson survives capture and torture, then begins recovering with a Polaris AI patterned on Dash. An encoded ancient memory raises questions about a signal and the Second Dreaming, while a failed peace attempt ends with the destruction of a suspected Deeper nursery. The Realm learns that Dark Metal 2 resists the infection and turns its growing intergalactic station into a refuge for alien ecosystems. Sentinel identifies the Corrupter as probably derived from the commander of a lost Russian expedition. In the final operation, a false Dark Metal 2 shipment draws him into an ambush. Dash wounds him, but he escapes under the protection of an unidentified Queen. The Realm survives with sixteen recovered biome vessels, and Dash secretly authorizes an attempt to restore a possible neural copy of the recovered Russian astronaut.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Dash, formerly known as Newton Sawyer and also called the Messenger, leads the Cygnus Realm and pilots the Archetype with Sentinel. Leira is his experienced combat partner, while Jameson, Conover, and Amy are established mech pilots in the Realm's defense. Custodian directs major research and fabrication work, and the Realm remains at war with the Deepers.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

A damaged freighter reaches the unfinished intergalactic station through an unexpected gate and brings evidence that the Deepers have returned to the Sagittarius Arm. Dash leads a Realm fleet into Tangle, where it defeats a Deeper force and contains a second confrontation with a hostile offshoot of Clan Shirna. The Realm concludes that the enemy may be searching for concealed Unseen technology and leaves ships to monitor the region. Material shortages at the station then send Dash's group to a distant gray-dwarf system in search of salvage. After defeating the Deeper defenders, Realm Marines seize three dormant, mech-sized constructs with biological cores and changing internal signals. The prisoners are designated bishops, but their purpose remains unknown. A major Deeper assault soon targets the research ships holding them. The Absolute Zero shields the immobilized vessel while the badly outmatched Taffy task force delays the attackers until Dash arrives. The Realm destroys the assault force and keeps the bishops, but the Taffy and its escorts suffer devastating losses. Rescue work begins while Eloise and Conover continue studying the captured constructs.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Custodian deciphers the bishops' synchronized signals and discovers that they can direct gates to arbitrary destinations. Their data predicts that a Deeper gate will open in Rimworld League space, giving the Realm only days to prepare. Sentinel also proposes adapting the bishops' coordination method for linked mech combat, but Dash requires remote tests before allowing pilots to use Deeper-derived code. When the predicted gate opens, a mass torpedo strike and a specialized dreadnought lead a large invasion. Allied forces resist the assault, but the Deepers cripple Jameson's Polaris and capture her. Benzel secures the gate while Dash, Leira, Amy, and Conover pursue the kidnappers into a white-dwarf system. Because Dash's judgment is affected by the capture, he places Conover in command of the rescue. Sentinel confirms that Jameson is alive inside a Deeper construct. Conover and Amy suppress its defenses as Dash and Leira force their way inside and defeat two battle princes. The structure begins breaking apart, but Dash leaves the Archetype in vac armor, frees Jameson, and carries her back to the mech. The team escapes with Jameson alive but badly injured and in need of immediate care.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

Jameson begins a difficult recovery from torture and reports that her interrogator was a speaking figure combining human and Deeper traits. Its translated designation suggests an explorer, but its identity and purpose are unknown. Meanwhile, remotely piloted test mechs use captured coordination code without detectable hostile effects and achieve a substantial improvement in combined fire. A later combat trial confirms that the system can coordinate missiles and redirect attacks efficiently. During a momentary interruption in Dash's meld, however, he experiences what seems to be an ancient alien memory. It shows a different Milky Way, a vanished spiral arm, and a black spire, while referring to a signal and a second dream. Custodian determines that this material was hidden inside the operational code rather than generated by its normal function. The Deepers may have adapted the code instead of creating it. After the AIs isolate the concealed transmission and find no further payload, Dash approves the coordination system for broader mech use. The message's origin and meaning remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Kai and the Order cannot identify the signal or Second Dreaming, leaving the ancient memory unexplained. At the expanding station, Custodian assigns Jameson a new Polaris AI modeled on Dash's psychological profile. Named Newton Sawyer, it helps her settle into recovery while remaining distinguishable from Dash over communications. The Realm then revisits the white-dwarf system connected to earlier mysteries and attempts to contact the Deepers in their own machine code. Jameson distrusts the idea but accepts that peace should be tested before another battle. The Deepers answer with a cryptic reference to an unidentified corrupted figure and immediately attack. Dash's visible force stages a retreat while Conover and Kristen conceal two flanking groups. The resulting ambush destroys the enemy command ship and routs the fleet. Jameson follows her withdrawal order and later accepts that Dash had authorized her AI to hold her weapons if her anger threatened the mission. She then fires the opening shot in the destruction of the suspected Deeper incubator. Two fleeing enemy constructs reveal a hidden black gate, which Sentinel begins redirecting toward the Realm's station.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

A Realm missile and two salvage tugs are overtaken by a mixed organic-machine infection. Concentrated Dark Lance fire can destroy infected material, but both tug crews die when their vessels self-destruct. An entity calling itself the Corrupter speaks through one tug before the blast. Analysis shows that the agent can pass through ordinary matter and disrupt systems built with conventional dark metal. Dark Metal 2 destroys it, giving the Realm's upgraded major mechs protection, but many ships and allied technologies remain exposed. Three enemy constructs race toward the Enteal homeworld, apparently carrying the agent. Dash, Amy, and Conover destroy them completely before contamination can reach the planet, though Dash ruins the Archetype's blur drive during the interception. As repairs proceed, the inner circle broadens the purpose of the intergalactic station. It will become a permanent, self-sustaining home rather than only a military base. Dash adds a preservation mission: locating alien vessels that contain enclosed ecosystems and moving those biomes beyond the galaxy. The Realm approves the plan and sends multiple expeditions to recover them.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Dash and Leira locate an intact biome vessel containing breathable air and native wildlife. Two concealed Deeper constructs attack from a nearby wreck, but the pilots destroy them before the infection agent can be delivered to the living ecosystem. Recovery teams ultimately bring sixteen intact biome vessels to the Realm hub, together with partial vessels and salvageable wrecks. The station now has three gates protected by identification checks and AI controllers, while Eloise leads the large xenobiological effort needed to integrate the rescued environments. At Backwater, Deepers attack a Dark Metal 2 convoy led by Wei Ping. Sentinel exploits the enemy's tendency to concentrate on apparently damaged targets, allowing the Realm to eliminate the attacking battle princes. Her wider review finds that recent Deeper operations follow historical Russian military patterns associated with the commander of a lost early-Earth expedition. Because the change coincides with the Corrupter's arrival, Sentinel concludes that the Corrupter is probably that commander after transformation or assimilation by the Deepers. Dash accepts the assessment. The enemy remains active, but the Realm has secured its refuge and gained a clearer understanding of who may be directing the war.

How does it end? (ending)

The Cygnus Realm finishes the numbered story with a stronger intergalactic hub, three guarded gates, and sixteen intact biome vessels awaiting integration. Its major defenders survive, Jameson remains paired with the Newton Sawyer AI, and Eloise leads the biological work. Sentinel concludes that the Corrupter is probably the assimilated commander of the lost Russian expedition, giving the enemy's recent tactics a human origin. Afterward, the Realm uses a supposed Dark Metal 2 shipment to lure him into battle. Conover commands the bait force and releases concealed reinforcements through a gate deployed by the restored Taffy. Dash emerges from the empty cargo hold, wounds the Corrupter, and breaks the belief that he is untouchable. The Corrupter nevertheless escapes and invokes an unidentified Queen, leaving both enemies as open threats. Ordinary allied systems remain vulnerable to infection despite the protection offered by Dark Metal 2. Custodian also finds a neural mesh in the recovered Russian astronaut, and Dash approves a secret attempt to place its possible mind-copy in a grown body.
