By Stephen King

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Roland Deschain (Protagonist)

Also known as The Gunslinger

Appears from the start

The last gunslinger of Gilead and leader of the ka-tet traveling toward the Dark Tower. His companions have come to trust his skill and purpose, but they know that he has withheld much of the past that formed him and of the sacrifices his quest may demand.

Eddie Dean (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A former New York heroin addict who has become one of Roland's gunslingers. Eddie faces Blaine's riddle contest with the rest of the ka-tet and begins looking for a weakness in the machine's pride and rigid intelligence.

Susannah Dean (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A gunslinger of Roland's ka-tet, formed when the divided Odetta Holmes and Detta Walker became one integrated woman. Susannah is perceptive, disciplined, and protective of the fellowship as Blaine carries them toward a threatened derailment.

Jake Chambers (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A boy from New York who has twice entered Roland's life and is now an accepted member of the gunslinger's ka-tet. Having survived captivity in Lud, he travels with his devoted billy-bumbler Oy and takes part in the desperate contest aboard Blaine.

Oy (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Jake's intelligent billy-bumbler companion. Oy can imitate short words, track scents, and understand more of the group's intentions than an ordinary animal, and his loyalty makes him a full member of their fellowship.

Blaine the Mono (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The unstable artificial intelligence controlling the monorail carrying Roland's ka-tet through the Waste Lands. Blaine intends to destroy the train and everyone aboard unless the travelers can ask him a riddle he cannot answer.

Cuthbert Allgood (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

Roland's closest childhood friend and a fellow gunslinger in training. Quick-witted, irreverent, and exceptionally skilled with a slingshot, Cuthbert accompanies the fourteen-year-old Roland on an assignment to the distant barony of Mejis.

Alain Johns (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The third young gunslinger sent to Mejis with Roland and Cuthbert. Alain is steady, thoughtful, and gifted with an intuitive sensitivity that helps him perceive dangers and emotional currents the others may miss.

Susan Delgado (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

A sixteen-year-old from Mejis who is living with her aunt after her father's death. To preserve their land and position, her family has promised her as a child-bearing companion to the barony's elderly mayor. Independent and an accomplished rider, she feels trapped by an arrangement she agreed to under pressure.

Cordelia Delgado (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

Susan Delgado's aunt and guardian. Anxious about money and status, she has negotiated Susan's arrangement with Mayor Thorin and insists that Susan fulfill it, treating resistance as ingratitude and a threat to their household.

Rhea Dubativo (Antagonist)

Also known as Rhea of the Coos

First appears in chapter 5

An isolated, malicious witch whom Susan must visit as part of the agreement made for her. Rhea possesses a pink glass sphere with powers of observation and fascination, and she uses both magic and humiliation to tighten her influence over Susan's future.

Eldred Jonas (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

The aging leader of the Big Coffin Hunters, armed men employed by the authorities in Hambry. Once trained as a gunslinger but expelled from that path, Jonas quickly recognizes that Roland and his friends are more capable and less harmless than their cover story suggests.

Clay Reynolds (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

A calculating member of the Big Coffin Hunters and Eldred Jonas's most controlled lieutenant. Reynolds helps watch the young visitors and enforce the hidden interests behind Hambry's local government.

Roy Depape (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

The volatile third member of the Big Coffin Hunters. Depape's reckless confrontation with Cuthbert exposes the hostility between Jonas's men and the supposed young livestock counters soon after Roland's group arrives.

Sheemie Ruiz (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A good-natured stable worker at the Travelers' Rest who is often mocked and exploited by Hambry's more powerful residents. He responds readily to kindness, especially Susan's, and becomes a dependable friend despite the danger around him.

Randall Flagg (Antagonist)

Also known as Walter, Marten Broadcloak

First appears in chapter 25

Roland's long-standing adversary, encountered behind the spectacle of an emerald palace. He has moved through Roland's history under several identities and continues to serve powers opposed to the gunslinger's path to the Tower.
