Dark World

By B. V. Larson

The ninth entry in Undying Mercenaries opens amid a political reshuffle at Earth's military command: newly promoted Praetor Drusus installs Galina Turov as commander of Legion Varus, a demotion in all but title that Turov treats as a hostile plot, and the power struggle briefly lands McGill, Turov, and officer Winslade under arrest. Handed a mysterious, long-sought book recovered from a bombing, McGill brings it to a former lover at Central for her opinion, only for an armed intruder to kill her and attack him before he can learn what the book means. Restored to duty, McGill returns to Legion Varus as it is quietly ordered to seize an abandoned alien industrial facility near the frontier, a mission complicated by newly integrated alien troops whose customs clash with human procedure. The legion's announced destination turns out to be a deliberate decoy.
