David Copperfield recounts a life shaped by early cruelty, loyal friends, mistaken admiration, and gradual self-knowledge. After his widowed mother marries the harsh Edward Murdstone, David is sent to a brutal school and then to child labor in London. He escapes to his aunt Betsey Trotwood, receives an education, and begins a career. He idolizes the charming Steerforth, loves and marries the childlike Dora, and overlooks the quiet devotion of Agnes Wickfield. Steerforth's betrayal of Emily devastates the Peggotty family, while Uriah Heep gains control over Mr Wickfield through manipulation and fraud. The Micawbers help expose Heep, but David then loses Dora, Ham, and Steerforth. After travel and reflection, he recognizes Agnes as his true partner. They marry, Mr Peggotty and Emily make a new life in Australia, and David becomes a successful author with a secure family of his own.

David Copperfield is born after his father's death and grows up with his young mother Clara and their devoted servant Peggotty. During a happy visit to Peggotty's relatives at Yarmouth, he befriends Emily and Ham and admires the generous fisherman Mr Peggotty. Returning home, David discovers that his mother has married Edward Murdstone. Murdstone and his equally severe sister impose rigid control over the household. When David struggles with lessons under their intimidation, Murdstone beats him; David bites his hand in panic and is locked away. The marriage turns David's once loving home into a place governed by fear.

Murdstone sends David to Salem House, a harsh school run by Mr Creakle. There David becomes devoted to the charismatic James Steerforth and befriends the good-natured Traddles. His schooling ends after his mother and infant half-brother die, leaving Murdstone free to dispose of him. David is sent to work long days in a London warehouse and lodges with the eloquent, perpetually indebted Micawber family. When the Micawbers leave London, David decides he cannot endure his abandonment. He walks to Dover in search of his great-aunt Betsey Trotwood, losing his few possessions along the way but finally reaching her home.

Betsey protects David from the Murdstones, gives him a new start, and sends him to Doctor Strong's school in Canterbury. He lodges with lawyer Mr Wickfield and grows close to Wickfield's sensible daughter Agnes, while distrusting the clerk Uriah Heep's exaggerated humility. After finishing school, David visits Steerforth and proudly brings him to Yarmouth. Steerforth fascinates the Peggotty household and takes a troubling interest in Emily, now promised to Ham. David then enters legal training in London, renews his friendship with Traddles, and meets Dora Spenlow, the daughter of his employer. He falls in love with her immediately.

David secretly courts Dora while Uriah Heep forces his way into partnership with Mr Wickfield and gains increasing power over him. At Yarmouth, Emily disappears with Steerforth before her marriage to Ham, breaking the Peggotty family's hopes. Mr Peggotty sets out to find her, and David must accept that the friend he admired has acted selfishly and dishonorably. Betsey then reveals that her finances have collapsed, so David works relentlessly as a secretary, reporter, and writer. Despite practical concerns about Dora's lack of household experience, he remains devoted to her, and after Mr Spenlow's death they are able to marry.

Married life exposes how unprepared Dora is for responsibility, though David continues to love her and slowly gives up trying to reshape her. Mr Peggotty eventually finds Emily, abandoned and ashamed, and plans to take her to Australia. Meanwhile, Micawber has entered Uriah Heep's employment and gathers proof of his crimes. In a confrontation arranged with David and Traddles, Micawber demonstrates that Heep forged documents, exploited Mr Wickfield's weakness, and stole from Betsey. Heep is forced to surrender the business and property. As these wrongs are being repaired, Dora's health fails, and Agnes supports both her and David through the decline.

Dora dies, leaving David grief-stricken. A violent storm then drives a ship ashore near Yarmouth. Ham dies attempting to rescue a stranded sailor, who proves to be Steerforth; Steerforth also dies in the wreck. Mr Peggotty departs for Australia with Emily, Mrs Gummidge, and the Micawbers, giving several damaged lives a chance to begin again. David travels abroad and, through grief and reflection, recognizes that Agnes has long been the deepest source of love and guidance in his life. On returning to England, he learns that she loves him too. They marry, while news from Australia reports prosperity for the emigrants. David becomes a successful author, and his final retrospect places Agnes, their children, his aunt, and his surviving friends within the stable home his childhood denied him.

Uriah Heep's fraud is exposed, allowing Mr Wickfield and Betsey Trotwood to recover much of what he took from them. Dora dies after a long decline, and David later loses both Ham and Steerforth when a violent storm wrecks Steerforth's ship off Yarmouth. Mr Peggotty takes Emily abroad to begin again, accompanied by the Micawbers, whose fortunes improve in Australia. David travels for several years and gradually understands that Agnes has always been the person he trusts and loves most. He returns, declares his love, and marries her. The closing retrospect finds David established as a writer and surrounded by family and enduring friends, with Agnes beside him as the moral center of the home he once lacked.
