A telepathic waitress at Merlotte's bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana. She has accepted that she is part fairy, descended from the prince Niall Brigant, and she is spared by the new Nevada regime because her mind-reading makes her useful. She is bonded to the vampire Eric Northman by exchanged blood, estranged from Bill Compton since learning he was ordered to seduce her, and quietly building a relationship with Hunter, the small telepathic son of her dead cousin.

The owner of Merlotte's, a shapeshifter and Sookie's employer of many years. Cautious by temperament, he has kept what he is hidden from the town for his whole adult life, and the decision facing every two-natured person in the world falls hardest on someone whose livelihood depends on Bon Temps liking him.

The Viking vampire who owns Fangtasia and holds Shreveport and its territory as sheriff, now serving Felipe de Castro of Nevada with a regent set over him. He and Sookie share a blood bond and an unresolved attachment, and he is increasingly concerned that the new king's people will decide to claim Sookie outright.

Sookie's vampire neighbor and former lover, now permanently out of favor after she learned he was sent to Bon Temps under the old queen's orders to attach himself to her. He keeps to his house across the cemetery, works on his vampire database, and has never stopped watching out for her whether she wants it or not.

Sookie's brother, a werepanther by infection rather than birth, married to Crystal Norris of Hotshot. The marriage is unhappy and unfaithful on both sides and is common knowledge in two communities, which does nothing for his standing with the panthers or with his sister.

A New Orleans witch lodging in Sookie's upstairs rooms since the hurricane, capable, loud, and not always careful. She is the closest thing Sookie has to a female friend in the house and provides most of its magical defenses.

Jason's wife, a werepanther born in the inbred, insular community at Hotshot. She is pregnant, restless, and openly unfaithful, and her behavior has strained relations between Jason and the panthers who consider her theirs.

A werepanther from Hotshot and one of Jason's regular drinking companions, a quiet man who keeps his distance from the rest of the panther community and seems more comfortable in Jason's company than in his own family's.

Sookie's fairy godmother, a full-blooded fairy of Niall's line who has appeared throughout Sookie's life to pull her out of danger. She is pregnant, which for a fairy is rare and precious, and she is more anxious than usual about what her own people are doing.

Sookie's great-grandfather, prince of the fairies, ancient and courtly. He visits her when it suits him, deflects her questions about fairy politics, and is plainly managing a conflict among his own kind that he does not want to describe to her.

A Shreveport werewolf and locksmith, blunt and competent, who has done security work for Sookie's household before. He is trusted enough by both wolves and vampires to be hired as a bodyguard when Sookie's house needs guarding.

A fairy who looks almost exactly like Jason Stackhouse and turns out to be a relative, Niall's son and therefore Sookie's great-uncle. His behavior is erratic and his loyalties are impossible to read, and Niall speaks of him with a mixture of grief and warning.

A fairy noble who leads the faction opposing Niall Brigant. He wants the fae to sever every remaining tie with the human world, and he regards Niall's human-blooded descendants as the tie most worth cutting.

A fairy in Breandan's service, beautiful and entirely without pity, who works alongside Lochlan. The pair are known among their own people for taking a craftsman's interest in the suffering of others.

A fairy in Breandan's service and Neave's inseparable partner, sharing her tastes and her reputation. Where she is theatrical he is methodical, and neither is deterred by anything a captive says.

A vampire made by the same maker as Bill Compton, and therefore his sister in blood, living well away from Louisiana. Their shared history is long and painful, and she has kept her distance from him for years.
