A telepathic waitress in Bon Temps, recovering slowly from the torture she survived at the hands of two fairies. She is physically scarred, sleeping badly, and flinching at things that never bothered her before. She is married to Eric Northman by vampire custom, cut off from Faery since her great-grandfather closed it, and sharing her house with fairy relatives she is still learning to live with.

The Viking vampire sheriff of Area Five, owner of Fangtasia, and Sookie's husband by vampire law. He is under constant pressure from Victor Madden, the regent Nevada placed over him, and he is more careful with Sookie than he has ever been while telling her less than she wants to know about his own past.

Eric's child and second in command at Fangtasia, blunt, sardonic and completely loyal to her maker. She treats Sookie with a wary respect that has grown into something close to friendship.

Sookie's vampire neighbor, still weak and badly damaged by the fairy blood that poisoned him when he saved her. His recovery has stalled, he refuses to explain why, and Sookie's anger at his original deception has softened into worry.

The shapeshifter who owns Merlotte's, now publicly known as two-natured along with the rest of his kind. Business at the bar has suffered since the revelation, and he is dating Jannalynn Hopper of the Shreveport werewolf pack.

Sookie's brother, widowed by Crystal's murder and steadier than he has been in years. He has started seeing Michele Schubert, a woman with no patience for nonsense, and is trying to be a better neighbor to his sister than he used to be.

Claudine's brother, a beautiful and vain part-fairy stranded on the human side when Faery closed. Cut off from his own world and grieving his sister, he attaches himself to Sookie as the only close kin he has left and moves into her house.

Sookie's great-uncle, a fairy who could pass for Jason's twin, likewise stranded outside Faery. Something has been done to his mind that leaves him unreliable and easily led, and he drifts in and out of Sookie's house doing odd jobs while nobody can quite decide whether to trust him.

The Roman vampire who made Eric more than a thousand years ago and who still holds the authority of a maker over him. Courteous, ancient and utterly certain of his rights, he arrives in Louisiana unannounced and expects Eric to accommodate him and his companion.

Appius's other surviving child, a vampire in the body of a boy of about thirteen, turned out of the wreckage of the Russian imperial family. He is charming in short bursts, physically strong beyond his size, and visibly unwell in his mind, and the household around him grows tense whenever he is quiet.

Packmaster of the Long Tooth werewolves in Shreveport, an old friend of Sookie's who keeps finding reasons to visit her land. He wants her formally tied to his pack and is not always honest about how he goes about it.

The Long Tooth pack's enforcer, a small, sharply dressed young werewolf with an appetite for violence that her size disguises. She is dating Sam, which everyone regards as an unlikely pairing, and she carries out Alcide's discipline without hesitation.

Alcide's second in command, a capable and well-liked werewolf brought in from outside the parish. He has a keen nose and is the one who reports that something is buried in the woods on Sookie's property.

Sookie's cousin Hadley's small son, living in Red Ditch with his father Remy. He is telepathic like Sookie, about to start school, and has no idea yet that the thoughts he hears are not something other children can hear too.

A fairy stranded on the human side, who was Claudine's lover and the father of the child she was carrying when she died. He holds Sookie responsible for that death and has come looking for a reckoning.
