A telepathic waitress in Bon Temps, married to Eric Northman by vampire custom and quietly carrying a cluviel dor, a fairy token good for a single wish, which she has told almost no one about. Her marriage is failing under the weight of a contract she was never meant to see, promising Eric to another vampire monarch, and her patience with the whole supernatural world is close to gone.

The Viking vampire sheriff of Area Five, holding Louisiana territory with the king's regent conveniently dead and the king himself paying close attention. He is under an obligation his dead maker made for him and has not found a way to talk to Sookie about it, which is doing more damage than the obligation itself.

Eric's child and second, sharper-tongued than ever since losing her lover Miriam. She is impatient with her maker's paralysis over the Oklahoma contract and blunt with Sookie about what it will cost both of them.

The shapeshifter who owns Merlotte's and Sookie's employer and oldest friend in town. He has taken her on as a business partner in the bar, and his relationship with the werewolf enforcer Jannalynn Hopper is one of the few things he and Sookie do not discuss honestly.

Sookie's vampire neighbor, fully recovered and serving Eric loyally. He has stopped asking Sookie for anything and become simply dependable, which she finds harder to argue with than his old persistence.

Sookie's part-fairy cousin, who runs the club Hooligans in Monroe as a haven for the fae stranded in this world. He has been away a great deal, is evasive about where, and has developed a marked interest in what Sookie keeps in her house.

Sookie's great-uncle, restored to himself since the curse on him was broken and living in her attic. He is warm, capable and openly homesick for a world whose doors were shut behind him.

The vampire king of Nevada, Louisiana and Arkansas, visiting Shreveport with his retinue. He is charming, meticulous, and openly curious about what became of the regent he left in charge of the state.

A young woman with were and fairy blood who turns up at a party at Eric's house offering herself as a blood donor, and makes a point of doing it in front of Sookie. She is nervous underneath the performance and appears to be following someone else's instructions.

The Long Tooth pack's enforcer and Sam's girlfriend, small, sharp and violent, who has never accepted Sookie's place in Sam's life or in the pack's affairs.

Eric's day man, a werewolf who values his privacy and does his job precisely. He is drawn into the investigation because Eric needs someone who can move around in daylight and be trusted.

An elf living at Hooligans among Claude's collection of stranded fae, cheerful, hungry and entirely unbothered by human squeamishness. He is friendly to Sookie in a way that does not reassure her.

A wealthy New Orleans developer and the father of Sookie's friend Amelia. He has known since the storm that Sookie's family possessed a fairy object of real power, and he wants it.

Debbie Pelt's younger sister, who has spent years blaming Sookie for Debbie's disappearance and has been jailed and warned off more than once without effect. She is out again and has stopped pretending to want anything but Sookie dead.

Sookie's great-grandfather and prince of the fairies, who shut Faery behind him and has been beyond reach ever since. Matters on the human side have grown serious enough to bring him back.
