In short (whole book)

Zac enters the Mercurial Court under a borrowed identity, survives its corrupted histories, and lives an entire alternate mortal life that strengthens his Dao heart. His other body helps expose Mox's Hope-energy soul harvest, while later journeys reconnect Poised Meadows to Imperial faith and disrupt Sangha plans. At Savona's hunting lodge, Zac, Esmeralda, and a prophetic guild vice leader sabotage an invasion built on overlapping realities. Zac defeats Descartes with Alea and Kaltosa Lu, only for Kaltosa Lu to betray him and escape. Giphos sacrifices himself to free Zac and pass on the Empyrean Chalice's mission. The vice leader becomes Idych, Savona's independent successor, takes the divine core, and ends the island's sacrificial cycle. She gives Esmeralda the lodge, but warns that an immediate attempt on the Second Singularity would end in disaster. With Alea gravely depleted and Kaltosa Lu holding his stolen seal, Zac refuses Asura's alliance and begins preparing for a safer attempt after reaching peak Hegemony.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Zac has advanced through the Imperial Road as a seal bearer while keeping his unusual Void capabilities concealed. His cultivation balances life, death, and conflict, and he continues building the foundations needed for his eventual rise to Monarchy. Esmeralda, Ogras, and Alea remain among his established companions, though the dangers of the courts have repeatedly separated the wider group. Zac also relies on identities and opportunities tied to the fallen Limitless Empire, where Imperial faith, merit, and ancient inheritances can provide extraordinary gains while creating obligations of their own. His route has brought him toward the Mercurial Court, a place associated with illusion, memory, transformation, and paths into the deeper Imperial legacy.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Zac reaches the Mercurial Court's transformation docks under a deceased law keeper's identity, injured but with his Void nature still concealed. Esmeralda recovers enough to advise him, and Zac trades away suspicious payment from an elemental rival while securing resources and attendant agreements. The route inward depends on selecting a Peregrine gondola whose temporal construction resists ordinary examination. At the opening ceremony, Zac finds Janos unexpectedly gathering Imperial faith. Grand Dream opens the transformation gate, and Asura's bloodline produces a hidden reaction in Zac. A paid challenger then contests Zac's seal-bearing destiny, but Esmeralda defeats him in a transforming maze. The employer remains unknown. Asura's worship ceremony reveals possible routes across the Peregrine Ocean, giving Zac and Esmeralda a way to identify a useful gondola. Before they can depart, the docks become a warped city invaded by corrupted alternate beings. Janos creates protective faith halos and offers to locate the proper route if Zac can keep him alive through the attack.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Zac, Janos, and Esmeralda cross a distorted version of the docks where alternate histories are converging. They conclude that Imperial faith anchors reality against the corruption, then return to find seal bearers fighting their doubles. An enkindling sage recognizes Zac beneath his borrowed identity and tries to retain Janos for an investigation, but Zac forces the sage onto another gondola. Asura clears the remaining doubles, and Zac's group departs across the Peregrine Ocean. The crossing traps Zac in successive alternate lives and finally in the powerless, crippled life of his assumed identity. He survives bandits, opens a carving shop, and spends years among a mortal community. Accepting that life lets him deepen a heart-based connection to his Dao while preserving his true self. Elsewhere, Zac's other body prepares to rescue Ogras and another missing ally. An undead envoy confronts him over Arcaz Umbrizi, confirms that her faction understands his divided identity, and agrees to limited cooperation. She links their pursuer, Mox, to false eternity and shifted karmic debt, then offers concealment for a short operation inside the hidden domain.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Zac and the undead envoy enter the Mousetrap, an underground refuge divided among rival factions. They reunite with Ogras and learn that Hope crystals from a lower plane empower the Pathfinders while creating dangerous nightmares. The group uses a faction war to reach the gate behind the crystals. There Zac exposes Naruk as Mox's willing agent and discovers that Hope energy quietly strips soul fragments from its users. Mox's hidden engine tortures those accumulated souls for longevity and providence. Zac damages her anchor but cannot escape her direct attention. Roan establishes an Imperial domain, Margrave Wartorius forces Mox's sanctuary into the open, and the Primo brings true death to her purgatories, freeing the captives and breaking the ritual. In the Peregrine Ocean, Zac chooses to keep the decades he lived as Zachary Atwood instead of sacrificing that reality for an immediate transformation. He steals some of the crossing's power and returns to the quartz pillar, where both bodies are being eroded by foreign supreme forces. By integrating the mortal lifetime, he deepens his understanding of life and death and survives simultaneous Dao breakthroughs, though a bloodline evolution attempt fails.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

After recovering from the Mox confrontation, Zac reunites with Ogras and his undead companion on the Hollow Court's graveyard terraces. He has reached the edge of Hegemony but lacks a compatible method for forming an inner world, and his bloodline's ability to draw cosmic matter is too indiscriminate to replace one. Esmeralda then brings him into a Mercurial Court memory, where an elder called Old Sixth admits him as an outer disciple and grants a sack that can turn sufficiently understood illusions into real objects. When the memory collapses, Zac and Esmeralda escape into the ruined scripture tower. They kill a corrupted imitation of Esmeralda, earn Potentiality, and open a hidden chamber containing a spatial method involving miniature black-hole nuclei. Zac cannot use it directly but keeps it as a model. Esmeralda finally explains the danger behind her repeated deaths: a temporal heritage has trapped her spatial bloodline in a parasitic cycle, using each recovery to feed itself. She believes a spatial cosmic natal treasure within the Court can restore her balance. The pair therefore commit to earning inner-disciple access and reaching that treasure, possibly through its remembered form if the original has moved.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Zac and Esmeralda begin gathering Potentiality and searching Court memories for control over fate. Asura privately confirms that Zac is not Everett Drohm but accepts Grand Dream's assurance that cooperation is possible. She recruits him to expose false seal bearers, gives him a limited corruption detector, and directs him toward the Peregrine Isles. On another route, Zac, Ogras, and his undead companion enter Poised Meadows, where their trial requires awakening native spirits and bringing them toward the Empire. Zac follows a living temple's vision to a weakened natal life treasure and uses the surrounding primal life to awaken a golden spirit. The attempt destabilizes the sealed realm gate. During the crisis, Zac completes the fifth layer of Void Vajra Sublimation and severs the earthly authority chains restricting all three of his Daos. His spirit takes part of the natal treasure's spirituality, and Imperial faith floods through the reopened connection. The event earns major merit and appears to obstruct a Sangha effort to weaken the Empire's hold over the Lower Planes. Zac leaves with stronger vitality, soul cultivation, and independence from external Dao suppression, while Cathaya and Velary continue along separate, increasingly unstable Court routes.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Cathaya dismantles a starving karmic loop and temporarily joins an Earth-born Sangha abbot who creates a new route toward the karma court. In the Peregrine Isles, Zac and Esmeralda steal an immature almond, then trace a corruption-responsive signet to the Explorers Guild. Its hunting-lodge miracle is about to appear, but the Guild's Endless Caves show signs of a replacement network. A prophetic vice leader investigating the same danger captures Esmeralda during a dream episode, then agrees to cooperate with Zac after he explains the invasion. Her visions reveal Savona, a faith-created dream-goddess repeatedly embodied by chosen queens, and suggest the lodge occupies a weak boundary between realities. Meanwhile, Zac's other body, traveling with Ogras and the undead companion through the Crushing Hell, discovers Sangha influence woven into an Imperial formation. They plan to collapse the local memory by releasing the faith and killing intent sealed in its boulders. Zac confronts the selected boulder, invokes the Empire's struggle against the Sangha, and forms a link with the bound Imperial wills. The attempt to collapse the memory and break the Sangha's influence remains unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

Zac transfers most of the Crushing Hell's killing intent to his other body on Savona's island, where combat with corrupted drakes begins refining it into his own path. Zac, Esmeralda, and the guild vice leader navigate a warped forest and uncover an entrenched operation connecting the island to a dry alternate reality. They cross a dream barrier and find infiltrators using corruption, temporal power, and Imperial faith to overwrite Savona's defenses. Esmeralda steals critical components, causing the ritual to explode and separating its two monarchs. Zac fights the newly advanced monarch alone, loses an arm, and destroys both the enemy and his damaged inner world. The dead monarch proves to be a replacement who had killed his local counterpart and prepared the island for a larger dimensional merger. Elsewhere, the guildmaster sabotages the invaders at severe cost to her foundations, takes Savona's relic, and escapes into the island's central mists. The main ritual is ruined and its lead monarch is dead, but another monarch and several active ritual sites remain.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

Zac retrieves the ancient dagger that locates Savona's lodge, survives a corruption-induced hallucination, and follows its hidden road into the sealed inner region. The guildmaster dies after passing on her warning, and the vice leader absorbs power from the corrupted space left behind. On the Far Sea Court route, Carl and Iz Tayn expose a long-term Sangha infiltration. Iz concludes that the Sangha intends to turn the Limitless Empire's destiny into fuel for an eternal cycle of reincarnation. Back on Savona's island, Zac's group decides to take the lodge's divine core rather than fight every remaining monarch. They cross eight illusory rivers filled with otherworldly soldiers. Zac's Void attacks destroy the projections and refine the ancient killing intent, while the vice leader's sleeping power helps form a genuine second Warbringer idol embodying life, decay, and death. Her own ancient inner persona grows more influential, making her future uncertain. After surviving an ambush and the final crossings, the group reaches the lodge. A memory warns that the Hall of Abundance is tied to the kingdom's fortune and that its sapphire smoke brings disaster. More than thirty invaders and two monarchs are already attacking the gate to the lodge's heart.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

Zac strikes the invaders' barrier, and the lodge's retaliation kills their mage and wounds a monarch. Kaltosa Lu emerges from a parasitized body and opposes Descartes, the invading commander, while Zac and Esmeralda recognize the guild vice leader as Idych, likely Savona's intended successor. August, Savona's former guard captain and the power behind the moon, reaches for the divine core. Descartes supports August and tries to seize the destinies of Zac and Kaltosa Lu. Their combined assault cannot overcome his ability to restore himself through illusion until the Empyrean Chalice protects Zac from Descartes' borrowed authority. Alea then uses Inexorable Fate at severe cost, allowing Zac to break Descartes with primordial chaos. Descartes returns in a devil form, and Kaltosa Lu betrays Zac, sealing him while poisoned arrays finish Descartes. Giphos emerges from the Chalice, sacrifices his remaining existence to heal Zac, removes the seals, and passes on the Chalice's mission. Zac closes August's dimensional breach. When he wakes, Idych has absorbed the core. She accepts Savona's memories but remains herself, ending the repeated sacrificial cycle rather than becoming the former goddess again.

Story so far - through chapter 73 (this book)

Idych examines possible futures and warns that Zac and Esmeralda would lose control if they attempted the Second Singularity immediately, forcing Esmeralda to contain it with disastrous consequences. She upgrades their stolen Peregrine almond, and Zac consumes it to perfect his cosmic core and gain insight for his peak D-grade blueprint. Idych gives Esmeralda the hunting lodge so its enduring memory nucleus can help contain the temporal treasure she still needs. She then leaves to protect the Mercurial Court's hidden sacrifice. Enforcement Hall forces seal Savona's Island in amber and prepare a purge of infiltrators. Zac's status as the Empyrean Chalice's Holy Son is publicly confirmed, but its mission remains undefined, and Alea is still deeply asleep after damaging her spirit to stop Descartes. Kaltosa Lu escapes with Zac's fate-siphoning seal and begins seeking other seal bearers. Asura reveals that Zac's realm-singer seal is a diverted karmic link to Ultum and offers to restore it if he joins her flame-seeking cycle and explains his bloodline. Zac refuses to expose the secret. He and Esmeralda leave the island and begin a roughly three-month push toward peak Hegemony before attempting the Second Singularity.

How does it end? (ending)

Idych accepts Savona's memories and divine core while remaining an independent successor, ending the island's sacrificial cycle. She gives the contracted hunting lodge to Esmeralda as a future containment tool, then leaves to guard the Mercurial Court's hidden sacrifice. Descartes is dead, August's intrusion has been closed, and Savona's Island is sealed in amber for a purge. Giphos gives up his remaining existence and the Empyrean Chalice's flame to free and heal Zac, leaving him as the Chalice's publicly verified Holy Son with an undefined mission. Alea survives her costly use of fate power but remains deeply asleep with serious spiritual damage. Kaltosa Lu escapes with Zac's fate-siphoning seal and turns toward other seal bearers. Zac's cosmic core has reached exceptional perfection, yet Idych foresees disaster if he and Esmeralda attempt the Second Singularity too soon. Zac refuses Asura's proposed place in her flame-seeking cycle rather than expose his bloodline secret. He and Esmeralda leave the sealed island and begin an estimated three-month push toward peak Hegemony before trying again. Sangha interference, Esmeralda's temporal loop, the Chalice mission, and the larger Imperial struggle remain unresolved.
