In short (whole book)
Zac enters the Eastern Trigram treasure hunt, allies with Thea Marshall, survives attacks by Salvation and Inevitability, and claims a dangerous sect inheritance that exposes his Draugr nature and leaves him carrying an Oblivion splinter. He joins Beruv Ylvas and Billy to kill Nenothep Medhin, wins the hunt overall, and returns wealthy to Port Atwood. After uncovering clues about his altered body, Zac becomes Ariel's terminal disciple and receives a life-death cultivation path. Port Atwood then builds a broad alliance against the undead and hostile incursions. Zac's covert force destroys Thanzo's slaveholding regime, annexes Verdant Fields, and reaches an accord with Verana Tir'Emarel's Tal-Eladar. Zac and Ogras finally kill Salvation, but his distributed puppets explode and kill more than a million people while Ogras suffers a soul wound. Zac conceals Salvation's origin funnel as enemy factions prepare for a sealed mystic realm, and Emily announces that the Underworld has been found.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Earth was integrated into the System and transformed into a much larger world filled with incursions, monsters, and competing factions. Zac survived the opening disaster, grew into an exceptional mortal warrior, and established Port Atwood as his base. He closed incursions, gathered human and demon allies, and became one of Earth's foremost powers while keeping Kenzie, his sister, at the center of his concerns. Ogras became both an ally and a commander in the settlement, while Alea, Calrin, Joanna, Ilvere, Janos, and other specialists helped turn Port Atwood into an organized force. The Marshall clan and the New World Government emerged as major human powers with different interests. Questions remained about Zac's missing mother, Earth's displaced people, and Zac's unusual constitution. As the struggle for Earth widened, the Limited Treasure Hunt offered access to rare rewards and drew dangerous contenders from Earth and other integrated worlds.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Zac enters the Eastern Trigram treasure hunt under concealment and learns that its participants include contenders from other integrated worlds. He raids ancient structures, overcomes lethal arrays, kills attackers, and climbs both the Hunter and Gatherer ladders. At an alchemical estate he finds Thea Marshall gravely wounded by a Medhin royal and destroys the royal's array-backed force. Thea accepts Zac's aid and accompanies him into the estate despite her injuries. Together they pass poison and gravity defenses and discover maintained gardens filled with valuable spiritual plants. Zac secures the hidden fields and rises to first place on the Gatherer ladder. The pair continue toward the central mountains while watching the rankings for Nenothep Medhin, Beruv Ylvas, and the dangerous Zhix Dominators. When night falls, the hunt disables escape tokens and orders every participant to survive an unknown darkness.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
The nightly event drives Zac and Thea into a new conflict. They encounter Gabriel, who calls himself Salvation and converts soulless captives into silver puppets for the Great Redeemer. Zac and Thea fight through his expendable army, but a protective imprint allows Salvation to escape after losing a hand and much of his treasure. Away from the hunt, Port Atwood and the Marshall clan formalize an alliance while Zac uses Zhix diplomatic rites to approach traditional hives threatened by the Dominators. Ogras and Calrin use Port Atwood's origin array to identify and eliminate active shapeshifter infiltrators. Back in the hunt, the Dominator Inevitability catches Zac and Thea with chain attacks that neither can defeat nor outrun. Zac is knocked into a deep rift and loses his exit token. He ends stranded beneath the trial grounds at an ancient prison that may be connected to the madness-inducing darkness, while Thea's fate is unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Trapped below the hunt, Zac explores ruins of the Eastern Trigram Sect and enters an inheritance route built around repeated combat trials. He fights spectral enemies and learns fragments of the sect's fall while searching for a path back to the surface. The underground route offers powerful rewards but steadily increases the danger. Zac clears a rat den whose corrosive creatures ruin his clothing, and his axe begins a major evolution that temporarily limits his ability to advance. He also uncovers evidence that outside factions have plans connected to the trial grounds and to a master called the Redeemer. After resuming his progress, Zac reaches a chamber holding the Core of Darkness. His attempt to claim it ends with him unconscious among hostile spectral guardians, leaving the inheritance and his survival unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
Zac survives the inheritance depths and leaves with extensive knowledge of arrays and inscriptions. The greatest prize is also the most dangerous: a splinter connected to Oblivion enters him, and its corruption is only temporarily contained. The trials reveal that his second race is Draugr and carries an unexplained Royal Bloodline, deepening the mystery of his body. Zac returns to the hunt's surface and retains first place on the Gatherer ladder because of the sealed splinter. He learns that Vasidas Medhin, Nenothep's ambitious crown prince, has captured Thea to lure him into the central conflict. While moving through the inner region, Zac discovers evidence of a major underground incursion and makes contact with Beruv Ylvas. The resistance champion approaches him with shared reasons to oppose the Medhin Empire.
Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)
Zac and Beruv Ylvas prepare an assault on Nenothep Medhin's central position, with Thea's captivity forcing them to act quickly. Zac finds Billy, an immensely strong Earth contender with practical array knowledge, and Billy joins because Thea is his friend. The three reach Ylvas's hidden resistance base and set out with a small force to break the Medhin war array. Their attack tears through its supporting formations and defenders. Zac and Ylvas ultimately kill Nenothep, ending the emperor's control and breaking the central resistance war, but both pay heavily for the victory. Ylvas loses a leg and suffers life-force damage, while Zac is left severely wounded. Vasidas honors his promise to free Thea only after using the battle to remove his father, then tries to assassinate Zac and Ylvas. Zac's axe spirit exposes and wounds him, but the crown prince escapes.
Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)
The Limited Treasure Hunt concludes with Zac first in the aggregate ranking. He returns to Port Atwood at level 73 with major wealth, ancient resources, and the Eastern Trigram inheritance. Thea and Billy also survive the event, while the Dominators and Vasidas remain unresolved dangers. Port Atwood's council studies the Great Redeemer's connection to the Medhin program and suspects that Earth's temporary origin Dao may be his true objective. They consider affiliation with a powerful outside sect, possibly through the Tower of Eternity, as a long-term deterrent. Zac distributes rewards, expands the settlement's plans, and prioritizes access to the Underworld alongside immediate military threats. He answers an emergency at an Ishiate settlement and joins an assault on a rockman incursion. In recovered undead materials, Zac finds a skill suitable for his hidden Draugr form and Maul's records of lethal experiments with Draugr essence, linking his altered race to a deliberate project without explaining why he survived.
Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)
Back at Port Atwood, Zac studies Maul's work while Kenzie helps manage the hunt's resources and gains controlled access to his cultivation cave. Emily returns as a Runic Shaman, and a newly germinated lotus adds another valuable asset to the settlement. Zac then enters the Lord of Cycles inheritance. The trial tests his combat ability and presents a readable pattern tied to life and death, though the construct bearing it is destroyed. After reaching level 74 and passing the first stage, Zac meets the inheritance's true master. The inheritance spirit identifies himself as Ariel and explains that the repository spirit is not actually Brazla, despite its confused belief. Ariel sees possible value in Zac's apparent lack of normal Dao affinity and offers to make him a disciple, but the offer begins as a difficult negotiation rather than a simple reward.
Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)
Ariel forces Zac into a dream trial that could damage his soul. Zac must obtain two guarded treasures from rival sects, using disguise, infiltration, and the conflict between them to complete the test. He succeeds and becomes Ariel's terminal disciple. Ariel gives him a demanding cultivation plan centered on grouping and eventually fusing life and death Dao, along with a transformation skill and a ten-year delay before the next inheritance trial. Zac also accepts an obligation to resurrect Ariel if he someday reaches sufficient power. After leaving the inheritance, Zac returns to political and military work. Alea resumes limited duties despite the dangerous consequences of her incomplete transformation. A Port Atwood delegation reaches Westfort under Marshall observation, where negotiations address trade, the missing Underworld, and disagreements over the status of demon defectors. Emily's missing siblings remain part of the broader mystery surrounding displaced groups.
Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)
The allied powers prepare for millions of advancing undead while evidence suggests that the Zhix Dominators and a faction within the New World Government may be cooperating. Thomas Fischer has centralized the government into an effective autocracy, and the Marshall leadership fears a future human conflict. Traditional Zhix hives commit to fighting the Dominators, with Nonet securing Hive Dahiti's support. Zac and Thea agree that Salvation must be eliminated, but first Zac needs to close more incursions and reach level 75. The alliance divides its effort between a public war against the undead and Zac's secret campaign against isolated invasion forces. Alea, Janos, Ilvere, Joanna, and Thea receive major responsibilities in the wider war. Zac's covert strike force begins with the Ez'Mahal territory, where Thanzo oversees a slaveholding regime. The assault reaches the enemy leadership center, and the discovery of hundreds of mutilated corpses in Thanzo's possessions leads Zac to reject surrender. Thanzo and his regime are destroyed, their escape route is cut off, and the surviving enslaved population begins to be freed.
Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)
Port Atwood assumes responsibility for the liberated Ez'Mahal territory, renames it Verdant Fields, and plans to preserve its spiritual farmland as an agricultural center. The expansion exposes a shortage of administrators and defenders. Zac next targets the Tal-Eladar incursion after its raids and aggressive growth, while refusing to treat the people as enemies solely because of their ancient conflict with Demonkin. He defeats a raiding force and then faces Verana Tir'Emarel in a duel with her transformed beasts. During the fighting, Zac realizes that the contained Oblivion splinter may be feeding corruption into his mind and worsening his bloodlust. He defeats Verana but replaces extermination with a hundred-year arrangement. Six hundred Tal-Eladar, including three hundred warriors, remain within Port Atwood's sphere, and Verana joins the strike force. The next incursion closes at a cost, including the death of a Valkyrie. Ogras reveals that his inheritance forcibly fused a shadow entity to him, strengthening him but making his abilities unreliable around fire. Zac reaches level 75 and the peak of F-grade.
Story so far - through chapter 103 (this book)
At level 75, Zac receives new class quests. One requires him to fell a five-hundred-meter tree in a single strike, and he chooses to seek a suitable redwood inside Salvation's Cradle of God rather than attack a sacred Ishiate tree. A separate discovery confirms that a distant Marshall relative sold intelligence to incursion forces; the clan executes the collaborator under wartime law. Zac delays operations long enough to improve his Dao of Sharpness, then enters Salvation's depopulated territory with Ogras under layered concealment. An immense puppet population occupies Salvation’s territory, apparently coordinated by a large array. Their infiltration is exposed as the puppet army arrives. Zac's new skill destroys tens of thousands, but Salvation's defenses and massed attacks push both infiltrators to their limits. Zac ends badly injured and nearly depleted, while Ogras uses his altered shadows to keep the battle from collapsing.
Story so far - through chapter 105 (this book)
Zac uses his Draugr transformation to survive Salvation's final assault, and Ogras helps turn the opening into a killing blow. Salvation dies in the Cradle of God, but the victory triggers a separate catastrophe: hidden puppets detonate throughout his territory and kill more than a million people, including a devastating number in New Washington. Ogras suffers a serious soul wound, and Zac is left injured and burdened by the civilian deaths. Zac conceals Salvation's corpse and the control inscription that had stored origin Dao. He also retains the origin funnel carried by Salvation, an item that enemy forces may be able to trace. A disciple of Void and two allied leaders learn of the death and plan to enter the sealed mystic realm after its entrances close, seeking an item within and possibly the funnel. Thomas Fischer orders an attack on an entrance to the Church of Everlasting Dao after the mass-casualty strike. Port Atwood and its allies remain committed to the undead war, Verdant Fields, and their new Tal-Eladar arrangement. The book closes when Emily reports that the Underworld has been found, creating Zac's next immediate destination.
How does it end? (ending)
Zac and Ogras kill Salvation in the Cradle of God, but Ogras suffers a severe soul injury and Salvation's hidden puppets detonate across his territory. More than a million people die, with New Washington suffering a catastrophic loss. Zac conceals Salvation's body and the control inscription that stored origin Dao, leaving him in possession of an origin funnel that hostile forces may be able to track. Port Atwood retains Verdant Fields, its Tal-Eladar contingent, and its alliances while allied armies continue containing the undead hordes. The Great Redeemer, the Dominators, and Void's faction remain active threats, and enemies plan to enter the sealed mystic realm. Zac is injured but has reached the peak of F-grade and carries Ariel's demanding life-death cultivation plan, the Draugr mystery, and the dangerous Oblivion splinter. Ogras must recover from his soul wound and adapt to the shadow entity fused to him. Vasidas Medhin remains at large, Emily's siblings and Zac's mother remain missing, and Emily's report that the Underworld has been found sets the immediate next objective.
