In short (whole book)
Zac expands Port Atwood's reach into the Underworld, destroys the Union's slave-trading regime, closes multiple incursions, and survives a hidden technocrat operation connected to his missing mother, Leandra. He rescues Port Atwood's battered army, but Alea suffers a shattered soul. A dangerous Origin Dao experiment gives Zac an Axe Fragment at the cost of deaths, comas, and possible links to the Great Redeemer. Zac and Ogras enter the Tower of Eternity seeking advancement and a cure. The Oblivion splinter drives Zac into a lethal rampage, yet he emerges with the Prajna cherry for Alea and a treasure that may improve his core. On Earth, the Undead Empire activates its planetary conversion array, and Kenzie can only slow it. The book ends with Galau leaving the Tower group to become a merchant while Zac and Ogras begin an unfinished trial atop a colossal ancestral beast.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Earth was integrated into the multiverse's System, forcing humanity into a struggle against incursions, monsters, and rival powers. Zac became a leading cultivator despite lacking an innate class at integration. He built Port Atwood into a growing settlement, gained both living and undead combat forms, and closed several incursions while gathering allies including Ogras, Kenzie, Alea, Ilvere, and the Valkyries. His victories also created wider dangers. Salvation served the distant Great Redeemer and left behind possessions that might expose Earth. A hidden Mystic Realm, technocrat traces, and the disappearance of Zac and Kenzie's mother remain unresolved. The Undead Empire has established a vast dead zone and continues expanding its forces. Zac also carries the Splinter of Oblivion, a potent but increasingly troubling influence. As this volume opens, Port Atwood is fighting the undead, investigating the Mystic Realm, and preparing an expedition through a newly discovered route into the Underworld.
Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)
Zac delays the Underworld expedition while he and Ogras recover, then visits the monastery. Thousands of monks summon the eighty-fourth incarnation of the Lotus Emperor, who has come to remove the abbot and his followers from Earth rather than join its wars. The abbot briefly grants Zac karmic sight, revealing several remaining ties to the Great Redeemer through Salvation's possessions. Before departing, the monks condense their will into a plain knife able to sever those connections. The Lotus Emperor removes the entire mountain sanctuary and its inhabitants, leaving Earth without their protection. Their departure also places Zac first on all three world ladders and grants him the Frontrunner title. At Mystic Island, the knife identifies a stone token among Salvation's effects. Zac destroys it, cutting the known beacon, but the act releases a manifestation of the Great Redeemer.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
The Great Redeemer's manifestation recognizes Zac and Ogras and threatens future retaliation. Zac keeps Salvation's remaining materials under controlled study, then enters the Underworld disguised as the undead Mr. Black alongside Joanna, a Tal-Eladar beastmaster, and Port Atwood's expedition leader. They arrive at Underworld Nexus, a neutral town divided among commercial, military, and independent interests. Its true ruler is Smaug, a wealthy treasure-user. An attempted meeting becomes an ambush when Smaug attacks with arrays and elemental constructs. Zac defeats and captures him. Smaug claims the merchant-led Union kidnapped his sister and forced the assault. He also alleges that the Union secretly trades captives to invaders and hides the destruction of settlements behind the fire-golem war. Port Atwood decides to verify the accusation. Smaug conceals the delegation's survival and moves them into his hidden base, allowing reinforcements to enter the Underworld covertly.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Port Atwood attacks a Union transit camp and finds captives from all four founding races, confirming the slave trade. Emily recognizes Millie, a schoolmate from destroyed Allentown, and learns that her brother Oscar is reportedly dead while her sister Johanna may be fighting with the Underworld Council. Smaug's sister Rima is recovered unharmed, but Smaug admits exaggerating her immediate danger to push Zac into attacking the Union. He accepts a five-hundred-year service contract under Joanna. Zac breaches the Union headquarters and captures most of its leadership. Calrin's investigation separates those directly enriched by slavery, and nearly two-thirds are executed. Port Atwood takes the Union's lord network, records, and infrastructure. Representatives of the Underworld Council initially question Zac's undead nature and his use of former invaders, but discussions open a path toward cooperation. Zac promises an assault on the fire-golem incursion within three weeks.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Seeking strength for his undead class, Zac enters a cavern occupied by enhanced battle roaches. A limited quest seals him inside and requires him to stop their king from completing a rare evolution. Zac improves his defensive fighting, reaches level 60, and chooses the Profane Seal class quest, which requires defeating an enemy at least thirty levels above him. Meanwhile, the undead block Port Atwood's teleportation network. Alea determines that the zombie hordes are tracing a continent-scale array and orders thousands of trapped personnel to break out on foot. Zac reaches the level-94 roach king and kills it by turning the Primordial Breath Amanita's mist into a means of spreading decay. He earns the mushroom, the Winds of Decay skill, and Profane Seal. His victory is immediately interrupted when a technocrat researcher enters through a hidden passage, recognizes his undead race, and reveals that the cavern's unusual beasts were deliberately modified.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
A technocrat scanner reacts to the amulet left by Zac's missing mother, Leandra, and identifies its owner as a sought traitor. Zac captures and questions the researcher. Before dying, it confirms that a high-ranking defector fled with something valuable and that its company plans a planetary scan that could expose Leandra's traces and endanger Kenzie. Zac chooses to eliminate this threat before searching for Port Atwood's missing army. Kenzie remains in the Mystic Realm with the amulet, while Zac and Ogras travel to the concealed incursion. A dense surveillance grid exposes them, turning infiltration into a direct assault. After destroying combat drones, they receive a System quest rewarding attacks on the technocrats. They breach the settlement's defenses and discover hundreds of personnel, giant war machines, a Nexus Hub, a foreman, and four E-grade bodyguards. With retreat and teleportation restricted, Zac prepares to trap the leadership while Ogras fights the machines.
Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)
Zac and Ogras tear through the technocrat camp while Port Atwood's stranded army continues its desperate retreat under Alea and Ilvere. At the camp, foreman Sivis and four bodyguards withdraw toward the Nexus Hub. Sivis's apparently dead body then transforms into a metal-flesh weapon approaching D-grade power. It breaks Zac's Profane Seal, destroys his manifested tool spirit, and nearly kills both attackers before becoming inert without explanation. Zac stores the body. While they recover, hidden technocrats make a final attempt to reach the Hub, but Zac and Ogras ambush them. Closing the Nexus Hub permanently cuts the company's route to Earth and completes their quests. Zac secures production equipment, robot parts, and materials, though he remains wary of using the technology. With the immediate technocrat scan prevented, Ogras returns to organize a rescue for Port Atwood's army, while the mysteries surrounding Leandra, Sivis, and the recovered devices remain.
Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)
Zac, Ogras, Kenzie, Tilia, and eight Valkyries follow the missing army's trail through devastated territory. Evidence at Bao Kui shows severe Port Atwood losses and a prolonged running battle. They finally find the survivors surrounded by much larger undead forces. Alea uses a concealed poison strike to kill thousands, but spectral undead shatter her soul. Sui and the Valkyries keep her alive while Ilvere takes frontline command. Zac arrives and destroys the undead vanguard, elite cultivators, defensive array, and unholy beacons in a rapid counterattack, saving the depleted force. The victory does not stop the larger plan. The Lich King overseeing the campaign learns of Zac's intervention and continues preparing the planet-scale array intended to convert Earth into a death-attuned world. Alea falls unconscious, leaving her survival dependent on treatment beyond the rescuers' present abilities.
Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)
Alea's soul is nearly destroyed, so Zac sends her to Port Atwood with Sui and the Valkyries and commits enormous funds to finding a cure. She is placed in an expensive stasis array near the Tree of Ascension, but stasis can only preserve her. Calrin concludes that Earth cannot presently buy the required treatment, making the Tower of Eternity a likely source. Zac learns from a powerful Jix representative that the undead conversion array is already functional and may activate within weeks. The representative gives him a one-use device capable of interrupting the Lich King's castle arrays for a moment. Zac sets a four-week deadline for the Dead Zone assault. Before then, he returns to the Underworld as Mr. Black. With Verana's Tal-Eladar beasts and allied demons, he destroys the Abyssal Demon leadership, then closes the human and fishlike incursions. Only the fire-golem incursion remains below.
Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)
Zac prepares a public Port Atwood campaign against the fire golems and secures the Underworld Council's promise of nearly two hundred thousand experienced warriors for the surface war once the incursion falls. At the fortified approach, he clears an array field of destructive towers, allowing the combined forces to advance. The expected final battle never occurs. The golems have already evacuated through their Nexus Hub, leaving traps behind. Port Atwood and the Council close the incursion and divide control of its enormous fire-attuned crystal mine. With all known Underworld invasions removed, Zac can redirect attention toward the undead. Port Atwood now controls the former Union network, shares a major resource source with the Council, and has gained a large allied army. The settlement's immediate focus shifts to a different risk: Kenzie's array for opening Salvation's stolen Origin Dao funnel.
Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)
After closing another surface incursion, Zac reserves the Origin Dao experiment for Port Atwood personnel. Kenzie's three-layer containment array is designed to spread or dissipate the energy if the inner concentration proves overwhelming. The participants enter voluntarily, with Zac and Ogras closest to the funnel. When it opens, stolen impressions and hostile visions flood the array. Zac focuses on his axe path and fuses his peak Heaviness and Sharpness seeds into the Fragment of the Axe. The energy also produces ghostlike manifestations and silver forehead marks resembling Salvation's. Zac uses his Tree field to suppress them, but the experiment ends with seven deaths and ten people in comas. Survivors gain major Dao progress, while Zac also advances his Rot and Hardness seeds. Zac and Ogras conclude that the stolen energy carried the resentment of Salvation's victims. They begin discreetly watching everyone who bore a silver mark because the experiment may have created new links to the Great Redeemer.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
Zac tests his Axe Fragment but discovers that his two linked classes must evolve together and divide their qualifications. After reaching level 75 in his undead class and completing its mass-kill quest, he is finally offered paired E-grade paths. The imbalance between his offensive Axe Fragment and his other Dao prevents the strongest result, so he decides to seek a death-aligned defensive fragment before evolving. Verana refuses more immediate operations after the Tal-Eladar losses, though earlier trade and training agreements remain. Zac clears the manageable incursions alone as Mr. Black, leaving only powers tied to the greater undead conflict and existing allied factions. Calrin equips him with nearly four billion Nexus coins and Tower supplies. Zac then joins Ilvere and the Underworld Council in a strike against undead command groups, confirms Alea remains stable but unconscious, and departs secretly with Ogras for the Tower of Eternity.
Story so far - through chapter 74 (this book)
At the Tower base town, Zac and Ogras meet Galau, an Allbright cultivator who wants to become a traveling merchant. He helps them navigate shops and auctions, but ordinary sellers have no cure for Alea. They agree to carry him to level 32 in exchange for three billion Nexus coins and Dao treasures. When a gifted imperial prince manifests the Eight Calamities Titan, Zac resonates with one of its aspects and gains the Fragment of the Coffin. The new defensive fragment may support his undead evolution, though he still lacks a fully balanced path. On Earth, the Undead Empire activates its environmental conversion array earlier than expected. The sky fills with miasma, scouts near its pillars are instantly transformed, and normal weapons prove ineffective. Thea organizes the response while Zac and Ogras remain away. Kenzie and Ilvere approach an outer pillar, and Jeeves-guided drones destroy it, beginning a campaign that can delay the array but not yet stop it.
Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)
Zac enters the elite Zethaya Pill House and learns that its treasury holds the Prajna cherry, a soul treasure that could treat Alea. Boje Zethaya offers it for a major service or comparably valuable research material. Before an agreement is reached, Rasuliel Tsarun asserts an earlier claim and provokes Zac over Alea and the disputed Thayer Consortium license. The Splinter of Oblivion takes control. Zac transforms, destroys much of the pill house, and awakens badly injured after killing Rasuliel. Because the Tower tokens judge Ogras and Galau complicit, all three flee bounty hunters and enter the Tower of Eternity. Outside, Boje assigns responsibility to Rasuliel, charges his clan for the destruction and cherry, and limits disclosure of Zac's abnormal transformation. Zac registers as Zac Piker, hoping his mother's apparent surname might reach Leandra. Rasuliel's ring contains both the Prajna cherry and a crystallized Pathfinder Oracle eye. Zac has obtained the resources he sought, but one of the splinter's nine containing runes has vanished.
Story so far - through chapter 88 (this book)
Zac, Ogras, and Galau begin the Tower climb while Zac recovers from the pill-house battle. Their first trial sends them to investigate fallen goblin raids. They trace the attacks to a cursed crown beneath an abandoned watchtower and destroy it. Subsequent levels test combat, investigation, escort work, and judgment. The group harvests longevity pearls, defeats bandits, helps simians locate a hidden inheritance, and clears a collapsing kingdom without unnecessary killing. Zac defeats the first-floor guardian and gains a permanent Tower title plus an ice-shield skill crystal that may suit Kenzie. He also confirms that his Coffin Dao can refine poison into usable energy. Galau's inspection abilities repeatedly help solve anomalies, while his martial training and desire for a merchant class become clearer. The group learns that entering together strengthens enemies, but cooperation still carries them through the early floors.
Story so far - through chapter 95 (this book)
The group clears the third floor after Ogras defeats a tribal chieftain through shadow tactics and gains an improved Tower title. On the fourth floor, they enter a war against devils and prevent a void fire array from activating, escaping with its core and flags before an elite enemy arrives. Zac recognizes that Tower time dilation prevents new Dao insight and that an arcane class will require genuine creation, not merely stronger inherited fragments. Meanwhile, Kenzie and Ilvere continue destroying undead pillars. A level-85 undead woman ambushes them and breaks their flying treasure. Jeeves controls Kenzie's mecha as a decoy while they escape underground, and Kenzie orders it to self-destruct near their attacker. She heads back toward Port Atwood with most drones spent and the enemy's fate unknown. At sea, Port Atwood ships encounter a miasma-covered fleet formed by a temporary alliance between undead and Holy Church crusaders, creating another immediate threat near Pangaea.
Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)
Zac, Ogras, and Galau continue through Tower scenarios, escaping a mountain sect, capturing a paranoid target, and destroying desert bandits. At the oasis on level 31, Galau reveals that group carries cannot continue beyond the fourth floor and that only the principal contributor to a guardian victory receives its greatest rewards. He compensates Ogras for withholding the rule and gives Zac a token to Nal Avadar. Galau then leaves the group, incapacitates a local merchant, and opens Beroria Goods and Treasures with items he secretly stole during earlier trials. His concealed specialty includes four thievery skills, and he regards Zac as a potentially valuable future ally. Zac and Ogras proceed alone, now able to use abilities they had hidden from Galau. Their next trial places them atop a colossal ancestral beast under attack by parasites. The mission is to redirect the creature, and they set out toward its head. The climb remains unfinished. Alea is still in stasis, the Prajna cherry has not yet been administered, the Undead Empire's conversion array remains active, and Port Atwood faces the hostile fleet.
How does it end? (ending)
Zac and Ogras remain inside the Tower of Eternity at chapter 98. Galau has revealed his concealed thievery specialty, left the group at level 31, and opened a shop in a Tower oasis after giving Zac a token to Nal Avadar. Zac and Ogras begin their next trial on the back of a colossal ancestral beast, with orders to redirect it. Zac holds the Prajna cherry, which may heal Alea, and a crystallized Pathfinder Oracle eye that may help his Duplicity Core, but neither problem is resolved. His Oblivion splinter has already caused a fatal loss of control and has lost one of its containing runes. Alea remains unconscious in stasis. On Earth, the Undead Empire's self-sustaining conversion array is active, and only destruction of its Dead Zone core can stop it. Kenzie and Ilvere escape a powerful undead ambush after sacrificing her mecha, leaving her combat resources depleted. Port Atwood also faces a hostile fleet formed by undead and Holy Church forces. Leandra, Jeeves's origin, Sivis's inert transformed body, the Great Redeemer's possible links, and Zac's balanced class evolution all remain open.
