In short (whole book)

Zac leads Port Atwood through the collapse of the Mystic Realm, defeats Adcarkas, and survives the dimensional seed's escape after awakening a corrupted Void Emperor bloodline. Rhubat sacrifices the other Anointed to kill Adcarkas, while Ogras saves Kenzie and is swallowed by the seed; he and Billy are later confirmed alive inside it. Three years later, Earth is stable under Zac, but Kenzie's attempt to evolve Jeeves draws their mother, who takes Kenzie off-world and secretly strands the surviving Thea on Goldblade Continent. Zac completes a perfect soul reincarnation, upgrades his skills, expands his economic power, and prepares Earth for his absence. Traveling as a Draugr with Velary, he reaches Twilight Harbor and conditionally joins Cathaya's expedition for the Twilight Ascent. The expedition is unknowingly tied to the Twilight Lord's pursuit of autarky, drawing the attention of major outside powers.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Zac became the cultivator leader of Earth and Port Atwood, with Kenzie, Ogras, and Thea Marshall among his closest allies. Their struggle brought them into a vast ancient research base within the Mystic Realm. A dimensional seed at the facility's core offered both extraordinary opportunity and a threat to everyone trapped there. Rival native groups, the Zhix, the Dominators, the Church of Everlasting Dao, and other factions all had competing plans for escape, conquest, or control. Zac also carried unresolved dangers tied to his unusual cultivation, the off-world enemy Voridis A'Heliophos, and the safety of Earth. As the seed approached maturity, Zac had to balance a race toward the core with responsibility for the thousands of people depending on Port Atwood.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Zac accepts a compulsory route into Inner Laboratory 16, hoping it will lead toward the dimensional seed before maturation. He coordinates with Rhubat so the Zhix delay their Crusade while his smaller party moves inward. Leviala agrees to guide him but returns to her politically divided clan with injuries caused by her time-related sight. Ogras faces a different internal danger as his bonded shadow creature alters his body and threatens his autonomy. Kenzie joins Zac, Ogras, and Thea Marshall with Jeeves and technocrat equipment, while Port Atwood prepares defenses behind them. The party enters the inner base through covert maintenance routes and finds sealed storage filled with hostile battle machines. Kenzie breaks the exit barrier long enough for everyone to escape, confirming both the value and limits of her access to the ancient systems. The group continues toward its meeting with Leviala as the deadline closes in.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Leviala's clan intercepts Zac's party after staged evidence turns it against Port Atwood. A spring-root test exposes Church of Everlasting Dao shapeshifters among the clan soldiers, but the warning does not end the risk of war. Leviala guides the group into Laboratory 16, then takes an experimental spatial drill and traps the others inside, choosing her clan's attempted escape over Zac's alliance. While Kenzie repairs an unfinished two-person escape pod, Zac completes a training task by finding opportunities for Ogras and Thea. Ogras receives a corporeal serum that can change his race, and Thea receives a crystal suited to her second spirit tool. The escape pod can carry only Zac and Kenzie, leaving Ogras and Thea in the laboratory. Just before the pair depart, Thea makes her romantic interest in Zac explicit with a kiss. The unstable pod sends Zac and Kenzie toward the outer base rather than directly to Port Atwood.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Adcarkas uses Inevitability and the dimensional seed in a ritual intended to free himself from his former master's karmic control. Elsewhere, Zac and Kenzie return to find Leviala's clan attacking Port Atwood with thousands of machines. Kenzie disables the mechanical formations long enough for Zac and the defenders to destroy them. Zac kills the clan's second elder, Rhubat kills another elder, and the remaining army self-destructs rather than surrender. Leviala dies after ending the eye curse that powered her time ability. Her clan's surviving datamancer takes her eyes and attempts to escape with the spatial drill, but Zac claims the device before the datamancer vanishes into the void. The dimensional seed's maturation then tears apart the research base, reshaping the Mystic Realm into failing islands surrounding a central mountain. With the outer fragments disintegrating, the System declares that only people carrying spatial seals from the mountain will be evacuated. Zac is tasked with bringing his followers there and securing seals for thousands.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

Zac leads roughly five thousand people across unstable islands while void exposure, collapsing bridges, base defenses, and hostile creatures steadily reduce the force. After they kill a powerful void beast, Zac's Void Heart absorbs part of its core. A message confirms that Thea and Ogras survived Laboratory 16 and are already fighting Church forces near the mountain. Ogras has used the corporeal serum to become a mutated Planeswalker Demon. When the Church destroys the last normal route, Kenzie uses the captured spatial drill to bore a one-use tunnel to Taboo Mountain. Zac enters directly into the enemy's prepared defenses. Rhubat and the Anointed activate the ancestral spear Judgment, whose spectral Zhix suppress the hostile arrays. Ogras and Thea strike from the rear while Billy and the main army protect the portal. Zac and the spectral Zhix break the Church's principal formation, opening the way for Port Atwood's counterattack. The army has gained access to the mountain, but the battle continues and most of Zac's followers still need seals.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

An off-world pill house agrees to create an antidote that can restore the Zhix Anointed's ability to cultivate, although taking it will remove most of their serum-granted strength. On Taboo Mountain, Zac prioritizes seals and Earth-bound enemies over a direct rush toward the seed. He learns that Voridis A'Heliophos is still trying to trace him through a karmic connection as the realm's spatial upheaval spreads beyond the Mystic Realm. Zac's forces collect seals and treasures at higher elevations, and Kenzie develops a drone-scouting service for dangerous caves. Zac enters a damaged bloodline-treatment pod and consumes several rare resources to keep its process going. The awakening runs out of control and drains a vast section of the mountain, but the released spatial energy provides more than fifteen hundred seals for Port Atwood. Zac emerges at level 88 with a corrupted D-grade Void Emperor bloodline and a talent called Force of the Void. His initial tests show that the talent improves or widens his energy circulation, but he does not yet understand its greater purpose.

Story so far - through chapter 47 (this book)

Zac uses Force of the Void to help rescue more than a hundred True Sky refugees from the Collector. After their government abandons them, the survivors offer their bloodline research and seek membership in Port Atwood. Zac accepts them and learns enough from their records to establish conscious control over his new bloodline talent. His army then destroys the remaining cultists and traitor Zhix, while the freed gemlings agree to join Port Atwood under compensated terms. The gemlings provide a device intended to destabilize the Dominators' taboo treasure. Zac forms a summit party with Kenzie, Ogras, Billy, Rhubat, and thirty Anointed. They climb through the mountain's suppression, recover technocrat supercomputers for Jeeves, and earn the Weight of Sin title upon reaching the summit. After testing a spatial rune with a cultist's body, Zac uses it and is transported alone into a hidden, Dao-rich domain at the realm's center.

Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)

The Church traps Zac's summit party in a fire array, but Force of the Void lets him attack beyond the enclosure. The array collapses into an uncontrolled detonation that kills the cultists and eight Anointed. Zac's group reaches a technocrat prison where genetic locks confirm that he and Kenzie share a bloodline connection to its builders. At the dimensional seed, they discover that Adcarkas has possessed a relative's body and is trying to fuse with the seed rather than deliver it to Voridis A'Heliophos. A werewolf leader temporarily joins Zac against him, but the facility's corrupted administrator awakens and attempts to seize Kenzie. Kenzie disables it at great cost. Rhubat then absorbs the seals and lives of the twenty-two remaining Anointed and uses Judgment to destroy Adcarkas's heart. Adcarkas dies and Zac destroys his remains. During the final exchange, Ogras saves Kenzie from being thrown into the seed and is pulled inside instead. The containment sphere explodes, leaving Zac with an unconscious Kenzie as the System gives him thirty-two seconds to brand the dimensional seed.

Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)

Zac bargains with the surviving administrator for Kenzie's release by giving it creation energy. The resulting transformation destabilizes the dimensional seed and draws the Collector. Voridis A'Heliophos arrives in a damaged vessel and tries to mark Zac, but interference from Voridis's companion gives Zac time to destroy the rune. The administrator, Collector, Voridis, and seed clash as the realm collapses. The seed briefly enters Zac, opens his third hidden node, strengthens his bloodline talent, and escapes through a break in reality. Zac rescues the dying Rhubat and returns to Earth with Kenzie. Two weeks later, his new node is purifying foreign influences from his body, while Voridis has left no trace. Kenzie cannot locate those swallowed by the seed. A separate view confirms that Ogras and Billy are alive together inside its shifting internal world, but their seals are gone and they have no way home. The immediate Mystic Realm crisis is over, but the seed has become a future rescue objective.

Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)

Three years pass. Zac reaches level 101, consolidates sovereignty over Earth, and slows his leveling to protect his unusually demanding foundation. Port Atwood integrates the gemlings and most True Sky survivors, while Thea and Zac live as partners. Kenzie secretly sells array breakers through Calrin to finance Jeeves's class-two evolution. The attempt draws a heavenly tribulation and the arrival of Zac and Kenzie's mother, an overwhelmingly powerful technocrat cultivator. She calls Jeeves a digital nexus, declares Kenzie's evolution premature, and suppresses the tribulation. She uses Thea to divert the lightning, takes Kenzie away for controlled off-world training, and warns that the siblings' complementary origins become dangerous when brought together. She also reveals that Ogras and the others remain alive inside the sentient seed, which is expected to bloom into a pocket world in the Million Gates Territory. Jeeves preserves hidden records for Kenzie, who intends to return. Zac is left on Earth without a route to Kenzie and with Thea's fate unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

Zac conceals his mother's involvement by reporting that Kenzie and Thea were killed by an unknown powerful cultivator. Emily draws him out of grief and pushes him to resume the pursuit of strength. Zac promises to remain for Earth's assimilation before seeking vengeance, then reveals his secret Einherjar force and orders Triv to secure service contracts from powerful undead prisoners. He undertakes the first reincarnation of the Nine Reincarnations Manual, shattering his soul and forcing its fragments back together. By expending paired life-death treasures and briefly releasing pressure from the imprisoned Creation and Oblivion remnants, he achieves a perfect single soul core. The result strengthens his mental defense, Dao comprehension, and control, but weakens the remnants' containment. Zac shares what he learned with a revenant follower before sending her into the Crown of Despair trial. He then fuses four outdated skills into E-grade replacements, including the devastating Arcadia's Judgment, and obtains a new defensive skill. With his cultivation rebuilt, he begins an off-world preparation plan.

Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)

Using a concealment array from his mother, Zac travels anonymously to complete limited-title trials and process his grief. He earns Equanimity at Havenfort Chasm, gains another physical title in a volcanic trial, and enters the Big Axe Coliseum as Arcaz. There he wins five battles, develops a usable life-and-war Dao braid, and studies a founder's axe insights. Multiple senior figures warn that a heaven-sanctioned war is approaching Zecia. Zac returns to Earth, secures control of the Thayer Consortium's mercantile license, and asks senior allies to restrain major conflicts during an absence that may last years. Rhubat, restored to E-grade through the Anointment antidote, pledges the Zhix hives to Earth's defense. Velary returns from a successful Dao-repository trial, and Zac introduces her hidden Einherjar to Joanna's Valkyries for limited cooperation. Zac then leaves Earth with Velary in his Draugr identity. He postpones the search for Ogras and Billy until he is strong enough and has a vessel suited to the Million Gates Territory.

Story so far - through chapter 87 (this book)

Thea is revealed alive on Goldblade Continent. Zac and Kenzie's mother has kept her separated from Earth and arranged matters so both the System and Earth regard her as dead. Thea resolves to become strong enough to escape. Meanwhile, Zac and Velary arrive at Twilight Harbor, where Nala guides them through a city sustained by balanced life and death energies from the Twilight Ocean. Cathaya traces Zac through residue on a token linked to his human identity, forcing him to defend his cover as the pure-blood Draugr Arkhas Black. He prevents her from reporting him and accepts a conditional place in her Twilight Ascent group in exchange for skills, accommodation, auction access, and a chance to pursue life-death pearls. Behind Cathaya's expedition, the Twilight Lord intends her route to mark a ley line for his attempt to reach autarky. The Eternal Clan and other powers are moving to contest that opportunity. Zac ends the book entering an alliance whose full purpose neither he nor Cathaya understands, while Kenzie, Thea, Ogras, and Billy all remain alive but beyond his reach.

How does it end? (ending)

Zac leaves Earth in his concealed Draugr identity with Velary and reaches Twilight Harbor, where he adopts the name Arkhas Black. Cathaya traces him through an old token, but he prevents her from exposing him and conditionally joins her Twilight Ocean expedition in exchange for skills, auction access, and a chance to seek life-death pearls. Cathaya does not know that her master expects her route to mark a ley line for the Twilight Lord. The Twilight Ascent is becoming a wider contest over the Twilight Lord's attempt to reach autarky, with the Eternal Clan and other powers moving to interfere. On Earth, Joanna and Velary's forces have arranged cooperation, while Triv and the Zhix remain among its defenders. Kenzie is training off-world under her mother's control, with Jeeves still retaining an autonomous core. Thea is alive but stranded on Goldblade Continent, although Earth and the System regard her as dead. Ogras and Billy remain alive inside the dimensional seed's future pocket world. Voridis A'Heliophos is still at large. Zac intends to grow strong enough to recover those taken from him while preserving Earth through its coming assimilation.
