In short (whole book)
After escaping Orom, Zac returns to rebuild his position and resolves the Ensolus incursion by stabilizing the planet and bringing its native powers into the Atwood Empire. Seeking a living Worldeater for a future vessel, he borrows Gaun Sorom's identity and joins Voidgate's Task 1032. Saboteurs destroy a spatial cortex, stranding Zac and researcher Vi deep in the Void Star. They uncover blood-cursed infiltrators, capture a rare space-attuned Worldeater, and follow signals from the Left Imperial Palace. Zac claims a second seal fragment and creates Void Vajra Sublimation after discovering that the original Sangha technique would imprison his consciousness. The second temple collapses into a pillar of contained madness. Vi is abducted but leaves Zac a trail, and Zac encounters Ogras alive but altered as competing factions converge on the inheritance.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zac founded the Atwood Empire and followed intertwined cultivation paths of life and death. He also maintained the public Draugr identity Arcaz Black. His closest ties included Kenzie, his sister, and Ogras, his demon companion. The spirit consciousness Alea inhabited his weapon Love's Bond, while the plant companion Vivi supported him with binding and defensive abilities. Velary and Joanna served among Port Atwood's leaders, Triv managed Zac's household, and Emily trained as his disciple. Catheya was an ally connected to the undead powers, and the departed Lord of Cycles remained Zac's inheritance teacher. These relationships and divided obligations shaped Zac's position as he continued building an empire of living and undead citizens.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Zac returns to Port Atwood after more than six years away and finds the Ensolus incursion close to war. The spectral kingdom attacks during a summit and attempts to seize Fort Atwood's Nexus Hub, but Zac intervenes, kills its king, and forces the remaining leaders to surrender. Rather than strip Ensolus of either life or death, he offers to stabilize the planet with a pair of linked realm spirits in exchange for allegiance. The installation triggers catastrophic earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, but the settlements survive and the planet settles. The Kingdom of Raun and the Mavai formally submit to the Atwood Empire, completing the incursion and giving Zac his first subordinate world. Ensolus may eventually become the empire's public commercial face while Earth remains concealed. The illusionist Janos is still missing in the temple region, and Ilvir is authorized to organize a search. Zac also reveals that Kenzie was abducted rather than killed and that Ogras is alive in the Million Gates territory, tying both recoveries to the wider war now approaching.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
With Ensolus integrated, Zac formalizes the Atwood Empire's expanded citizenship and chooses a delayed option that will let him determine a future assimilation location. He keeps his identities as Zac and Arcaz Black publicly separate. At home, Alea emerges from her cocoon able to project a temporary body, while Love's Bond evolves into a late E-grade tool with a chained axe form for Zac's Draugr side. Ogras, elsewhere in a mystic realm, approaches peak E-grade. Zac also learns of Voidgate's severe beast crisis and sees a chance to obtain the living Worldeater required for his planned cosmic vessel. Before leaving, he enters the second trial in the Towers of Myriad Dao. His life and death paths cannot sustain the cyclic structure demanded by the Dao wheel, so he breaks the trial by force. The Lord of Cycles explains that the wheel was a cosmic-core blueprint and concludes that Zac's volatile configuration cannot safely use it. Zac's path to hegemony therefore remains an unresolved design problem.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
The Lord of Cycles shows Zac the long and destructive process by which he forged a stable fire-and-ice cycle, but cannot devise an equivalent solution for Zac's life, death, and chaos. Zac leaves with cultivation resources, a dangerous escape treasure, the Book of Duality, and a plan to improve his transformation skill. He commissions an upgradeable vessel framework, learning that its later construction will require enormous funding and a living Worldeater with a strong soul. Unknown to him, the shipyard also intends to place a secret scanner in the vessel. Back on Earth, Velary prepares candidates for the future Million Gates expedition while the attempted fusion of Lily and an adolescent hive queen becomes a security threat. Zac travels covertly to Salosar Seven to investigate Voidgate's crisis. He selects the wandering axe cultivator Gaun Sorom as a usable cover identity, arranges a meeting, and defeats Gaun's ambush without killing him. The encounter leaves Zac ready to negotiate for the identity he needs to enter the dangerous operation.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Zac compels Gaun Sorom to rent him his identity for five years, paying for Gaun's relocation beyond Voidgate's sphere. Disguised as the wandering half-step hegemon, Zac enters Voidgate recruitment and selects Task 1032, a high-risk mission protecting researchers at a spatial anomaly. His private objective is a rare space-attuned ferric Worldeater for his vessel. Teo Kastella tests Zac and Vivi, accepts him as a reserve defender, and binds him to the mission's secrecy and protection terms. Zac is assigned to guard a peak E-grade Voidgate researcher with little real combat experience. He begins training his ward to function under killing intent before the expedition reaches the Void Star. Teo explains that the Void Star contains thousands of superimposed mystic realms whose routes have become unstable and overrun by beasts. As the force crosses the outer spatial film, Zac experiences an unexplained ancient scene involving a fortress, a stirring pillar, and Three Virtues returning a white pebble to a teacher.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
The vision leaves Zac physically injured, but he conceals it and enters the Void Star with Task 1032. A solar flare destroys the transport and kills its pilots, forcing the survivors through a dangerous realm convergence. The expedition then fights through possessed beasts and damaged waystations while Zac repeatedly senses the same ancient presence deeper inside the layered realms. During a permitted search in a fire-attuned lake, Zac finds a hidden cavity containing rubble from the vision's citadel. A scout who touches it is erased. Zac halts the same effect with Void Zone, and the fragment accepts him, merges with his soul aperture, and grants insights that advance his understanding of the Book of Duality and a possible void-based body-tempering path. He receives a quest to form the Seal of the Left Imperial Palace as one of four Flame Bearers. Major outside factions detect that a candidate has been accepted and begin preparing young contenders, while the expedition faces a new insect breach beneath the lake.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Task 1032 survives the insect tide but suffers heavy losses before reaching the spatial cortex it was sent to stabilize. During the shunt installation, Ilka murders chief researcher Rakosta Kau and joins Uzu and another concealed hegemon in sabotaging the operation. The cortex ruptures and destroys the realm, scattering the expedition. Zac survives by exposing hidden strength and reaches a dark inner realm with Vi and the wounded Uzu. Uzu admits that he serves invaders preparing for war against Zekia and offers Zac safe advancement if he kills Vi. Zac refuses, kills him, and destroys the blood curse released from his corpse. Vi explains that protection supplied by her descendant Leara Lioris saved her, and Zac reveals his real identity. Now allies, they conclude that the invaders are destabilizing the Void Star and also searching for the Left Imperial Palace. Vi helps lure two ferric Worldeater kings. Zac kills the ordinary guardian and captures the rare space-attuned specimen alive, securing the essential living component for his future vessel.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
The cortex collapse cuts off the return route, so Zac and Vi travel inward toward the next Left Imperial Palace signal. They cross a primal garden and Ramsi Wall, gathering rare resources as Vi breaks through a long stagnation and forms a spatial Dao branch. In the poisonous Andrusian Sea, an ambush by apparent Voidgate personnel exposes more blood-cursed fighters. Zac and Vi kill the attackers and shelter in a hidden facility while a seasonal toxin tide consumes the realm. A journal identifies the fallen Templar Unser Kalka and explains that he willingly accepted a curse to restart his cultivation, later regretted it, and gathered intelligence in repentance. His records point toward infiltrator-controlled routes and a stellar ladder leading toward Million Gates. During the enforced delay, Zac studies the original Boundless Vajra Sublimation. Its heart practice temporarily shifts his convictions toward detachment, but Void Zone and a resetter restore him. He begins redesigning the method around personally held truths and void energy. The palace signal then surges, forcing him to prioritize the next fragment.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
After the poisonous season weakens, Zac and Vi leave warnings for Voidgate and resume their journey. They avoid or destroy multiple infiltrator groups, pass through failed realms, and follow the second seal signal into a vast forest populated by hostile humanoid beasts. An ancient temple stands inside a valley surrounded by tens of thousands of meditating creatures. Zac leaves Vi hidden with supplies and fights his way inside alone. The temple accepts him and a figurine asks whether the Flame Bearer will break the chains or become another link. In the resulting epiphany, Zac discovers that the third layer of Boundless Vajra Sublimation would imprison his consciousness inside a Sangha-controlled body. He replaces its boundlessness structure with 81 void sigils and completes his own Void Vajra Sublimation. He also remakes an undead skill into Arbiter of the Abyss and advances both his life and death Dao branches. Zac now believes Ultum and the Left Imperial Palace form a much wider inheritance struggle, while Three Virtues's intentions remain uncertain.
Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)
Beyond the Void Star, the Undead Empire orders Zac to choose death and join its side. Catheya searches for him under that mandate, while the Star Beast Alliance and other outside powers establish positions around the Left Imperial Palace contest. At the temple, Zac takes a tattered scroll but cannot move its cracked altar. The valley collapses into a singularity as he escapes. Nine sigils contain the catastrophe, transforming it into a towering pillar of condensed madness that draws attention across the realm. Zac returns to Vi's hiding place and finds blood plus a deliberate space-Dao trail, evidence that she was taken alive and expects him to follow. An invisible shadow attacker then assaults him. The attacker is Ogras, alive but altered and initially unable to recognize Zac. A corruptive goblin spirit within Shadewar carries the same aura as the new pillar and survives Zac's attempt to destroy it. Ogras tests Zac with private knowledge from Earth, supporting their mutual recognition, but the reunion remains unresolved. Zac ends the book in the Void Star with two seal fragments and the temple scroll, following Vi's abductors as the inheritance contest and approaching war converge.
How does it end? (ending)
Zac remains stranded in the Void Star with Vivi, a living space-attuned ferric Worldeater, two Left Imperial Palace seal fragments, and a tattered temple scroll. His new Void Vajra Sublimation works, and his life and death Dao branches have advanced, but his cosmic-core design and vessel remain unfinished. Vi has been taken alive and leaves a deliberate spatial trail for him to follow. Ogras reappears as an altered shadow attacker who only gradually recognizes Zac, while the goblin spirit within Shadewar carries the same corruptive aura as the madness released by the collapsing temple. Ensolus is stable and subordinate to the Atwood Empire, but Kenzie remains abducted, Janos remains missing, and the wider Million Gates war is approaching. Catheya is searching for Zac under an Undead Empire edict that demands his allegiance to death. Outside factions and blood-cursed invaders are also pursuing the Left Imperial Palace and Ultum, leaving Zac caught in an inheritance contest that now threatens Zekia.
