He accepts command of the old Leopard for a difficult transport voyage to New South Wales, although carrying convicts and a crowded complement offers little of the distinction of a fighting commission.

Once discovered, his medical usefulness and connection to Wogan make his position aboard the ship more complicated than a simple breach of discipline.

Leopard's first lieutenant, a competent officer with strong views about professional practice and his own prospects. Grant does not share Jack's instinctive confidence in every extreme measure, and the strain of a damaged ship and prolonged danger places increasing weight on their disagreement.
