Diamonds Are Forever recap

British intelligence sends James Bond undercover as diamond courier Peter Franks to trace stones being smuggled from African mines through London to the United States. His contact Tiffany Case directs him into a payment system run by the Spangled Mob. In New York and Saratoga, Bond reconnects with Felix Leiter and learns that the syndicate joins smuggling to fixed racing and other rackets. The trail leads to Las Vegas, where Bond wins conspicuously, is seized by Seraffimo Spang, and is taken to the gangster's private ghost town. He escapes, and Tiffany turns against the mob to help him. Seraffimo dies during their flight, but killers Wint and Kidd pursue the couple onto the Queen Elizabeth; Bond kills them when they attack Tiffany. He then returns to Africa and kills Jack Spang as the remaining brother tries to escape, closing the diamond pipeline.

James Bond is an experienced agent of the British Secret Service, designated 007 and authorized to kill when an assignment requires it. His recent missions have taken him through a deadly casino contest against a Soviet paymaster, a confrontation with the criminal operator Mr. Big in the United States and Caribbean, and the defeat of industrialist Hugo Drax's plan to destroy London. He remains under the command of M and has a close American friend in former CIA officer Felix Leiter.

A large stream of diamonds is disappearing from mines in British-controlled West Africa and entering an illicit international route. M orders James Bond to investigate from the courier level upward. Scotland Yard's Ronnie Vallance explains what is known about the London end and provides access to a captured smuggler's identity. Bond will pose as Peter Franks, carry a parcel of stones, and allow the criminals to guide him to their American receivers. The assignment begins with little information about who ultimately controls the trade, so Bond must protect his cover while observing every link in the chain.

Bond meets Tiffany Case, the guarded American who handles the London transfer. Following her instructions, he conceals the diamonds and flies to New York as Peter Franks. Tiffany keeps her distance while Bond delivers the package and is brought before Shady Tree, a representative of the organization. Rather than pay him directly, Tree tells him to place a supplied stake on a horse at Saratoga; the expected winnings will serve as his courier fee. Bond recognizes that the arrangement reaches beyond smuggling into American gambling rackets, but he still has no direct route to the leaders.

At Saratoga, Bond unexpectedly meets Felix Leiter, now a Pinkerton detective investigating race fixing. Their cases converge on the same criminal organization. Bond's nominal task is simply to place a directed bet and collect his courier payment, while Leiter's inquiries expose how the Spangled Mob uses bribery and threats around the racecourse. Bond learns more about the syndicate's reach without yet identifying its leaders. The organization responds harshly to anyone who costs it money or breaks its rules: Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, a pair of professional enforcers, are used to punish those considered responsible and demonstrate the consequences of disobedience.

The syndicate's discipline is enforced through violence hidden behind legitimate businesses, including Morton Slumber's funeral establishment. Bond receives the rest of his payment but continues following the trail west. In Las Vegas he gains a local ally in taxi driver Ernie Cureo and enters the casinos connected to the Spangled Mob. Tiffany is also working there, still constrained by the organization. Bond deliberately attracts attention through his gambling and his questions, pressing closer to the western leader while placing both himself and Tiffany under increasing suspicion.

Bond is captured and taken to Spectreville, a private ghost town where Seraffimo Spang indulges his fascination with the Old West. After interrogation and abuse, Bond escapes the town and the mob's control. Tiffany chooses to help him rather than remain loyal to her employers, and their flight turns into a pursuit involving Spang's private train. Bond defeats the immediate threat and Seraffimo is killed. Bond and Tiffany make their way back east, believing they have broken the American end of the pipeline, and their earlier wary attraction develops into a closer relationship. The syndicate's surviving killers, however, remain at large.

Bond and Tiffany sail for Britain aboard the Queen Elizabeth. Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd follow them and attempt to murder Tiffany, but Bond interrupts the attack and kills both enforcers, then arranges the aftermath to protect her from implication. Bond cannot remain with Tiffany while the original mission is unfinished. He travels to West Africa and traces the pipeline to its source, where Seraffimo's brother Jack Spang has been operating under another identity. Spang attempts to escape by helicopter; Bond attacks the aircraft, which is destroyed, killing him. With both brothers dead and the source exposed, the diamond-smuggling network is closed. Bond is left contemplating how the coveted stones outlast the violent ambitions built around them.

Bond and Tiffany leave America aboard the Queen Elizabeth, but Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd follow them and try to kill Tiffany. Bond intervenes, kills both men, and arranges the scene to distance the deaths from their intended victim. Although his relationship with Tiffany has become personal, Bond returns to the assignment. He travels to West Africa to close the pipeline at its source, identifies Jack Spang behind another name, and attacks as Spang attempts to escape by helicopter. The aircraft is destroyed and Spang is killed, ending the brothers' control at both ends of the operation. Bond watches the recovered diamonds and reflects that the stones themselves endure while the people who pursue them do not.
