By Jeff Kinney

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Greg Heffley (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The narrator, a boy starting his first year of middle school. He keeps a journal at his mother's insistence and is quick to point out that it is not a diary. Convinced he is destined for fame, he spends the school year worrying about his place in the social pecking order and cooking up schemes that rarely work out the way he plans.

Rowley Jefferson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Greg's best friend, a cheerful, trusting boy who lives up the street. He is happy with childish things Greg considers embarrassing, and his easygoing nature makes him both Greg's favourite companion and the frequent victim of Greg's schemes. Their friendship is put under real strain as the year goes on.

Rodrick Heffley (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Greg's older brother, a teenager who plays drums in a band and takes every chance to tease, trick, and torment Greg at home.

Manny Heffley (Minor)

Appears from the start

Greg's little brother, a toddler who is indulged by their parents and, in Greg's view, never gets in trouble for anything.

Frank Heffley (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Greg's father, who would rather see his son outdoors being active than indoors playing video games.

Susan Heffley (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Greg's mother, who gave Greg the journal in the first place and tries to steer the family toward wholesome activities.

Fregley (Minor)

Appears from the start

An odd boy who lives on Greg's street and goes to his school, known for strange habits and no sense of personal space. Greg is paired with him during the school wrestling unit.
