Doctor No recap

After Jamaican station chief John Strangways and his secretary are murdered, M sends a recently recovered James Bond to investigate. Evidence points to Crab Key, a privately owned island whose guano operator, Doctor No, has frightened away scrutiny. Bond survives attempts on his life, exposes secretary Miss Taro as an enemy agent, and lands secretly on the island with his old ally Quarrel. There they meet shell collector Honeychile Rider. Doctor No's armored flame-throwing vehicle kills Quarrel and captures Bond and Honey. No reveals that he is disrupting American guided-missile tests for Soviet interests, then subjects Bond to a lethal obstacle course. Bond survives, escapes into the industrial works, and buries No beneath guano using a loading crane. Honey also escapes her intended death, and she and Bond flee the island together, ending No's operation.

James Bond is agent 007 of the British Secret Service under M. His assignments have included breaking a Soviet-backed financier at the casino tables, fighting the American and Caribbean network of Mr. Big, stopping Hugo Drax's attempted missile attack on London, and surviving a Soviet trap built around a false defection in Istanbul. At the end of that latest mission, Rosa Klebb struck him with poison concealed in her shoe. Bond has spent months recovering and is only now being considered fit for field duty. Quarrel, a Cayman fisherman who helped him during the Mr. Big case, remains a trusted contact in Jamaica.

In Jamaica, Secret Service station chief John Strangways and his secretary Mary Trueblood are murdered, and the killers remove evidence to make their disappearance look voluntary. In London, James Bond has recovered from the poisoning that nearly killed him, but M questions his fitness and judgment. The Service's weapons expert replaces Bond's light pistol with a Walther PPK and gives him a heavier backup weapon. M then sends Bond to Jamaica to determine what happened to Strangways, treating the inquiry as an undemanding return to work. At Kingston airport, a supposed official driver named Jones tries to take control of Bond's arrival. Bond recognizes the deception, and Jones kills himself rather than answer questions, confirming that the missing-station case is active and dangerous.

Colonial Secretary Pleydell-Smith gives Bond access to Strangways's papers. The missing officer had been investigating Crab Key, an island owned by the secretive Doctor No, after protected birds were destroyed and their wardens killed. Bond reconnects with Quarrel, the Cayman fisherman who assisted him on an earlier mission, and prepares a covert approach by sea. Attempts to frighten or kill Bond continue, and he discovers that Miss Taro, Pleydell-Smith's secretary, is passing information to his enemies. He turns an intended ambush against its organizers and has her detained. Bond and Quarrel then land secretly on Crab Key, where they encounter Honeychile Rider, an independent young shell collector who has come ashore for valuable specimens.

Bond, Quarrel, and Honey hide among the mangroves while Doctor No's guards search the island. Honey knows Crab Key well but has underestimated the danger posed by its owner. The island's rumored dragon proves to be an armored vehicle equipped with a flame weapon, a machine designed both to terrorize intruders and to preserve the local legend. When the vehicle finds them, Quarrel is killed by its flames. Bond and Honey are captured and taken into Doctor No's installation, leaving them isolated inside a heavily guarded industrial complex with no outside support.

Inside the island complex, Bond and Honey are treated as guests long enough to recover and be prepared for an audience with Doctor No. The elaborate comfort only emphasizes that they are prisoners. No finally receives them and explains his history: after betraying a criminal organization and surviving its attempt to kill him, he rebuilt himself as the ruler of Crab Key, replacing his lost hands with metal pincers and using the guano business as cover and wealth. He has turned the island into a private technical base. His calm hospitality ends with the certainty that neither captive will be allowed to leave.

Doctor No reveals that his equipment interferes with American guided-missile tests conducted nearby and that he is serving Soviet interests. He separates his prisoners and chooses carefully designed deaths for them. Bond is forced through a prolonged obstacle course built into the installation: heat, electrical shocks, dangerous animals, and physical exhaustion are intended to break him before the final hazard. He continues through the course despite severe injuries and survives the confrontation at its end. Emerging outside the controlled route, he reaches the working parts of the guano facility, where he can move among machinery and laborers rather than remain inside No's experiment.

Bond disguises himself within the guano works and reaches the loading machinery. From a crane he turns the industrial process against Doctor No, releasing a mass of guano that buries and kills him. Honey has also survived: No left her to be eaten by crabs, but his assumptions about the animals were wrong and she escaped. Bond finds her and the two seize the armored vehicle that had maintained the island's dragon legend. They drive out through the confused installation, reach the coast, and escape Crab Key. Doctor No's interference with the American missile program is ended, and the murders of Strangways, Trueblood, Quarrel, and the bird wardens can now be explained. Bond returns to Jamaica with Honey alive and No's private empire destroyed.

Bond survives Doctor No's engineered endurance course and escapes into the guano-loading complex. Taking control of a crane, he sends a mass of guano down on Doctor No and buries him. Honey, who had been left to die in a crab-infested area, escapes because the crabs do not attack her as No expected. Bond finds her, and the two flee Crab Key in the armed vehicle used to maintain the island's legend of a dragon. They reach Jamaica and safety. Bond intends to report the destruction of No's base and the truth behind Strangways's disappearance, while also anticipating official displeasure over the disorder left behind. Honey is alive and free, and the threat to the American missile tests has ended with Doctor No's death.
