After Princess Tened poisons him, Hadjar follows her into Ruby Mountain, where he joins Princess Edlet's revolution and survives the Mother Mountain's trials. Tened then takes him to the Ruby Palace, and the Dragon Emperor sends him through the Path Through the Stars. In an ancient-war reconstruction, Hadjar trains with Gevestus, rejects an alluring false family life, and helps destroy an Ifrit coven. His return reveals him as Traves's descendant and a claimant to the Ruby Throne. Boreas advances him and names him Wind of the Northern Valleys, but his duel with the Emperor uncovers Chin'Ameh's manipulation of Traves, the imperial court, and Hadjar's own oath. Hadjar shares the truth, defeats the invading army's leader, and returns to the palace. The wounded Emperor uses Hadjar's hand to end his own life, fulfilling the oath without destroying Hadjar. Tened becomes Empress, and a shadowed figure takes Hadjar to the Demon Lands. Chin'Ameh's childhood memory reveals a mission to eliminate two bloodlines and destroy both original path scrolls.

Previously: Hadjar, known as the Mad General, carried dragon blood, a dragon heart, and the dangerous soul fragment of the First Darkhan. The ancient dragon Traves had taught him to read dragon runes, while Chin'Ameh of the Magic Dawn Pavilion had acted as his protector. Hadjar's wife was pregnant, and the safety of his family depended on his continued advancement and return. His power offered a route forward but also carried the danger that the ancient fragment within him could gain greater influence. Seeking the Path Through the Stars, he accepted an oath-bound assignment to protect Princess Tened, the Dragon Emperor's daughter. The mission placed him inside a dragon delegation and under a magical wreath that enforced obedience and secrecy. These obligations converged as the delegation travelled toward Ruby Mountain, leaving Hadjar responsible for Tened even when the larger purposes of the journey remained concealed from him.

Hadjar awakens badly wounded in Abraham Shensie's camp after the dragon delegation is massacred. Princess Tened, travelling as Gevena Usense, stabbed him with a poisoned dagger and continued toward Ruby Mountain with Tash'Magan. Hadjar cannot explain what happened because Chin'Ameh's wreath enforces secrecy, and his oath still makes Tened's safe return essential to his own life and his family's safety. Abraham, Guy, Gustaf, and Itia shelter him and agree to pose as merchants. At the dwarven border, the young warrior Alba Udun challenges Hadjar to a blood tribute duel. Hadjar fights despite the poison and collapses after wounding Alba. Daglad, one of the last stone trolls, removes the poison and repairs older bodily injuries, though Hadjar's soul wound remains. Alba then joins the travellers as their escort. He identifies himself as a supporter of the Free Mountain Party and reports that Ruby Mountain's leader may be planning to kill the dwarven princess during the coming celebration. Tened and Tash are already ahead, while rumors and songs have made Alba suspect that Hadjar is the Mad General.

The party enters Ruby Mountain and meets Dabladurt, an influential dwarven Eden who knows Abraham and was expecting Hadjar. Dabladurt imprisons Hadjar in stone long enough to enter his soul world and attack the First Darkhan's fragment, but he cannot remove it. He then reveals that Tened and Tash reached the mountain first and are connected to a plot against the dwarven leader. Dabladurt brings the travellers before Princess Edlet and her supporters. Edlet presents evidence that the regime has impoverished artisans, punished dissent, and enslaved opponents' children. Gadat Glad is identified as the ruler the opposition intends to remove, while Dagal Udun is a wealthy supporter of the regime who purchased his warrior status. After Edlet swears to the abuses, Alba joins her cause in exchange for a later formal duel with Dagal. Edlet takes the title General Stonehammer and promises to establish universal laws before holding elections. The rebels plan to ambush the official procession, which will include Gadat Glad, Tened, and the Ruby hero. Hadjar distrusts the manipulation surrounding the revolution but intends to use the operation to recover Tened.

Edlet's force waits in the Emerald Forest, only to find the official procession far better protected than expected. Hadjar warns Alba's hidden warriors against a suicidal assault, then confronts Tash'Magan himself. Tened and Tash discuss the Dragon Emperor's internal purge and the costly deceptions used to sustain it. Tash was once expected to become the first female Ruby hero, supporting Tened's future succession, until Hadjar won the title instead. Hadjar needs to preserve his place in the delegation so he can reach the Emperor's treasury and obtain the Path Through the Stars. He fights Tash using his wind and sword techniques, while Alba's team breaks the ice beneath her and Gustaf strikes her with poison. Her presence disappears in the gorge, and the combatants believe she has died. Gadat Glad orders the rebels executed, but Tened asserts her authority and insists that Hadjar, the true Ruby hero, must remain alive. Gadat imprisons Hadjar and the rebel force in the lower dungeon. The ambush has therefore removed Tash from sight but left Edlet's faction captive under the regime it intended to overthrow.

While imprisoned, Hadjar learns a dwarven legend concerning a black coffin, four sealing nails, and a silver key. His own sword has become similarly black, but the connection remains unexplained. Tened tells him that Chin'Ameh has been arrested and that she kept Hadjar alive because she needs the Path Through the Clouds from him. The wreath lets her order him to finish the delegation, eliminate the dwarven royal family, and obtain the Path Through the Stars. Her faction also plans to exploit the Heart of the Mountain trials. At the festival, Dabladurt uses careful wording to signal that the rebels are ready. Hadjar appears to take Edlet hostage, giving her supporters access to the ceremonial key and triggering the coup. Abraham's group joins the rebels, Dabladurt turns the mountain's stone against Gadat Glad, and Edlet beheads the ruler. Tash then reappears alive in dragon form and attacks. Itia gets the key to Hadjar, who opens the gate while carrying the disabled Tened. Edlet, Alba, Dabladurt, Dagal, Abraham, Guy, Itia, and others are drawn inside with them, while Gustaf alone remains outside. Elsewhere, the ancient mage Ash discusses signs of renewed war.

Inside the Heart of the Mountain, all entrants are reduced to mortal condition and warned that violence will kill everyone. Tash cannot attack Hadjar, and Alba postpones his fight with Dagal. Hadjar accepts sole responsibility for the Mother Mountain's three trials because the whole party depends on him. The Mountain first shows him a future in which he becomes an oppressive ruler. He rejects the throne and the preservation of his own power. A second judgment forces him to confront wrongdoing, necessity, and his refusal to excuse his own failures. A legendary dwarven blacksmith then explains that the trials are gifts paid for by the Mountain. The smith forges Hadjar an iron heart that can revive him if his dragon heart stops. Hadjar returns with little memory of the encounters, and the temple opens. The immediate revolution has succeeded, but its surviving factions separate at the exit. Abraham and Dabladurt remain behind, while Alba prepares to face Dagal. Tened uses Chin'Ameh's magic to immobilize Hadjar and takes him and the unconscious Tash to the Ruby Palace. At the same time, the prince of demons orders Helmer to deliver Hadjar within a mortal month.

At the Ruby Palace, Hadjar's old wreath disappears only for stronger spells to imprison him. The Dragon Emperor inspects him, then gives him the Path Through the Stars token because the technique can later be extracted from him. The token draws Hadjar onto a hidden road where an ancient figure calls him the Fourth General and sends him into an inheritance trial. Hadjar arrives in a reconstruction of the ancient war against the Black General. He joins the first Dragon Emperor's eastern army, receives the same black blade he carries in the present, and fights despite severe limits on his use of World River energy. An unnamed minotaur helps him seize an enemy intelligence bracelet and dies protecting him. Hadjar forces his way to imperial headquarters, where a younger Traves initially defeats him. Evidence that Hadjar follows the Path Through the Stars wins the first Emperor's provisional trust. The bracelet reveals an imminent Ifrit fire-wall attack. Gevestus, a half-blood dragon commander and exceptional swordsman, volunteers to locate the hidden coven. He judges Hadjar's wind capable of finding it and departs with him on a three-hour mission before the eastern front must retreat.

Gevestus reveals that he is the first Dragon Emperor's maternal half-brother and Traves's future master. His dragon mother and adoptive merchant family were killed, the latter during a raid led by Ash, yet Ash inexplicably spared him. After Hadjar assures Gevestus that his future life ends with dignity, Gevestus agrees to train him. Hadjar cannot bear the wind's full name, but he begins learning what is needed for the mission. They ascend through the Path Through the Clouds to a Keeper, who sends Hadjar into the Path Through the Stars trial. He awakens in a peaceful vision with his wife and daughter, years removed from war and cultivation. When armed deserters threaten the village, Hadjar and his wife reveal their power to protect the residents. They prepare to abandon cultivation completely, but a black-armored warrior challenges Hadjar's retreat from duty. Hadjar cannot name his supposed daughter and recognizes the life as a mirage. He rejects peace purchased by ignoring the strong harming the weak, accepts his own inner darkness, and chooses his own light as his path. He returns having comprehended the first step of the Path Through the Stars, though the Keeper will not say whether the family vision was illusion or future.

Gevestus explains that Hadjar has gained only the first step of the Path Through the Stars and still needs the scroll for further progress. Using a senior expression of the wind, Hadjar locates the hidden Ifrit coven, though its members detect and burn him from afar. He and Gevestus attack the hill together. Hadjar destroys one Ifrit by combining his sword with will and kingdom, while Gevestus faces the remaining spirits alone. The survivors merge into a much stronger fire entity and nearly overwhelm them. Hadjar turns the wind into a sword within the fused enemy and destroys it in a vast explosion. Gevestus survives with grave injuries, but Hadjar vanishes from the ancient reconstruction and returns unconscious to the Ruby Palace. Chin'Ameh intervenes before the court can execute him and exposes the Dark Storm coat of arms on Hadjar's body. This identifies Hadjar as Traves's descendant and the last of that bloodline, giving him a claim equal to the Dragon Emperor's. Ancestral law now requires Hadjar and the Emperor to duel at sunset on the seventh day, with the Ruby Throne itself at stake.

Hadjar recovers under Chin'Ameh's care and visits the ruined valley where Traves lived. The Dragon Emperor reveals that Traves could have escaped his prison and therefore chose Hadjar deliberately. Chin'Ameh prepares Hadjar for the duel with a concealed Sanctuary of Power and a large supply of cultivation diamonds. He insists that the Path Through the Stars belongs to Hadjar because Hadjar passed its trial, while Tened secretly promises to kill Chin'Ameh after the duel. During meditation, Hadjar reaches the realm of his wind and challenges Boreas. The North Wind overwhelms him and destroys his dragon manifestation, but Hadjar refuses to submit and cracks Boreas's ancient sword. Boreas heals him, changes his mark, and grants him the name Hadjar Darkhan, Wind of the Northern Valleys. Hadjar reaches the nameless level but has little time to master the new power before facing the peak Heaven Emperor. Chin'Ameh prepares the ancestral arena for their blood duel. Beyond the Dragon Lands, the commander of the Seven Empires force is already leading a vast human army toward Ruby Mountain, creating a second approaching conflict.

Hadjar enters the ancestral arena with incomplete control of his new level. His attacks surprise the Dragon Emperor but cannot initially wound him. The Emperor's paired star-level weapon breaks Hadjar's defenses and cuts a meridian, while the wind sustains Hadjar long enough for him to continue. Hadjar accepts the First Darkhan's Wind Warrior inheritance, gaining a second, soul-bound blade. When he finally creates an opening, the Emperor's regret makes him hesitate. The First Darkhan's pressure then drives Hadjar through buried memories concerning his identity, his former companions, and the history of Traves. The memories establish that Traves and the Dragon Emperor were blood brothers. They also show Minister Ju and an imperial general acting under mental control during the events used to condemn the Dark Storm tribe. Chin'Ameh is revealed as the architect. He manipulated the evidence, destroyed Traves's family, and implanted commands so that a future descendant inheriting Traves's heart would be compelled to kill the Emperor. Hadjar realizes that Traves's demand was not freely given. He tears the controlling clot and ribbon from his chest, rejecting both the planted order and the corrupting pressure on his identity.

Hadjar shows the controlling ribbon and the recovered memories to the Dragon Emperor. The Emperor accepts that Chin'Ameh engineered the conflict and attacks him, while Tened and Tash'Magan also recognize the deception. Hadjar leaves them to confront the approaching Seven Empires army. He kills the army's leader with a strike to the heart, preserves the last king's spirit, and transmits the conspiracy memories to those who came seeking justice. He then returns to the Ruby Palace, where the Dragon Emperor has been mortally wounded in his fight with Chin'Ameh. The Emperor guides Hadjar's hand in cutting his throat, satisfying the compelled oath while allowing Hadjar to survive. Tened receives the ruler's mark and becomes Empress. A shadowed figure immediately takes Hadjar to the Demon Lands. The final memory turns to Chin'Ameh's childhood as the last child of the Magic Dawn tribe. A shadow claiming ancestral authority convinces him that he must eliminate both tribes' surviving relatives, erase the original scroll for each Path, and ultimately sacrifice his own life. Chin'Ameh's fate after the imperial battle remains unknown.

Hadjar's duel with the Dragon Emperor exposes memories proving that Chin'Ameh manufactured the conflict between the Emperor and Traves. Minister Ju and other officials acted under mental control, Traves's family was deliberately destroyed, and the command to kill the Emperor was planted so that a future descendant would carry it out. The Emperor turns on Chin'Ameh while Hadjar confronts the Seven Empires force, kills its leader, preserves the last king's spirit, and shares the conspiracy memories with the invaders. Mortally wounded after fighting Chin'Ameh, the Emperor guides Hadjar's hand to his throat. This satisfies Hadjar's compelled oath while allowing him to live. Tened receives the ruler's mark and becomes Empress, with Tash'Magan surviving beside her. A shadowed figure immediately transports Hadjar to the Demon Lands. His wife and unborn child remain unrecovered, later stages of the Path Through the Stars remain unfinished, the First Darkhan still threatens his identity, and the demon prince's summons is unresolved. Chin'Ameh's fate is not established. A final childhood memory shows him accepting an unverified shadow's command to destroy the related Thundercloud and Magic Dawn bloodlines, both original path scrolls, and eventually himself.
