In short (whole book)

Laskan invades as Hadjar is sent into Karnak to secure an ancient tomb before Derek. Separated from his companions, Hadjar is rescued by Annette and learns that his soul was divided at birth. In the tomb, Derek gains the Word of the Dead while Hadjar receives a dragon legacy. Derek later takes a leaf from the destroyed Tree of Life, enslaves Galkad, and raises an undead army. A renegade alchemist strips Hadjar's true name, but Einen's hidden counter-plan kills the alchemist and sends Hadjar into the spirit world. Hadjar reconciles with his other soul half, breaks the sword mark, and returns with his own blue wind sword power. Annette helps him kill Derek, ending the undead assault. Galkad dies after being freed, while the surviving companions mourn him. Laskan's war continues, Dragonlands begins hunting a hidden rootless dragon, and Hadjar still faces the First Darkhan and unpaid spirit-world obligations.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Hadjar Darkhan was the Mad General of the Moon Army and the brother of Queen Elaine. His former command tied him closely to the soldiers and people of their northern homeland even after his path carried him elsewhere. He became the disciple of the legendary swordsman Orune, whose fate became entangled with crimes attributed to Hadjar. Derek of the Steppe was once Hadjar's foe and retained a personal grievance against him. Hadjar also entered obligations with Helmer and with powers beyond the ordinary human world. Most dangerously, a hostile fragment of the First Darkhan remained bound to Hadjar's blood and soul. His strength as an imperial swordsman therefore came with divided loyalties, unsettled debts, and an internal danger he had not overcome. These unresolved ties follow him into a new imperial war, while his former homeland and the people closest to him remain vulnerable to enemies who can use them against him.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

War opens with Laskan after a border ship sacrifices itself to send a warning. Elaine's northern realm loses its independence but becomes an imperial barony after an officer kills its abusive governor. Hadjar wakes to learn that Derek has destroyed Fort Daragon and joined the invasion as a Laskan great hero. At the imperial council, Hadjar's newly awakened sword kingdom is recognized as powerful but unstable. Intelligence suggests Derek is moving toward either a dragon noble's tomb in Karnak or the Tree of Life beneath Hadjar's homeland. Morgan assigns Hadjar to lead a small expedition to secure the tomb, with the Tree as a secondary objective. The merchant-house heir joins because of prior research, while Hadjar seeks answers about Derek's transformation. Freya identifies the God of War's priests as its source and confirms Hadjar's blood connection to the First Darkhan. Hadjar then gathers Einen, Dora, Tom, Galkad, and the rest of his party for the lethal Karnak crossing.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

A hidden alchemist marks Hadjar as the final soul-name needed for the Hundred Voices Pill and places an infiltrator on the expedition. Before the party reaches Karnak, Derek and a cloud-wielding Laskan hero intercept its airship. Hadjar leaves the vessel alone, uses explosives against the enemy squadron, and confronts Derek. A black-cloaked manifestation then unleashes catastrophic darkness, destroying the Laskan ships and crippling Hadjar's own. Hadjar falls into the jungle, gravely injured and separated from his companions. Annette finds him in a lake and brings him to her isolated tribe, whose Nature Speaker can treat his body but cannot easily repair his damaged soul. The tribe knows neither the empire's present geography nor its cultivation system and regards old imperial claims as oppression. Its leaders refuse Hadjar access to the ancient tomb, offering only assimilation or death while his companions remain missing.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Hadjar remains under guard but earns the tribe's respect during a demon attack. Fighting beside its warriors, he combines his sword kingdom with the Quetzal and defeats a four-winged demon. He asks for access to the tribe's knowledge as his reward. The Nature Speaker objects because he is an outsider, but the Keeper of the Past rejects that reasoning and approves Annette as his initiation guide. The Mountain of Elements rite may reveal Hadjar's natural name, though surrendering to its temptations could trap him. The trial draws him into memories of his former life and his relationship with Helen, a musician and close companion. He relives fabricated evidence used against her, the proof that she was blackmailed, and her love for him. The vision ends with Helen fatally wounded during a robbery. After her death, Hadjar yields to pressure to continue her public career through substitutes. As he confronts that choice, a black-cloaked figure tied to his oldest memories accuses him of forgetting Helen and himself.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

The initiation forces Hadjar to relive Helen's death and his own coerced complicity in preserving her commercial identity after she was gone. A black-cloaked figure then confronts him with half of his own face, accusing him of abandoning his rage and accepting alien power. Their fight reveals that the opponent is a separated part of Hadjar. Hadjar survives, raises his sword domain to county level, and damages the mark governing his power. The Keeper explains that Hadjar's soul was divided at birth and that the poison within him was designed to consume one part while containing the dangerous captive bound to him. Normal advancement will not save him. He must reunite with his other half in the spirit world, even though destroying the sword mark may cost his current strength. The Keeper supplies a map and directs Hadjar to take Annette to the tomb. Hadjar leaves the tribe with a soul-burning dagger and responsibility for Annette's return.

Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)

Hadjar and Annette reunite with the battered expedition, discovering that an imperial princess secretly joined it to recover knowledge from the tomb. Her Guard Corps protector distrusts the situation, while Annette proves essential when an elemental attacks the camp. Annette uses necromancy to destroy it and erect a lethal protective veil, though drawing power through Hadjar worsens his soul wounds. The party reaches the tomb, an ancient pyramid isolated by a deadly swamp. Derek is nearby, but the lake's chimeras delay his force. Inside, the expedition is weakened by suppressive pressure and lethal traps. Hadjar reads dragon writing and recognizes imagery that makes the tomb's origin uncertain. At a narrow passage the group divides. Hadjar enters with Annette, the princess, and another fighter, while Einen, Galkad, and the others hold off the chimeras. A turquoise-clad shadow receives them and recognizes Hadjar as the last of the Dark Storm tribe.

Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)

The tomb's guardian is the surviving shadow of a dragon emperor. It confirms Hadjar's dragon blood, identifies the First Darkhan as an enemy, and reveals that powerful beings have shaped both Hadjar and Annette. Hadjar is forced through a timed solo trial, survives guardians and illusions, and finds Derek deeper in the complex. Derek reveals his plan to combine death magic with the Tree of Life and turn Hadjar's homeland into an empire of the dead. In the treasure chamber, the supposed Book of the Immortals proves to be the Blade of the Dead Soul. Its trial asks Hadjar to kill an innocent child for a possible future crime. Hadjar refuses, so the blade judges him unable to command the dead and gives Derek the Word of the Dead. The dragon shadow rewards Hadjar's choice by placing a broken horn in his heart. As the tomb sinks, Hadjar returns to his companions only to find a hostile tribe surrounding them and demanding Annette.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

Hadjar's expedition fights its way out of the tribal encirclement, with Einen transporting the survivors through shadow. Annette learns that her adoptive tribe has been destroyed and explains that she is the last Shuk Arca survivor. She received the Word of the Dead from the same tomb as a child, making her the only known counter to Derek's ritual. The group concludes that Derek is heading for the old royal capital and its Tree of Life. To pursue him, Hadjar leads a raid on a Laskan camp holding four skyships. He draws thousands of soldiers away while his companions capture one vessel and destroy the others. The escape succeeds, but Derek's will reaches the departing ship and tears Galkad away. Hadjar prevents Galkad's lover from following him into the wreckage. The party leaves Karnak with transport and a route home, but Derek retains both his death magic and a captive he can torture or turn against them.

Story so far - through chapter 87 (this book)

Hadjar returns openly to the Moon Army, secretly visits the pregnant Elaine, and reaches the Tree of Life beneath the ruins of his homeland. When Derek arrives, Hadjar orders the assembled fleet to bombard the site rather than surrender the Tree. The Tree and ruins are destroyed, but Derek escapes with a scarlet leaf and uses it to raise an enormous undead army. Galkad has been tortured into an enslaved weapon. Hadjar is then captured by his former mentor, the hidden alchemist behind the Hundred Voices Pill. The ritual strips Hadjar's true name and nearly destroys his soul. Einen appears to assist, but his betrayal is a deception planned through his brotherhood oath with Hadjar. Einen substitutes another pill, collapses the alchemist's power, and kills him. Hadjar takes the completed pill and enters the spirit world with only three days before his body fails, while his allies and the Fifth Legion prepare to hold back Derek.

Story so far - through chapter 94 (this book)

The Fifth Legion's greatest attacks barely slow Derek's dead, and fresh casualties rise against their former comrades. In the spirit world, Hadjar follows a flower spirit to an old woman whose hospitality is governed by binding rules. Her bath heals his wounds, but accepting her help creates obligations. Hadjar promises to tell her a future story and repairs her house in exchange for guidance. She gives him clothing meant to heal his damaged soul and orders him north, through every apparent obstacle. Only after leaving does Hadjar learn that his host was the Winter Court queen and that an older debt to her court may also remain. Following her instructions, he continues north toward the lute-playing elder and the missing half of his soul.

Story so far - through chapter 104 (this book)

Derek breaches the Fifth Legion's defenses. Tom and Karine cannot harm him, while Galkad attacks the living under Derek's control and his lover refuses to abandon him. In the spirit world, Hadjar confronts both the First Darkhan and his rage-bearing other half. Their duel moves through memories of abuse, retaliation, friendship, and survival. Hadjar rejects hatred as the sole truth of his life, recognizes Darkhan as North Wind, and reconciles with the counterpart he once suppressed. Together they break the sword mark. After decades of subjective training with Orune, Hadjar returns to save Einen and Dora, now wielding a blue wind sword power that belongs to him. He destroys much of the undead host and overwhelms Derek's defenses. Annette arrives with a bone bow and strikes Derek through the chest. Derek dies after asking forgiveness, and the undead army, ghost ships, and storm vanish. A red-haired Laskan great hero retrieves his body, spares Hadjar, and declares that the wider war will continue.

Story so far - through chapter 107 (this book)

Derek's defeat ends the undead siege but not its losses. Freed from the dead energy, Galkad is too badly damaged to survive. He learns that the living won, says farewell to his lover and companions, and dies. His pregnant lover lights his funeral pyre while Hadjar, Einen, Dora, Karine, Tom, and Annette mourn him. Hadjar postpones an imperial summons to remain for the funeral. Morgan recognizes that the red-haired Laskan hero deliberately spared Hadjar and that Hadjar has not yet reached the foremost great heroes. The war therefore remains open. At the Dragonlands court, the emperor orders the Magic Dawn Pavilion head and a minister back to the human empire to recover a hidden rootless dragon alive, threatening the empire that shelters the fugitive. Elsewhere, the last Stepwolf survivor seeks orc hunters for revenge against the human empires. Hadjar survives with his restored power, but the First Darkhan, imperial politics, spirit-world debts, Laskan, and Dragonlands all remain active threats.

How does it end? (ending)

Hadjar returns from the spirit world after reconciling with his divided self, breaking the alien sword mark, and training with Orune during decades of subjective time. He and Annette kill Derek, causing the undead army, ghost fleet, and storm to vanish. Galkad is released from Derek's control but dies from the damage inflicted during his captivity. Hadjar, Einen, Dora, Karine, Tom, and Annette survive and gather for Galkad's funeral, where his pregnant lover lights the pyre. Elaine remains concealed and pregnant. The Tree of Life and its ruins are gone, but the wider war with Laskan continues, and its senior heroes still surpass Hadjar. Morgan's manipulation of the war leaves Hadjar's imperial position uncertain. The First Darkhan remains a threat within his unresolved soul, while obligations to the Winter Court queen and the flower spirit remain open. Dragonlands sends agents to recover a hidden rootless dragon, and the last Stepwolf survivor seeks orc support for revenge against the human empires.
