In short (whole book)
Hadjar and Nero build an elite unit, survive Larvie's attempt to kill them, and are drawn into a northern war. After Leen dies in a duel, Hadjar takes command, absorbs enemy defectors, captures a border city, and turns the army against Black Gates. He sacrifices an immortal inheritance to save the poisoned Nero, allies with mountain villagers, survives a vast beast migration, and commits himself permanently to the sword spirit. The Moon Army defeats Black Gates at Black Gorge, breaks the Snake Gates, and reaches the patriarch's stronghold. Hadjar kills the patriarch with help from the Neuronet, which then shuts down for years. The victory leaves the army shattered. The island witch departs after revealing her wolf form, Nero becomes Hadjar's blood brother, and Leon inherits command. Badly wounded and carrying an unopened spatial ring, Hadjar leaves with Nero, Serra, and Azrea for the capital, where Primus's court and Elaine's birthday summons await.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Hadjar survived the destruction of his royal family and lived under a concealed identity after his uncle Primus seized the throne of Lidus from Haver. The deeper cause of the conflict within the royal family remained unknown. Hadjar endured enslavement and later became a soldier, forming close bonds with the swordsman Nero and the caster Serra. His actions at Blue Wind Ridge earned him a reputation strong enough to draw other fighters to his banner. He also came into the care of Azrea, a white tiger cub, and carried a dragon heart whose residual guardian, Traves, subjected him to a larger path of tests and obligations. By the opening of this volume, Hadjar's public military rise offered a possible route back toward the palace, but it also placed him within reach of enemies connected to both the army and his hidden past.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
So far this book: Hadjar and Nero train a thousand chosen recruits for the northern campaign, with Serra supporting the unit. An Ax Clan assassin reaches their camp and nearly kills Hadjar, but he defeats her and receives her speed-training scroll before her death. Hadjar also gains Moonbeam, a spirit-level sword. He, Nero, and Serra then plan a covert attack on Larvie, whose castle is tied to the assassination effort. Leen quietly provides an alibi while the trio uses a festival as cover. Inside the castle, Larvie completes an unnatural breakthrough with a scarlet stone and overwhelms Hadjar and Nero. Time stops when the Lord of Nightmares appears, identifies the stone as his demon heart, kills Larvie, and takes it. The overwhelmingly powerful being spares Hadjar and predicts that they will meet again. Hadjar and Nero escape as the castle collapses, but the encounter disables the Neuronet for four days and leaves Hadjar marked for an unknown future meeting.
Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)
Royal investigators pursue Larvie's death and begin abusing Hadjar's soldiers. Hadjar accepts fifty lashes in place of five men, then kills the responsible investigator in a lawful duel. A former Palace Guard leader recognizes him as the surviving prince, admits that Primus forced his part in the coup by threatening his family, and dies before explaining the old conflict involving Haver. Hadjar's unit grows dramatically before the northern march. At the border, Leen rejects surrender and faces her former fellow student and lover Darren in a customary duel. Darren mortally wounds her, and she gives Hadjar her general's medallion before dying. Hadjar immediately challenges Darren. During their fight he reaches one-with-the-world swordsmanship, defeats Darren, and receives the army's acclaim as its new general. The victory gives Hadjar the command he sought, but leaves him badly wounded as he inherits responsibility for Leen's soldiers.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Headquarters tries to replace Hadjar with an unqualified appointee, but the assembled army and commanders such as Leon defend his right to lead. Hadjar then accepts 200,000 enemy defectors who oppose their kingdom's enslavement and alliance with Black Gates. To solve his army's supply crisis, he crosses the border and uses leaflets, spies, and a coordinated uprising to seize a fortified city. He forbids indiscriminate looting and punishes soldiers who disobey, though sabotage continues after the capture. Hadjar declines to turn the campaign into a conquest of the neighboring capital. Instead, he announces that the enlarged Moon Army will destroy Black Gates. As the army approaches the sect's mountain pavilions, a Black Gates envoy arrives riding Stefa, a former circus ally who once aided Hadjar during his enslavement. She has been mutilated into an unresponsive human mount. After the envoy initiates violence, Hadjar kills him and ends Stefa's suffering. The act makes open war with the sect unavoidable and gives the campaign a deeply personal cost.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
Hadjar prepares to seize the sixth Black Gates pavilion as a winter base. Simon solves a shortage of artillery crews by organizing ordinary recruits as gunners, while Serra builds a magical deception that draws the defenders toward their barrier. Ten thousand elite soldiers enter through the opening. During the assault, a pavilion master wounds Nero with a black halberd before Hadjar defeats him. The dying master summons an ancient tiger-like Defender, but Azrea confronts the creature and causes it to withdraw. The pavilion falls and Serra converts its barrier for the Moon Army, yet Nero's wound develops into a spreading black affliction. No healer or ordinary antidote can stop it. An imperial librarian identifies the attack as a patriarchal Black Gates technique and says that only a black stone flower can save Nero. The flower lies inside an ancient immortal's tomb that admits only young practitioners below the true-cultivator level. With Nero expected to die within days, Hadjar leaves his army and enters the mountains alone to find the cure.
Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)
Hadjar locates the buried immortal tomb and rejects an illusion in which his lost family lives, choosing Nero's rescue over the false reunion. He survives trials of will and endurance, then earns the right to choose between the dead swordsman's inheritance and the black stone flower. Hadjar takes the flower without hesitation. The tomb spirit rewards that choice with a subjective year of sword instruction compressed into one outside hour. Hadjar improves his fundamental skill and advances within the Formation stage, but again refuses to abandon Nero for the inheritance. After Hadjar departs, the spirit destroys the tomb and ends its own remnant existence. Elsewhere, Elaine seeks a portrait of General Hadjar and feels that she recognizes something in him, while Primus continues torturing the former royal nanny for the founder's sword. Hadjar returns in time. A healer processes the flower, removes the parasitic creature spreading through Nero's wound, and restores him to consciousness. Nero survives, though he still faces a long recovery.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
With the sixth pavilion secured, Hadjar learns that the mountain villages expect a massive beast migration. He visits their defended settlement with trusted officers and meets Darius, who also warns him of an incurable black-fog disease associated with Black Gates. Darius sends Hadjar to an island-born witch who lives among wolves. She detects Azrea's scent and something deeper and unfamiliar within Hadjar. The witch then deceives him into believing he has been poisoned, using that fear to transfer his consciousness into a beast. Through the creature, Hadjar witnesses the approaching horde and its terror of a struggle between far stronger beasts. He returns to his own body weakened but convinced by what he witnessed. The invasion is real, and the Moon Army and neighboring settlements stand in its path.
Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)
Hadjar accepts the reality of the invasion but remains angry that the island witch risked his life to prove it. He promises Darius that the Moon Army will help defend the village in exchange for stored provisions, giving the army a food supply and the villagers a powerful ally. Darius estimates that the horde may arrive within two months. During Hadjar's recovery, he and the witch become lovers, though neither promises to abandon their own people or path. A Black Gates and Ax Clan assassin then attacks Hadjar to avenge a brother killed at the sixth pavilion. The stronger fighter wounds him repeatedly and escapes, leaving the threat unresolved. While recovering from the duel, Hadjar meditates at the local war-god statue and regains the sense of freedom he lost at Blue Wind Ridge. He advances into the Transformation stage and manifests a short-range sword cut driven by intention. Hadjar is stronger when he returns to command, but the assassin remains loose and the beast invasion is still approaching.
Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)
Hadjar's five hundred hunters kill ice bears and several white-ape groups while gathering cores for the planned fortress. The expedition culminates in an avalanche assault against hundreds of apes led by a gigantic fourth-stage alpha. Hadjar learns to redirect the creature's own force through his Calm Wind stance and kills it, though he suffers a serious leg wound. The mission costs twenty hunters in total and yields almost four hundred white-ape cores. The survivors give Hadjar the battlefield name Dragon. When the group returns, the escaped sect-clan assassin is holding the island witch as a hostage. She has deliberately allowed the situation to bring the assassin within Hadjar's reach. Hadjar attacks, and both men fall from a cliff. Hadjar survives and the assassin dies, ending the immediate vendetta. The witch and Hadjar renew their intimacy, while the army now possesses the cores needed to build its main defense against the approaching beast horde.
Story so far - through chapter 85 (this book)
Over two months, the Moon Army turns the sixth pavilion into an ice fortress with artillery, layered walls, and shelters for the neighboring population. The beast horde arrives on an almost unmanageable scale, including thousands of alpha creatures and two beings too strong for the Neuronet to assess. Hadjar closes the gate while civilians are still outside and directs the defense. A flying beast destroys his tower and leaves him beyond the walls. Nero joins him, and the two hold the approach until Azrea transforms from a kitten into a giant white tigress and carries them back to safety. As the walls fail, Serra gathers the survivors beneath her barrier and unleashes fire and lightning that drive most of the horde onward. The army survives, but the region and its settlements are devastated. The island witch explains that Azrea's rescue consumed the reserve stored in her mother's core, so the transformation cannot presently be repeated. Black Gates has meanwhile abandoned its outer pavilions and concentrated at its central stronghold. With the Moon Army badly depleted, Hadjar calls a war council to decide the final campaign.
Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)
On the eve of the Black Gates campaign, Hadjar enters Traves's inner realm and faces the second of four tests attached to the dragon heart. Traves tests his mind through a chess-like battle. Hadjar succeeds by treating the pieces as soldiers whose lives place a duty on their commander. Offered a new technique, he chooses an irreversible path devoted entirely to the sword spirit, surrendering every other possible cultivation direction. Traves warns that two more dangerous tests remain and that the eventual price of the dragon heart is still concealed. In the river of world energy, the sword spirit strips away Hadjar's memories and repeatedly rejects him. He reconstructs his identity through sheer persistence and takes a single step toward it. The result expands his sword energy far beyond its former range and leaves a silver pattern of blades across his back. The island witch recognizes that the spirit has accepted and permanently changed him. Hadjar enters the coming war stronger, but bound to a path from which he cannot turn aside.
Story so far - through chapter 96 (this book)
Black Gates threatens the residents of Black Gorge to force Hadjar into a trap. He enters the gorge alone while the Moon Army hides nearby, then attacks during the negotiation and signals the wider assault. The sect deploys a colossal bull carrying a fortified platform as its decisive weapon. Hadjar and Nero climb the beast, seize its fortification, and use explosives and sword strikes to destroy its eye and brain. With the bull dead, Hadjar faces the First Pavilion master. The master's wolf-shaped techniques cannot overcome Hadjar's new speed and sword energy, and Hadjar kills him before his final attack lands. The Moon Army wins at Black Gorge. Nero has fought beside Hadjar throughout the decisive action, while Leon, the cavalry, and the archers help contain the sect's strongest forces. The victory removes Black Gates' field commander and greatest beast weapon, but the sect's fortified entrance and patriarch remain ahead.
Story so far - through chapter 100 (this book)
Hadjar, Nero, and Serra reconnoiter the Snake Gates and find immense walls protected by golems, rotating sickles, chained fire serpents, and aerial forces. Before the assault, Hadjar and Nero seal their friendship as blood brothers. Conventional attacks fail with heavy losses, so the island witch controls flocks of birds while Serra turns them into explosive distractions against the wyverns and walls. Adapted catapults launch Hadjar and Nero onto the parapet. They exploit the gate's own spinning blades to expose and destroy the golems' cores, plant charges on the sickle mechanisms, and leap to canvases held by soldiers below. The collapsing weapons smash the gates and bury the fire serpents. The Moon Army enters Black Gates territory through the breach. The central sect complex and its patriarch still stand, but the defensive structure thought to be impregnable has fallen.
Story so far - through chapter 108 (this book)
Inside Black Gates, Hadjar kills two elite fighters while the allied forces break the remaining defenses. The sect releases a vast cloud of decay, and the cavalry commander leads tens of thousands into it, combining their strength to hold it back. He dies after saving the army. Hadjar then enters the patriarch's underground laboratory alone. A visiting Knight of Spirit departs with containers of epidemic black smoke after discussing the patriarch's forbidden work, including a pill made from one hundred thousand souls. The patriarch badly outmatches Hadjar and nearly kills him with inherited sickles and armed dead spirits. Hadjar breaks the artifact and wounds him, but survives the final exchange only by accepting the Neuronet forecast module's control. He kills the patriarch, and the Neuronet then shuts down for a projected 1,754 days. Hadjar takes an unfamiliar ring and leaves the cave gravely wounded. Black Gates is destroyed, its leader is dead, and Hadjar has survived the campaign, but the cost to both him and the Moon Army is immense.
Story so far - through chapter 111 (this book)
In the aftermath, survivors rebuild the devastated valley and bury the dead. The island witch reveals that she is a white horned wolf from the islands. She and Hadjar accept that neither wants a shared domestic life, and they part on separate paths. Hadjar decides that his service as a general is over. A royal order summons him to the capital for Elaine's birthday and grants him a baronial title that effectively removes him from command. Nero declines the chance to inherit the army and chooses to accompany him. As the forces leave the mountains, the allied contingent returns home and fewer than 600,000 Moon Army soldiers continue. Hadjar seals a sword and spear in the border gorge as a memorial. Serra identifies the patriarch's ring as a spatial artifact, but no one can open it. Hadjar gives the general's medallion to Leon, making her commander of the Moon Army. Still badly wounded, he departs for the capital with Nero, Serra, Azrea, and Ralphie. He expects the royal summons to place him in political danger, while Traves's remaining tests, the Lord of Nightmares' interest, and the ring all remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
Black Gates is destroyed after Hadjar kills its patriarch, but the Moon Army pays for victory with immense losses. The cavalry commander dies stopping the sect's decay cloud. Hadjar survives gravely wounded, and the Neuronet functions that guided his final exchange will be unavailable for an estimated 1,754 days. He carries the patriarch's spatial ring but cannot open it. The island witch reveals herself as a white horned wolf, parts from Hadjar, and follows her own path. Nero, now Hadjar's blood brother, remains with Serra and chooses the capital over inheriting command. Hadjar accepts the end of his generalship and gives Leen's medallion to Leon, who leads fewer than 600,000 remaining Moon Army soldiers. Hadjar, Nero, Serra, Azrea, and the general staff messenger travel toward the capital under an order tied to Elaine's birthday and Hadjar's baronial retirement. Hadjar expects political danger from the summons. His hidden royal identity, Primus's rule, the unopened ring, the Lord of Nightmares' interest, and the two remaining tests and eventual price demanded by Traves all remain unresolved.
