Hadjar returns covertly to the Lidus capital, confronts Primus's oppressive rule, and learns that Nero is Crown Prince Aaron while Elaine is his own lost sister. A royal hunt leads Hadjar and Elaine to an ancient tree, where Elaine inherits the ancestral sword. After witnessing the mines' violence, she begins questioning the kingdom she knows. Hadjar infiltrates the northern rebels, hears Atticus's account of the coup and a demonic disaster, then kills him in a duel. Primus recognizes Hadjar and sentences him to burn, but the people and Moon Army rise in his defense. The Darnassus governor kills Nero, and Serra destroys the governor at the cost of her life. Hadjar kills Primus, restores Elaine's memories, and lets the world believe he dies so she can rule. Azrea rescues him. Elaine becomes queen and begins reforms, while Hadjar leaves with Azrea to seek the gods' realm.

Previously: Hadjar, the surviving son of the deposed King Haver, became a renowned general while concealing his royal identity. Primus, Hadjar's uncle, rules Lidus after the fall of Hadjar's family, and Darnassus holds decisive influence over the kingdom. Hadjar's path through war brought him close comrades, especially Nero and Serra, and made the Moon Army loyal to him. General Leen served as one of its senior commanders. Hadjar also gained Azrea, a young white tiger who travels as his companion. His victory over the Black Gates increased his fame but left his body and forming core badly strained. He now returns to the Lidus capital with his companions, carrying both a soldier's reputation and an unresolved claim against the ruler who replaced his father.

So far this book: Hadjar, Nero, Serra, and Ralphie enter the Lidus capital for Princess Elaine's birthday. Hadjar hides his former status as prince, but his fame as the victorious General Traves quickly draws attention. Still recovering from his Black Gates injuries, he defeats a hostile noble without relying fully on Moonbeam. Rowena then exposes his identity as the celebrated general to the tavern crowd. A walk through the poorer district brings Hadjar into conflict with a masked swordswoman after he refuses to intervene against abusive royal guards. Their clash, and Hadjar's own reflections, force him to confront how deeply war has exhausted his willingness to protect strangers. Playing music at the tavern restores some of his sense of purpose. Rowena then escorts Hadjar, Nero, and Serra across the capital. The sight of the palace after sixteen years leaves Hadjar preparing to enter the place bound to his family's overthrow.

So far this book: At court, Hadjar faces Primus while maintaining a false account of his origins. Elaine's arrival interrupts their veiled confrontation. Hadjar recognizes the princess as his lost younger sister, although she does not recognize him, and he keeps silent to protect her. Elaine's horse carries her into a newly opened abyss, and Hadjar leaps after her while Nero is trapped above. The hunt's rivalry has now become a survival crisis, with Hadjar and Elaine missing beneath the mountain and the rest of the party unable to follow.

The pair follow a submerged route out, battle a huge fish guarding the passage, and save one another from death before reaching impossibly ancient ruins. A powerful tree of life separates them into trials linked to an ancestral weapon. Hadjar gains a deeper understanding of his sword path but fails the tree's intended test because he continues seeking victory rather than accepting defeat and renouncing rule. Elaine succeeds in her own trial and receives the ancestral white sword, which is bound to her bloodline and can rest as a mark on her hand. The tree gives Hadjar a red leaf and an obscure warning about his eventual death. Hadjar intends to hide the tree and the valuable resources around it from the wider world.

When mine troops raid the village, Elaine and Hadjar defeat them, but a dying soldier detonates an artifact that destroys the settlement. Hadjar saves Elaine while allowing the villagers to die, arguing that he cannot rescue people who will not act for themselves. Their moral divide remains unresolved. Nero and the search party finally arrive. Elaine executes the noble who had endangered servants during the earlier duel, then orders everyone back to the capital so she can confront Primus about the mine and the suffering concealed from her.

So far this book: On returning to the capital, Elaine admits responsibility for the noble's execution. Primus kills Duke Boreas when he seeks revenge and notices the mark of Elaine's ancestral sword. Hadjar remains under close watch, but he and Nero survive an attack by assassins connected to the dead duke. Nero and Serra marry with Hadjar as best man. During their wedding, Hadjar secretly assists an assassination attempt against Primus, using the confusion to wound the king before killing the attacker himself. A captured rebel denounces Primus as a usurper and names the lost prince as Lidus's true ruler. Primus responds by restoring Hadjar's rank as General Traves and assigning him to eliminate the rebels in the White Forest. The mission advances Hadjar's concealed revenge plan, even as the public challenge to Primus increases suspicion around the throne.

So far this book: Primus orders Hadjar to return within five weeks with the northern rebel leader's head, threatening a massive assault if he fails. Hadjar takes a small special-guard detachment into the White Forest, intending to use the soldiers as bait. Supernatural dangers, snow warriors, and attempted desertion steadily destroy the force. Azrea guides the survivors toward the hidden rebels. Their leader is Atticus, a former general and old friend of Haver who helped Primus seize power. Hadjar offers to join the rebellion and vows to kill Primus. When the royal lieutenant orders the cannons fired, rebel archers eliminate the escort. Atticus then transports Hadjar into the rebel camp and recognizes him as the missing prince. Hadjar has reached the force he meant to infiltrate, but he must now confront a man tied directly to his family's fall while his own identity is no longer secret inside the camp.

So far this book: Atticus explains that he, Haver, Primus, Elizabeth, and Leonora once faced a demonic incursion during war. A supernatural envoy called the disaster a heavenly error and required one woman to remain behind. Leonora sacrificed herself, leaving Primus grieving and Atticus indebted to him. Later, Primus planned to trade control of a valuable ore vein for Darnassus support and demanded Atticus's help removing Haver. A curse and prophecy prevented Atticus from escaping his assigned part. Atticus reveals that half a million northern rebels have waited to restore Hadjar. Hadjar nevertheless refuses reconciliation and duels him. Snowmen mortally wound Atticus, after which Hadjar completes their fight and kills him. Hadjar returns to Primus with Atticus's head and inherited dagger. The dagger exposes him as Hadjar Duran. Primus has him incapacitated and imprisoned in the dungeon where he suffered as a child.

So far this book: Primus suppresses Hadjar's cultivation and confines him with his former nanny, who has endured years of torture rather than disclose the route to the king's sword. At her request, Hadjar ends her suffering. Nero secretly brings Moonbeam and the means to escape, but Hadjar chooses to remain and face execution. As guards lead him to be burned, citizens cover his route with red flowers and officials quietly offer him painless poison. At the stake, Primus brands him a false prince. Hadjar rejects the public's passivity and calls on them to resist Darnassus and the king. A child answers first, then the crowd and executioner turn against the imperial forces. Leon arrives with the Moon Army and foreign allies. The real Moonbeam frees Hadjar from his collar. With his powers restored and the square in revolt, Hadjar leads the uprising toward the palace.

So far this book: The Moon Army, allied soldiers, palace guards, Hadjar's old sword master, and Azrea help break imperial control of the palace. Inside, Nero and Serra warn that killing Primus could bring Darnassus down on Lidus. Nero offers a different future in which he, Serra, Hadjar, and Elaine leave together. Hadjar accepts friendship over revenge. Before they can depart, the governor seals the palace, binds Primus, and reveals power far beyond what the court expected. He kills Nero from behind and turns his remaining warriors against Hadjar and Serra. Serra enhances Moonbeam with a spell that will soon destroy the weapon. She then unleashes blue fire that kills the governor and the surviving legionnaires while consuming her as well. Hadjar sends Leon and the Moon Army outside to secure the perimeter. Wounded and grieving Nero and Serra, he remains alone in the ruined palace with Primus for their final confrontation.

So far this book: Primus mourns Aaron before dueling Hadjar through the collapsing palace. Both are badly injured and exhaust their cultivation. Primus spends his remaining vitality on a final thrust, but Hadjar invokes the sword spirit and uses the last of Moonbeam to kill him. Elaine arrives under the mistaken belief that Hadjar murdered her father and attacks with the ancestral sword. Hadjar uses the tree's red leaf to restore her memories of Haver, Elizabeth, and her older brother. Rather than risk killing Elaine, he accepts her attack and falls into the lake below. Leen declares Elaine the rightful queen and Hadjar a dead false prince, securing the succession through the public story he intended. Darnassus accepts Elaine's rule under a new governor. She reforms the mines and creates the Northern Moon force with a neighboring kingdom. Azrea rescues Hadjar from the lake. He privately reconciles with Elaine, promises to return, and leaves Lidus with Azrea, Serra and Aaron's bracelets, and a new goal: reaching the gods' realm.

Nero persuades Hadjar to abandon revenge and leave Lidus with Serra and Elaine, but the Darnassus governor seals the palace and murders Nero. Serra enhances Moonbeam, destroys the governor and his remaining legionnaires with blue fire, and dies in the attack. Hadjar then defeats Primus, losing Moonbeam and suffering nearly fatal wounds. He restores Elaine's memories, but allows her attack to cast him into the lake so the kingdom can accept a public account in which the false prince died and Elaine became its rightful queen. Leen supports Elaine as military counselor, and Darnassus accepts her reign while appointing another governor. Elaine reforms the mines and forms the Northern Moon force with a neighboring kingdom. Azrea rescues Hadjar, who secretly reunites with Elaine before leaving Lidus. Carrying Serra and Aaron's wedding bracelets, he continues as Hadjar Traves and sets out to reach the gods' realm. Elaine keeps his survival secret and awaits his return.
