Hadjar and Einen enter the Holy Sky School at its lowest rank, survive extortion, house vendettas, a disastrous giant hunt, and war with rival disciples, then earn promotion to full disciples. Dora becomes their ally and fulfills her promise to replace Hadjar's spatial ring. A massacre in the capital reveals that rival descendants of the Black General hunt one another. Elven leaders discover a large fragment of that ancient enemy's soul sealed inside Hadjar, and a healer gives him seven years to reach lord level before her conditional poison kills him. Tom later defeats and nearly kills Einen in a sanctioned duel. Hadjar breaks into the arena, wounds Tom, and attracts an elder sword mentor, who sends him toward Fort Derrigan for an ancient scroll. Pirates attack his transport on behalf of an unknown client who wants him alive. Hadjar kills the retrieval agent but crashes beyond the western border, injured and alone in hostile territory.

Previously: Hadjar survived Underworld City and became a heaven soldier, carrying a dangerous inherited sword power and the legacy of his dragon mentor, Traves. Einen remained his closest companion. Rahaim gave the pair recommendations to the Holy Sky School, offering them a route into the far more powerful cultivation world of the Empire. They begin this volume intending to use those recommendations to seek admission and advancement together.

Two months after their meeting with Rahaim, Hadjar and Einen leave Underworld City. Shock chooses another path, carrying Ilmena's ribbon and intending to report the dead to their families. The friends cross the Empire with a noble caravan and then aboard a flying frigate, arriving in the capital with little money and only two examination days remaining. At the Holy Sky School they find an extraordinary field of young heaven soldiers and deliberately apply at the lowest, ordinary-disciple rank. A hostile heir of the Predatory Blades clan takes offense at Hadjar, creating an early enemy. Dalit's crushing pressure eliminates almost every ordinary applicant, but both companions endure it and pass the age test. In the final trial, Einen drives his staff spear deep into a steel monolith. Hadjar summons his black blade and cuts the monolith in half. Mentor Jean admits them both as ordinary disciples. Their entry succeeds, but examiner Markin has secretly recognized Hadjar and begun coveting his name for an alchemical pill.

School life immediately exposes the cost of low status. Ordinary disciples receive no teaching, pay inflated prices, and must earn glory points before seeking promotion. Hadjar and Einen build a defended hut in the Forest of Knowledge and refuse an established disciple's demand for their starting points. Meanwhile, the Predatory Blades heir orders his sword-wielding attendant to punish them. She overwhelms and injures Hadjar but holds back before the final blow. Hadjar develops a powerful attachment to her and resolves to overcome the gulf between them. During a gathering task in the Forest of Shadows, more than thirty extortionists ambush the pair. Hadjar removes the archers while Einen holds the melee fighters with his armored ape manifestation. Fighting back-to-back, they kill the attackers despite exhaustion and dwindling medicine. Their leader then opens a supposedly formal duel with a surprise artifact attack, but Einen kills him with the River Serpent technique. As the wounded friends gather the spoils, Dora, a formidable elf carrying an imperial hammer, intercepts them and offers knowledge about her people.

Dora needs Hadjar's spatial ring for a forbidden elven technique. After threats fail, she offers compensation and swears a mutual non-harm oath, so Hadjar and Einen agree to help. She explains the origin of elves and leads them through hostile spirits that repeatedly identify Hadjar as a descendant of an ancient enemy. At the Forest of Shadows spirit's domain, Dora uses the ring to steal part of the spirit's power for her house and her Tournament of Twelve ambitions. Hadjar takes primordial water as payment, and Dora promises a much better ring within six months. On returning, the companions learn that the dead extortionist served House Tarez, whose agents now seek revenge. Hadjar uses most of the primordial water to widen and lengthen his meridians, making his techniques faster and stronger through a dangerous process his mixed human and dragon nature barely permits. Unconscious afterward, he meets Traves within his inner realm. A memory of Traves's old sword master teaches Hadjar about the Sword's Heart and a personal Kingdom of the Sword. Traves then reveals that Hadjar is his distant descendant through the Duran bloodline and carries a future obligation to him.

Hadjar renews his purpose and completes Azure Cloud, the seventh stance of Light Breeze. He and Einen travel to the Valley of Swamps for a gathering task, where Dora recruits them into a large hunt led by the Predatory Blades heir. Before the expedition begins, House Tarez servant Ian Gore confronts them. The hunt's contract prevents his full group from joining in, so Hadjar kills Ian's two allies and fights him alone. Ian uses restricted lightning techniques and repeated enhancements that poison his own body. Hadjar survives the escalation, kills him, claims his glory points, and secretly finds a red demonic stone among his possessions. Hadjar later meets Helmer, the Lord of Nightmares, inside Einen's shadow barrier. In exchange for the stone, Helmer claims that the Black General was an ancient spirit and Hadjar's ancestor, known to demons as Darkhan. He also admits supplying Ian with the stone, prohibited techniques, and training. The information comes at a cost: Hadjar is obligated to enter the Tournament of Twelve once he can qualify, which first requires reaching the school's inner circle.

Helmer's hint teaches Hadjar that the Black Blade can consume energy stones. The giant hunt then reveals a more dangerous test. Around fifteen hundred cultivators confront an intelligent primeval giant while the Predatory Blades heir secretly prepares a formation that treats most participants as expendable bait. The giant's stomps, stone attacks, and regenerating golems kill large numbers as Hadjar, Einen, Dora, and the elite heirs climb toward a scar on its neck. A Phoenix Crypt spell burns and shrinks the giant but also devastates nearby disciples and the formation users. During the final assault, Hadjar drives the Black Blade into the scar and secretly drains concentrated spirit essence from the giant's artery. The hunt leader's indiscriminate artifact strike wounds Hadjar, but the artery is severed and the giant dies. Einen saves Hadjar from the collapsing body. When the extracted core proves much weaker than expected, the heir suspects Hadjar and attacks him. Dora blocks the killing blow and openly condemns the sacrifice of fellow disciples. Only about two hundred and fifty hunters survive, and Hadjar has gained both valuable giant blood and the lasting hostility of the hunt's leader.

The dispute over the giant ends with Hadjar receiving extra compensation. He and Einen determine that the Black Blade absorbed roughly a quarter of the giant's power and has advanced into a heaven-level artifact. They swear secrecy strong enough to resist mental interrogation. Beneath the giant's corpse, a summons in the wind leads Hadjar to an underground river containing dreamgrass. He resists its attacks on his memories, harvests a large supply, and shares it with Einen after using some for his own cultivation. On the Imperial Road, roughly three thousand cultivators from two rival schools block the surviving Holy Sky School force. Despite being outnumbered more than ten to one, the smaller group attacks. Hadjar initially falters after killing a very young opponent, but Einen returns him to the battle. In the crisis, Hadjar grasps the Sword's Heart and recognizes freedom as the principle behind his swordsmanship. He defeats a powerful opponent and survives an honorable duel with a better-equipped full disciple, who withdraws with a promise of a rematch. Griffin riders from Dora's house drive off the rival force. Only sixty-three Holy Sky School cultivators survive the road battle.

Back at school, the companions convert their battlefield gains into enough glory points for the promotion exam. Einen reveals that he secretly practices unlicensed alchemy, having hidden it to protect Hadjar from the consequences. A mysterious long-lived mentor takes an interest in Hadjar, while the Treasure Tower keeper sells both friends their examination scrolls. They turn the public test into a betting event, with Dora wagering on a rapid success. In the first stage, Hadjar withstands an artifact's weapon pressure, deepens his sword insight, and destroys its escalating lightning technique without drawing his physical sword. He then eliminates five peak heaven-soldier golems with a single black crescent and becomes a full disciple. Einen's test forces him to define the purpose of his weapon. Remembering the weapon his father gave him and the escape his father enabled, he realizes that his path is protection and manifests a defensive weapon-in-the-heart technique. He also passes the golem trial. Both friends receive gold tokens and full-disciple status. After collecting their winnings, Dora uses her authority to take them into the capital and fulfill her promise to replace Hadjar's spatial ring.

A master artifact maker gives Hadjar a bound heaven-level ring with a large storage space. Dora then takes the companions to an elite restaurant, where Hadjar turns a former battlefield opponent into a respectful prospective rival. Assassins storm the building and target Dora with poisoned bolts. Einen shields her and is gravely wounded. Hadjar and the young noble swordsman fight together, but the noble takes a poisoned bolt meant for Hadjar. The group escapes into a sealed garden, where a female spirit-knight assassin offers an antidote only if Hadjar defeats her. She reveals that she shares the Black General's inheritance and has killed many other inheritors to take their power. Hadjar pierces her with the Black Blade and drains her spirit, but she summons a blood spirit and reaches power comparable to a lord. Using a golden elixir and the inherited image of the Black General, Hadjar breaks the garden veil and kills her. Her last poisoned dagger strikes the noble swordsman, who dies after acknowledging Hadjar as a friend. Dora's elder sister carries the survivors away for treatment. Unconscious, Hadjar meets a talking raven that claims authority over him by descent.

An elf healer cures Einen and improves his damaged energy body, but Hadjar's condition is more dangerous. She finds a severe wound in his soul and an ancient dark force that repels her examination. Within himself, Hadjar confronts the raven-form ancient enemy, who offers to become his master and teach him unmatched swordsmanship in return for cooperation against the gods. Hadjar refuses, remaining loyal to Traves. The elf ruler regards him as a danger and prepares to execute him, but the elves' ancestral tree intervenes. The healer and ruler explain that the ancient enemy's soul was divided after the Great War and scattered through bloodlines. Hadjar carries one of fewer than ten large fragments, sealed inside part of his own soul. The fragment has grown by consuming another, and the seal may eventually allow the enemy to possess him. His inherited Black Blade is a separate spirit weapon. The healer administers a seven-colored poison that reinforces the seal and buys time. Hadjar must reach lord level within seven years, in which case the poison disappears. If he fails, it kills him in the eighth year.

Hadjar finds Einen fully recovered, and the elf ruler ultimately releases both men as guests while departing for an imperial war council. Panic spreads through the capital amid fear of war with Laskin. Back at school, Tom challenges Einen to a sanctioned dawn duel. The Treasure Tower offers no suitable new technique, but the healer's work has greatly strengthened Einen's channels and defensive manifestation. Under a lord's binding barrier, Einen withstands Tom's opening attack and hurls him into the arena wall with River Serpent. Tom recovers behind his imperial equipment, overwhelms Einen with superior speed and the Thunder God Sword, and uses the wounded man to pressure Dora into accepting a proposal. When she refuses to answer, Tom drives his sword into Einen's chest. Hadjar attacks the supposedly lord-proof barrier in a rage, combining his call and Black Blade strongly enough to crack it. He breaks into the arena, seizes Tom, and cuts him. Although Einen's survival remains uncertain at this point, Hadjar has violated a formal duel and placed himself directly against an inner-circle heir under the eyes of the school's lords.

Hadjar discovers that Einen is alive and moves him outside the damaged arena, then continues fighting Tom despite being outmatched. Tom's lightning defenses and proprietary high-speed techniques repeatedly wound him. Hadjar answers with Black Wind, derived from the inherited image of an ancient sword strike, but cannot sustain the exchange. At the edge of defeat, a memory of Traves reveals the price attached to the dragon heart: Hadjar must kill the Dragon Emperor and plant a tree in the lost Dark Storm homeland. Hadjar then confronts the inner sword-spirit seal, breaks one of its lines, and returns with renewed blue-and-black power. Though Tom's blade passes through his side, Hadjar wounds him through imperial armor before collapsing. A school lord intervenes and claims Hadjar as a future disciple. Further memories show Traves restoring his destroyed homeland, losing his wife and unborn daughter to murder, attacking the Dragon Emperor, and being defeated and imprisoned. The Emperor denied ordering the murders, leaving responsibility unresolved. On waking, Hadjar accepts the lord as a prospective mentor, contingent on earning inner-circle status. Tom's sister also voices suspicion that Hadjar is the wanted Mad General, but he gives no answer.

Dora confirms that Einen survived and is receiving treatment, though he will need about two more weeks to recover. Hadjar promises to repay her for arranging that care. His prospective mentor offers a mission to retrieve an ancient Wastelands scroll from a friend at Fort Derrigan, with a large glory-point reward that would advance Hadjar toward the inner-circle examination. Fully healed by a pill included with the instructions, Hadjar accepts and joins the warship Rook's Wings as a watchman. Near the contested western border, the wind falls silent and an ambush begins. Crossbow fire wounds the bosun and kills the coxswain before a heavily armed pirate ship closes in. Hadjar destroys incoming cannonballs, but a peak heaven-soldier pirate reveals that an unnamed client has paid to capture him alive. Hadjar leaps between the colliding ships, kills the retrieval agent, and commandeers her winged mount. The creature goes out of control and crashes, breaking Hadjar's bones. Rook's Wings also falls. Hadjar survives, injured and separated from every ally, but realizes that the crash has stranded him beyond the border in hostile imperial territory.

Einen survives Tom's attack and receives further healing arranged by Dora, leaving him alive but separated from Hadjar for the border mission. Tom also survives after Hadjar breaches the sanctioned duel and cuts through his imperial armor. Hadjar accepts an elder lord as a prospective mentor, but must gain inner-circle status before receiving his sword-spirit instruction. He also owes Dora for Einen's care and remains bound to the seven-year deadline imposed by the elf healer: he must reach lord level before the protective poison becomes fatal. The ancient enemy's soul fragment, the raven ancestor, rival inheritors, Helmer's Tournament of Twelve obligation, and the Raven sect remain unresolved. Hadjar departs alone to retrieve a Wastelands scroll from Fort Derrigan, but an unknown client hires pirates to capture him alive. After Rook's Wings is attacked, Hadjar kills the pirate sent for him and escapes on her flying mount. The mount crashes beyond the border, breaking Hadjar's bones. Rook's Wings also falls, and the fates of its commander and crew are unknown. Hadjar ends the book stranded in hostile territory while war with Laskin approaches.
