Once the exiled heir of a destroyed noble house, Paul rose among the desert Fremen to become their prophesied messiah and, through a holy war fought in his name, seized the throne of the known universe. Twelve years into his reign he rules as Emperor from the desert planet Arrakis, worshipped as a living god by billions. Awakened to a terrible prescience by the spice, he can glimpse the branching paths of the future, yet he feels trapped by his own myth and horrified by the galaxy-spanning slaughter his followers carry out in his name. He is wed for politics to Princess Irulan, while his heart belongs to the Fremen woman Chani.

A Fremen woman of the desert, daughter of the planetologist Liet-Kynes, and Paul's beloved partner. Though Paul married another for political reasons, Chani is his true companion and the woman he loves, a fierce desert-bred fighter who shares his life and hopes to give him an heir. She is devoted to him and holds a place of honor among the Fremen.

Paul's younger sister, born already possessing the awareness and ancestral memories of an adult after their mother underwent a spice ordeal while pregnant. A powerful young Reverend Mother venerated by the Fremen as a holy figure, she wields real authority in her brother's new imperial order and carries the heavy, dangerous burden of the countless lives that speak within her.

The Fremen naib who once led the desert community that sheltered Paul and his mother. Now a trusted commander and devoted servant of the Emperor, he stands as a bridge between the old, hard ways of the desert and the vast new power Paul's rule has created, his loyalty to Muad'Dib absolute.

Eldest daughter of the deposed Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and trained by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. Paul married her to legitimize his claim to the throne, but she is his wife in title only, denied his love and denied children. She records the history of his reign while resenting the hollow role forced upon her.

A Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother who once served as the old Emperor's Truthsayer and long opposed House Atreides. She resents Paul's grip on the sisterhood's carefully bred bloodlines and his refusal to serve their aims, and she is drawn into the circle of powers who fear his absolute rule.

A Face Dancer of the Bene Tleilax, a shapeshifter able to take on the appearance, voice, and manner of others. He represents the secretive Tleilaxu among a group of powers who conspire against the Emperor, and he pursues hidden aims of his own with cold patience.

A Guild Navigator, mutated by a lifetime immersed in spice gas into a being who floats within a sealed tank and can fold space for starships. His own limited prescience makes him useful to a conspiracy that hopes to hide its plans from the Emperor's far-seeing eyes.

A ghola grown by the Bene Tleilax from the recovered flesh of Duncan Idaho, the Atreides swordmaster who died defending Paul's family years before. Presented to the Emperor as a gift and trained as a mentat, he is a living enigma, and neither Paul nor those around him can be sure what purpose lies behind his creation.

A dwarf of the Bene Tleilax with an odd, compulsive manner and a mind built for hidden functions. Delivered as part of the plot surrounding the Emperor, he speaks in riddles and unsettling patterns, a small figure carrying purposes far larger than himself.
