In short (whole book)
After being murdered, a man's fading awareness becomes Cal, a Dungeon Core beneath the Phantom Mountains. Guided by the wisp Dani, he builds a lethal dungeon around a Silverwood Tree. Shepherd Dale survives its first incursion, claims the mountain, and turns the discovery into a growing settlement supported by the Adventurers Guild, a church, a portal, and prospective dark-elf settlers. Cal advances by cultivating ambient essence and absorbing energy released by dead delvers, while Dale becomes a cultivator and landowner. A faulty rune brings a distortion cat into the dungeon. Dale's new party kills it, but the creature pierces his heart. Cal secretly replaces Dale's ruined cultivation center with a soul-gem construct. Dale revives at D-rank 1, can hear Cal and Dani, and possesses extraordinary growth potential, while Cal reaches D-rank 5 and suspects Dale is now dungeon-born. Beyond the mountain, an infernal faction connected to Cal's creation begins preparing another dungeon.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
A murdered man's disembodied awareness falls beneath the Phantom Mountains and settles into a blue gem. With most of his former memories gone, he learns to draw essence from nearby matter and discovers that he is a newly sentient dungeon core. Cantor, a distant elder dungeon, sends the pink wisp Dani to help. She names the core Cal, bonds their survival, and teaches him to expand his influence, refine essence, create creatures, and conceal his vulnerable crystal body. Cal grows a cave complex, cultivates a rare Silverwood seed, and fills his rooms with shroomish, hostile plants, traps, and increasingly dangerous bosses. His expansion alerts nearby shepherds. Five enter in search of wealth, but traps and monsters kill three. Dale pushes the abusive Tim into the mushrooms and leaves as the only survivor. The deaths drive Cal to F-rank 8 and strengthen his dungeon. Dale hides what happened, purchases the land, and reports the discovery to the Adventurers Guild. A powerful scouting party initially suspects an infernal dungeon, but an elf recognizes the young Silverwood Tree and prevents its destruction. Cal's home is accepted as a new adventuring site rather than eliminated.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Cal learns that he was human before his soul was placed in a refined soul gem. This unusual origin lets him handle many kinds of essence, while his hatred of necromancers keeps him from using undead. He and Dani rebuild after the guild's first inspection, create self-sustaining rabbit mobs called Bashers, and study equipment, runes, and the essence released by cultivators and slain delvers. Cal deliberately balances danger with rewards so stronger powers will tolerate the dungeon. Meanwhile, the Silverwood Tree and Cal's neutral essence draw the Adventurers Guild, the church, elves, and rival kingdoms toward the mountain. Guildmaster Frank protects Dale's claim and arranges training under Craig, an essence specialist. Craig purges the corruption from Dale's cultivation center and gives him a clean foundation. Dale trains with a regular party that includes Hans, while Father Richard establishes a church presence. Dale secures deeds from both the Lion Kingdom and Phoenix Kingdom, confirming his control of the mountain. Sustained traffic supplies Cal with enough essence for a major breakthrough. He reaches D-rank 0, reshapes his cultivation spirals, expands the dungeon to two floors, and creates Raile, a granite-armored Basher boss supported by celestial healing creatures.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
While Cal seals the entrance to finish his redesign, Craig teaches Dale to open meridians and see essence. Dale also negotiates from a stronger position with the Portal Guild. He rejects James's poor offer, and High Magus Amber replaces it with an agreement granting Dale a share of portal revenue and free travel privileges. When the dungeon reopens, inexperienced delvers die on the hidden second floor, advancing Cal to D-rank 2. Dale's established team - Craig, Hans, Josh, and Steve - survives the floor and defeats Raile, though Josh loses his shield and Dale suffers broken ribs. Craig declares the lower floor restricted to D-ranked guild parties. Cal adds a one-way exit and discovers that celestial quartz above the boss room forms an enchanted viewing window. Father Richard identifies its inscription as church magic that strengthens celestial energy and breaks infernal bonds, but its maker remains unknown. A masked intruder later attacks Dale and is expelled from the mountain without being identified. On another run, Dale's team defeats Raile with the attacker's life-draining dagger, which Cal then takes. The new portal finally opens, bringing crowds and rapid growth. Frank suppresses a violent rush through it, while James apologizes and Dale allows him to remain as a possible ally.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Portal traffic expands both the dungeon's visitors and Dale's public responsibilities. Cal adds harsher traps, healing rewards, valuable loot, and hidden dangers in the mine. Deaths bring him to D-rank 3, but he confirms that he receives released essence rather than the victims' souls. He also develops linked runes that gather and refine ambient essence. Dale and Hans visit the Lion Kingdom capital, where Hans reveals that thieves trained him after his childhood on the streets. Dale meets the restaurateur known as Madame, later learning she is Chandra, an A-rank 9 plant mage and Frank's former teacher. Brianna, a dark-elf royal from the Huin Nation, negotiates preliminary rights to the Silverwood Tree because its pollen is needed for elven fertility. Her people promise settlement, protection, taxes, and recognition of Dale's rule. Father Richard then forces Dale through a dangerous shortcut to D-rank 0, leaving his new fractal cultivation center damaged but viable. Dale must form his own higher-ranked team. Hans joins him, and Chandra presents her granddaughter Rose, a half-elf archer whose opposing celestial and infernal affinities have left her unable to use essence safely. Dale grants Rose a provisional trial. At the same time, Cal's flawed attempt to activate a large rune array opens a portal and draws a distortion cat into the dungeon. The predator kills Raile and seven miners before taking over the boss room.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
The distortion cat remains inside the dungeon after its attack on the miners. Dale forms a provisional party with Hans, Rose, the barbarian Tom, and the cleric Adam. They enter just before Frank seals the entrance to contain the threat, leaving the group no route out except the boss-room stair. Cal directs unusually aggressive creatures against them and supplies specialized equipment as they advance, intending for the party to remove the predator. Dense dungeon essence repairs Rose's damaged cultivation spiral and restores her ability to grow normally. In the boss room, the cat uses darkness, sound, tentacles, and distorted light to overwhelm the party. Dale's celestial pendant breaks an infernal restraint, Hans poisons the creature, Adam dispels its darkness, and Tom breaks its spine. The wounded cat still pierces Dale's heart before a suddenly recovered Tom decapitates it. Adam repairs the heart, but Dale does not wake. Cal secretly replaces Dale's ruined center with a rune-inscribed soul-gem structure. Dale revives, opens every remaining meridian, binds a new Morningstar, and rapidly advances to D-rank 1. He can now hear Cal and Dani, though his companions believe the Silverwood Tree saved him. Cal reaches D-rank 5 and suspects that his intervention made Dale dungeon-born.
How does it end? (ending)
Dale, Hans, Rose, Tom, and Adam survive the trapped expedition, although the distortion cat wounds several of them severely. Tom kills the creature after an unexplained recovery, and Adam repairs Dale's pierced heart, but Dale remains unresponsive. Hidden beneath the Silverwood Tree, Cal rebuilds Dale's cultivation center as a rune-worked soul gem. Dale revives with every meridian open, rapidly reaches D-rank 1, binds an enlarged Morningstar, and begins hearing Cal and Dani. His companions believe the Silverwood Tree restored him and do not know what Cal changed. Cal reaches D-rank 5, gains a limited distortion-cat pattern, and privately suspects Dale has become dungeon-born. The mountain settlement remains under Dale's authority, with guild, church, portal, commercial, and Huin Nation arrangements still developing. The masked attack on Dale and the origin of the celestial inscriptions remain unresolved. Outside the numbered story, an infernal faction reveals that sacrificed acolytes and a soul stone produced Cal. Its leaders postpone action against his dungeon while preparing slaves and a soul for an infernal dungeon of their own.
