Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Bella Swan (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Engaged in all but name to the vampire Edward Cullen and still set on becoming a vampire herself. Bella is torn between her all-consuming love for Edward and her deep bond with her werewolf best friend, Jacob Black, caught between the two of them and between the feuding vampire and wolf communities. Confined and protected against a rising threat, she struggles to hold her competing loyalties, and her own heart, together.

Edward Cullen (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The vampire Bella loves and intends to marry, protective and controlling in his determination to keep her safe. Uneasy about her friendship with Jacob and about the dangers gathering around Forks, he resists changing Bella too soon and presses her to marry him first.

Jacob Black (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Bella's werewolf best friend from the Quileute reservation, openly in love with her and unwilling to give her up to Edward. Fierce, warm, and stubborn, he forces Bella to confront that she loves him too, even as she chooses Edward. His pack's ancient enmity with vampires complicates every step between them.

Charlie Swan (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Bella's father, the police chief of Forks, alarmed by a string of unexplained killings and disappearances in nearby Seattle. He distrusts Edward, favours Jacob, and tries to keep his daughter close and safe without understanding the true nature of the danger.

Alice Cullen (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Cullen sister who sees the future, and Bella's close friend. Her visions track the mounting threat from Seattle, though the werewolves are a blind spot she cannot see through, which repeatedly hampers the family's foresight.

Carlisle Cullen (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Cullens' compassionate physician father, who helps lead the family's response to the coming danger and, when the time comes, tends the wounded after the battle. Principled and steady, he anchors the family through the crisis.

Jasper Hale (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Cullen who was created and raised amid vicious vampire wars in the American South long ago. His grim history makes him the family's expert on newborn vampires, and he trains both the Cullens and the wolves to fight an army of them.

Rosalie Hale (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

The beautiful, aloof Cullen sister who has long resented Bella. She finally explains her coldness by telling Bella the story of her own human life and violent death, urging Bella to think hard before giving up mortality and the chance at an ordinary human future.

Victoria (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The red-haired vampire who has hunted Bella ever since the Cullens destroyed her mate, James, in revenge for his death. Cunning and elusive, she has evaded both the Cullens and the wolves and still means to kill Bella.

Riley Biers (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 22

A young man turned into a vampire and manipulated into leading a savage army of newly created vampires. Kept loyal by lies and by the promise of love, he serves as a lieutenant in the assault on the Cullens and Bella.

Seth Clearwater (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 24

A young, eager member of the Quileute wolf pack, Leah's brother. Good-natured and enthusiastic despite his youth, he insists on helping and stays to guard Bella and Edward during the decisive fight, forming an unexpected friendship with Edward.
