In short (whole book)
Ten years after the magic of Elantris failed and its radiant inhabitants became undying sufferers, Arelon's prince Raoden is struck by the same transformation and secretly thrown into the ruined city. Calling himself Spirit, he joins Galladon and begins organizing the starving Elantrians into a community while investigating why their Aons no longer work. Princess Sarene arrives from Teod to marry Raoden, is told he has died, and becomes his legal widow under their treaty. She allies with his friends and with nobles opposed to King Iadon, then turns her political skill against Hrathen, the Derethi priest charged with converting Arelon before Fjorden takes it by force. Hrathen seeks an orderly religious victory, but his militant subordinate Dilaf encourages fear and hatred. By the midpoint, Raoden has restored purpose but not magic inside Elantris, Sarene has become a major force in court, and Hrathen is running out of time as all three unknowingly shape the same national crisis.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
A decade after the magical city of Elantris abruptly failed, its former inhabitants remain trapped there as disfigured people who cannot heal or die. Crown Prince Raoden wakes to find that the Shaod has transformed him into one of them. King Iadon declares his son dead and has him secretly thrown into the city, where Raoden takes the name Spirit and meets the cynical Dula farmer Galladon. At the same time, Princess Sarene of Teod arrives to complete a political marriage with Raoden. Although told that he died, she learns their contract already makes her his widow and binds her to Arelon. A third newcomer, the Derethi priest Hrathen, announces that he intends to convert the kingdom. He privately knows he has only months to succeed before the empire of Fjorden uses force.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Raoden learns that Elantrians feel every injury forever and are eventually overwhelmed by accumulated pain and hunger. Refusing to accept the city's despair, he and Galladon begin gathering food, cleaning a defensible area, and offering other inhabitants an alternative to the predatory gangs. Their efforts bring them into conflict with Karata, who leads a faction while protecting a group of children. Outside the walls, Sarene settles with her merchant uncle Kiin and finds the political circle Raoden had quietly built among nobles such as Lukel, Shuden, and Duke Roial. She sees that Iadon's wealth-based monarchy is fragile and that Hrathen is exploiting that weakness. Hrathen begins a disciplined public campaign for conversion, but his local subordinate Dilaf favors anger and intimidation, creating tension within their own side.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Spirit's settlement expands as Raoden persuades frightened Elantrians that useful work and shared rules can give them purpose even without a cure. Karata gradually recognizes that his community may offer greater safety for the children she protects, while the soldier Saolin brings discipline to the effort. Raoden also searches the abandoned city for records about AonDor, the magic Elantrians once used by tracing symbolic forms, but every Aon he draws remains inert. Sarene takes a more public role in Arelon. She strengthens Raoden's old alliance, challenges the court's restrictive expectations of women, and starts answering Hrathen's political theater with maneuvers of her own. Their contest becomes a struggle for nobles and ordinary citizens who fear both economic collapse and foreign domination.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Raoden's followers reclaim more of Elantris, combining Galladon's practical knowledge, Karata's fierce protection, and Saolin's training. The work cannot remove their pain, but it replaces isolated despair with an organized community. Raoden continues comparing the forms and principles of Aons with the physical world, convinced that the old magic has failed for a reason rather than vanished at random. Sarene and Hrathen trade increasingly consequential public moves. She uses family, commercial, and noble connections to keep Arelon from accepting Derethi rule out of panic, while Hrathen tries to present conversion as the only orderly path away from invasion. Dilaf's zeal makes Hrathen's controlled strategy harder to maintain. King Iadon, meanwhile, becomes more defensive as his financial system and political support weaken.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
By the end of this portion, Spirit has changed the balance within Elantris. His growing settlement provides food, duties, and protection to people whom the fallen city had reduced to rival groups, and even former opponents work beside him. The deeper problem remains: Elantrians cannot heal, their pain never fades, and Raoden has not yet found the missing principle that would restore AonDor. Sarene has become a leading political actor in Arelon, drawing together Raoden's former friends and nobles dissatisfied with Iadon while preventing Hrathen from gaining an easy conversion. She still mourns a husband she never met and has no reason to connect him with Spirit. Hrathen sees his timetable slipping and must contend both with Sarene's effective resistance and with Dilaf's appetite for violent religious action. Arelon remains exposed, with its king losing confidence and Fjorden's deadline approaching.
How does it end? (ending)
At the close of this first portion, none of the three central struggles has been resolved. Raoden, living as Spirit, has survived Elantris and turned a growing group of its inhabitants toward cooperation, work, and mutual protection, but he still cannot explain why AonDor failed or reverse the Shaod. Sarene has built a political coalition from Raoden's old allies and the court's disaffected nobles while openly countering Hrathen's conversion drive; she still believes her husband died before she reached Arelon and does not know that Spirit is Raoden. Hrathen's planned conquest through persuasion is faltering as Sarene answers his public moves and Dilaf pushes the Derethi faction toward fanaticism. King Iadon's authority and Arelon's economy remain unstable. The two threatened kingdoms therefore approach the second half with Raoden's identity hidden, Elantris still broken, and Hrathen's deadline continuing to narrow.
