The fairy Lucinda curses Ella of Frell with absolute obedience, forcing her to follow any command. After her mother dies, Ella befriends Prince Charmont but is sent to finishing school with Hattie, who discovers and exploits the spell. Ella escapes, survives ogres by using their own persuasive language against them, and grows closer to Char. Her merchant father later marries Hattie's mother, Dame Olga, leaving Ella mistreated in her own home. While Char travels, friendship deepens into love through their letters, but Ella rejects his proposal because anyone who learned her secret could use her to harm him and the kingdom. Disguised, she attends royal balls and meets him again. When Char finally commands her to marry him, Ella's need to protect him becomes stronger than the enchantment: she refuses and breaks the curse herself. Free to choose, she marries Char and keeps the independent life and relationships she values.

Ella of Frell has lived since infancy under a fairy's misguided gift: she must obey any direct command. Her mother, Lady Eleanor, and the cook Mandy know the truth and help her resist commands by interpreting them narrowly, but neither can remove the spell. Lucinda, the fairy responsible, refuses to admit that her magic is harmful. When Ella is fifteen, her mother becomes ill and dies. At the funeral Ella meets Charmont, the young prince known as Char, and finds him easier to talk to than the other solemn guests. She also encounters Dame Olga and Olga's daughters, Hattie and Olive. Ella's frequently absent father, Sir Peter, returns to decide her future, but his concern is shaped more by social and commercial advantage than by what Ella wants.

Sir Peter sends Ella to finishing school with Hattie and Olive. On the journey she meets friendly gnomes and learns that her ear for languages extends beyond human speech, but her enchantment also leaves her vulnerable when orders put her in danger. At school, Ella rejects the polished behavior the mistresses demand and takes comfort in her friendship with Areida, an Ayorthaian student who shares her love of stories. Hattie notices Ella's strange inability to disobey. Once she confirms it, she uses commands to control Ella, take a treasured necklace, and interfere with Ella's friendship. Ella struggles to protect her secret because anyone who knows it can turn her into an unwilling tool. When an order threatens to separate her permanently from Areida, Ella decides that remaining at the school is intolerable and looks for a way to escape its control.

Ella leaves school and travels toward a giants' wedding where she hopes to find Lucinda and demand that the curse be removed. Along the way she is welcomed by a family of elves, including Slannen, and exchanges knowledge of their language and crafts. Her journey becomes dangerous when ogres capture her. Their speech itself has a magical power that encourages listeners to submit, but Ella uses her talent for imitation to speak persuasively in their own tongue and delay them. Char and a royal party arrive in time to stop the ogres, and Ella's friendship with the prince deepens as they continue toward the celebration. At the wedding, however, Lucinda remains convinced that her compulsory gifts are blessings. Ella cannot persuade the fairy to undo the enchantment and must return home still subject to every command.

Back in Frell, Ella learns that Sir Peter has damaged his fortune through failed ventures. His plans to recover financially treat marriage as another bargain. He eventually marries the wealthy Dame Olga, making Hattie and Olive part of Ella's household. When Sir Peter departs again, Olga and her daughters reduce Ella's status and burden her with domestic work, while Mandy can help only within the limits of the commands imposed on Ella. Char remains an important friend, and their affection grows, but his royal duties take him away from Kyrria. Ella begins exchanging letters with him during his absence. The distance lets them speak honestly, yet it also sharpens Ella's fear: if their relationship becomes public, her inability to disobey could threaten not only her own freedom but anyone whose safety depends on the prince.

Ella and Char's letters turn their friendship into love, and Char proposes marriage. Ella wants to accept but imagines how easily an enemy could order her to betray him or misuse royal power. Unable to reveal the curse in a letter that might be intercepted, she answers in a way designed to make him believe she does not love him. Char returns heartbroken, and the royal family announces a series of balls at which he may meet a bride. With Mandy's magical help, Ella attends in disguise and calls herself Lela. Char is drawn to the stranger without realizing she is Ella, while Hattie and the rest of the household do not recognize the servant they left behind. The disguise gives Ella a brief chance to be with Char without exposing him, but each meeting makes secrecy harder and brings her closer to the choice she has been avoiding.

Ella returns to the royal balls in disguise, but Hattie finally recognizes her. Ella flees, and Char follows her home, where he discovers that Lela and Ella are the same person. He again asks Ella to marry him and unknowingly phrases his demand as an order. The curse begins forcing Ella to accept. She realizes that an obedient queen could be commanded to betray Char and endanger Kyrria, and her determination to protect him gives her the strength to say no. By refusing the command, Ella breaks Lucinda's spell from within. She can then choose freely, accepts Char's proposal, and tells him the truth. Lucinda, after being made to experience the consequences of her own magical gifts, stops imposing them on others. Ella and Char marry. Ella does not surrender her identity to court convention: she continues working, studying languages, and keeping close ties with Mandy, Areida, and the friends who aided her, now living by her own decisions.

At the last royal ball, Ella's disguise fails and Char follows her home. He asks her to marry him and, without knowing the danger, turns the request into a command. Ella understands that marrying him while still enchanted would give any enemy a way to control the future queen and the kingdom. Her determination to protect Char finally lets her refuse, breaking Lucinda's spell through her own will. Ella then accepts Char freely and explains the secret she has guarded throughout her life. Lucinda has by now experienced the misery her coercive gifts can cause and abandons that practice. Ella and Char marry, but Ella declines to become a conventional, idle princess; they build a life that leaves room for her independence, work, and friendships. Mandy remains with them, and Ella is reunited with Areida and the other people who helped her. The ending recasts the familiar royal marriage as the result of Ella gaining the ability to choose rather than simply receiving a magical rescue.
