A local police officer and former schoolmate of Miles. Jimmy combines ingratiating conversation with resentment and opportunism. He is proud of his son Zack and attentive to any advantage that proximity to the Whiting family might offer.

Jimmy Minty's popular teenage son and Tick's former boyfriend. Zack is handsome and socially secure but uses ridicule and pressure to keep influence over Tick and over less protected students.

A withdrawn student in Tick's art class who lives in severe poverty and is a frequent target of other teenagers. Tick responds to his skill and vulnerability with kindness, although John's silence and intensity make it difficult for her to know what he is thinking.

Miles and David's mother, seen in Miles's memories of childhood. Grace worked hard, expected more from life than Empire Falls offered, and shared a particularly close bond with Miles. Her illness was the reason he abandoned college and returned home.

A polished stranger whom the young Miles knew during a family trip to Martha's Vineyard. Charlie's ease, money, and attention to Grace stand in sharp contrast to Max Roby's unreliability, leaving Miles with memories he does not yet fully understand.

A waitress at the Empire Grill and a former schoolmate of Miles. Charlene is direct about her affection for him, providing both companionship and an uncomfortable reminder of how readily he postpones decisions about his own future.
