A fifteen-year-old farm boy raised by his uncle in Palancar Valley, near the isolated mountain village of Carvahall. While hunting in the forbidding range called the Spine, he finds a smooth blue stone that turns out to be a dragon egg. Curious, practical, and stubborn, he is thrust out of his ordinary life when the egg hatches and binds him to its dragon, making him a Dragon Rider, the first new one in a generation. He must learn quickly what that means while danger closes in on his home.

The sapphire-blue dragon that hatches from the stone Eragon found, bonding to him mind to mind the moment he touches her. She grows with astonishing speed from a small hatchling into a powerful flying companion, sharing thoughts, emotions, and eventually speech with Eragon. Proud, fierce, and protective, she is both his closest friend and his partner in the ancient legacy of the Riders, and their two lives are now tied together for as long as they both live.

The gruff old storyteller of Carvahall, known for reciting tales of the vanished Dragon Riders. He proves to know far more about dragons, magic, and the wider world than a village elder should. When disaster strikes Eragon's home, Brom sets out with him, becoming his traveling companion and demanding teacher in swordsmanship and the ancient language through which magic is worked. Secretive about his own past, he guides Eragon's first dangerous steps as a Rider.

Eragon's uncle, a hardworking and stern but caring farmer who raised him as his own son alongside his own boy, Roran. Plainspoken and proud of his self-reliance, he keeps the family's small holding outside Carvahall through hard seasons and expects honesty and effort from those in his care.

Appears from the start

Eragon's older cousin and closest thing to a brother, Garrow's son. Steady, strong, and level-headed, he plans to marry a local girl and make his own way, and near the start of the story leaves the farm to take paid work in a neighboring town. His fortunes and Eragon's will remain entwined.

A skilled young swordsman who appears suddenly to rescue Eragon from deadly pursuers and then travels with him. Well-armed, well-trained, and clearly raised to more than a common life, he is guarded and bitter about his origins and reluctant to speak of where he comes from or approach centers of power. Loyal in a fight but wary of trust, he carries the weight of a past he would rather leave behind.

An elf whom Eragon first glimpses in troubling dreams and then finds held prisoner and poisoned in an enemy fortress. Strong-willed, reserved, and dangerous, she was carrying the dragon egg when it was intercepted and is bound up in the struggle against the Empire. Gravely ill from her captivity, she needs to reach the rebels who can heal her, and she becomes a crucial link between Eragon and the wider war.

An eccentric herbalist and fortune-teller Eragon meets in the port city of Teirm. Sharp-tongued, witty, and unpredictable, she reads his future with carved bones and gives cryptic, unsettling prophecies. She keeps the company of a werecat and clearly knows more magic than she admits, though her true loyalties and depth remain a mystery.

The commanding, imposing leader of the Varden, the rebel force that shelters in the hidden dwarf stronghold beneath the mountains and works to overthrow the king. Disciplined and shrewd, he weighs whether the newly arrived young Rider is an asset or a risk to his cause, and he holds together an uneasy alliance of humans, dwarves, and elves against a far greater power.

Ajihad's poised and intelligent daughter, who moves capably within the Varden's leadership. Composed and quietly ambitious, she takes an early measure of Eragon and shows a talent for politics and command that hints at a larger role to come in the rebellion.

A Shade, a sorcerer whose body has been taken over by malevolent spirits, granting him terrible power and unnatural strength but a cruel, unstable nature. Serving the king, he leads the hunt for the dragon egg and its Rider, striking down any who stand in his way. Pale, red-haired, and merciless, he is among the deadliest servants of the Empire.

The tyrant king of the Empire, himself a former Dragon Rider who long ago betrayed and destroyed the old order of Riders to seize absolute power. Feared across the land, he has ruled for generations through fear, sorcery, and force. Though he does not appear directly, his hunt for the last dragon egg and its Rider drives the danger that pursues Eragon from the first.
