Previously: Rachel Morgan survived the witches' attempt to shun and imprison her, helped stop Ku'Sox in San Francisco, and was acknowledged by demon society as one of its own. She then investigated murders committed by HAPA, a human-supremacist organization experimenting on witches and trying to reproduce demonlike traits. HAPA captured Rachel because the childhood treatment that cured her Rosewood syndrome made her blood uniquely useful to its research. Rachel removed the enchanted silver hiding her aura, restored her magic, and helped Winona and the other captives break the local facility's control. She returned to the church openly accepting her power, though the wider HAPA network remained. Nina survived the case while the undead Felix increased his control through their bond, and Rynn Cormel continued pressing Rachel to solve the loss of vampire souls. At this book's opening Rachel is visible to demons again, closely allied with Ivy and Jenks, and increasingly able to trust Trent.

Rachel learns that the ever-after is contracting and that the damage is connected to a ley line altered during her earlier conflict with Ku'Sox. Because the demons live inside that failing magical environment, they treat the problem as an existential threat and place responsibility on Rachel. She has only limited time to prove what is happening and repair it before demon judgment becomes lethal. Bis can sense the diseased connections more precisely than ordinary practitioners, while Trent's elven training offers methods that demon custom resists. Rachel begins investigating with help from Ivy and Jenks in Cincinnati and from Al in the ever-after, aware that Ku'Sox remains free and benefits from having the other demons blame her.
