Flightleader of Skyward Flight, a human cytonic, and by circumstance the person the Defiant Defense Force keeps handing problems that should belong to an admiral or a diplomat. He was raised to follow the rules exactly and is discovering that nothing he was trained for covers negotiating with an alien government while a war starts around him. He is also carrying a recent bereavement in his own family that he has had no time to sit with, and it shows in how hard he works.

A pilot of Skyward Flight, thoughtful and blunt, and the person most likely to say out loud that a chain of command is not the same thing as being right. She has become one of the DDF's authorities on the taynix and how they should be treated.

A pilot of Skyward Flight, precise and verbose, and the steady second Jorgen leans on when he is pulled away from the cockpit by everything else.

A cytonic pilot of the UrDail and the humans' first alien ally, who fought beside Skyward Flight over her own world. She and Jorgen have learned to work as a cytonic pair, and she is far more experienced than he is at using an ability he only recently discovered he had.

A kitsen, one of the fox-like people small enough to stand on a human hand, and formerly the god-emperor of his species before it dissolved the throne. He was among the alien pilots who trained alongside Spensa at Starsight. Courteous, poetic and entirely serious about ceremony.
