Previously: Rachel Morgan left Inderland Security and founded Vampiric Charms with living vampire Ivy Tamwood and pixy Jenks. Her first independent investigation exposed businessman Trent Kalamack and his security chief as secretly elven, though his organization survived. A later FIB case brought Rachel into ley-line magic while someone murdered gifted witches. Evidence first implicated Trent, but Rachel proved undead vampire master Piscary was responsible for the current and historical killings and helped put him into custody. During the case, Rachel accidentally made her human boyfriend Nick her familiar, damaging their relationship. She also bargained with demon Algaliarept and freed his ancient elven familiar Ceri. Nick then left Cincinnati. Rachel begins this book with Ceri at the church, Piscary imprisoned, Cincinnati's vampire hierarchy unstable, and Al entitled to collect the service Rachel promised him.

Algaliarept comes to collect Rachel's promised service. Ceri's centuries of experience with the demon allow her to prepare protections and coach Rachel through rules that Al would otherwise exploit. Rachel enters the encounter knowing that a poorly phrased agreement could leave her permanently bound. She survives the initial collection without surrendering her independence, but the contest confirms that Al sees her unusual magical potential as something to cultivate and own. Back at the church, Ceri continues recovering and begins acting as Rachel's teacher in older forms of magic. Nick remains absent, and Rachel receives no reassurance that their relationship will resume. The immediate demon visit ends, but the marks and bargains connecting Rachel to Al remain active.

Piscary's imprisonment has created uncertainty among Cincinnati's vampires rather than freeing Ivy and Kisten from everything he shaped.
