Returning from Milu with proof of GrayCris's illegal salvage operation, the SecUnit is traveling under a false identity toward Preservation to deliver the evidence to Dr. Mensah in person. It is out of practice at being near people it cares about, still passing as an augmented human whenever it has to, and about to discover that its plan has been overtaken by events.

The leader of the survey team the SecUnit once guarded, a planetary administrator of Preservation Alliance and the legal holder of the SecUnit's contract, a technicality she keeps only to protect it. She has spent the time since the survey fighting GrayCris in arbitration over what the company did on that planet, which has made her its most expensive problem.

The survey team's lawyer, now running the legal fight against GrayCris. Blunt, formidable, and not remotely intimidated by corporate security or by the fact that she is operating on a company-owned station.

A member of the old survey team, delighted to see the SecUnit again and entirely willing to say so out loud, which the SecUnit finds harder to cope with than being shot at.

The augmented human from the survey team, still watchful of the SecUnit and still the fastest of the group inside the feed, which makes him valuable in a place where every system belongs to the other side.

A military-grade security construct deployed by the station's corporate security against the SecUnit: larger, faster and far better armed than a standard unit, and operating under full external control with none of the SecUnit's freedom or hesitation. It is the most dangerous opponent the SecUnit has faced.
