GalacTech engineer Leo Graf arrives at Cay Habitat to train quaddies, bioengineered free-fall workers whom the company treats as property. After Tony, Claire, and their infant Andy try to escape, Tony is shot and the family is separated. Artificial gravity then makes the Cay Project obsolete, and GalacTech prepares to sterilize, confine, or kill its quaddie population. Leo and Silver organize a collective flight. Silver's team captures the D-620 cargo jumper, the quaddies expel most downsider staff, and Cay Habitat is converted for transport. A broken vortex mirror and Van Atta's use of Tony as a hostage nearly stop them, but Ti Gulik and Warren Minchenko recover Tony while Leo fabricates a replacement mirror. The combined ship, named Home, jumps safely to Orient with Tony, Claire, and Andy reunited. Leo and Silver become partners, while the free quaddies face an unresolved legal struggle over their status and future settlement.

GalacTech sends veteran engineer Leo Graf to Rodeo to teach construction quality control at Cay Habitat. He discovers that his students are quaddies, people engineered with four arms for permanent free-fall labor and classified by the company as equipment rather than employees. Project manager Bruce Van Atta, once Leo's subordinate, emphasizes profit, while psychologist Sondra Yei tightly controls the quaddies' education and behavior. Leo begins teaching them to value independent judgment and safety integrity. GalacTech's reproductive assignments threaten to separate quaddie welder Tony from his partner Claire and their infant son, Andy. The family stows away aboard a shuttle, hoping to reach Orient, but an itinerary change strands them under Rodeo's gravity. Van Atta conceals their identity from security and has Silver drugged for information. During the search, security captain George Bannerji mistakes the family for dangerous experimental subjects and shoots Tony. Leo summons Warren Minchenko to treat him and strikes Van Atta when the manager manhandles Claire. Vice President Apmad arrives to find Tony gravely wounded, Claire and Andy in custody, and Van Atta's attempt at secrecy exposed.

The inquiry into Tony's shooting reveals a greater danger. A new Orient tax and the advent of artificial gravity destroy the Cay Project's commercial rationale. GalacTech plans to close it by sterilizing the quaddies, ending existing pregnancies, and confining the population on Rodeo, with death also considered permissible under their corporate classification. Van Atta separates Claire from both Tony and Andy. After Claire nearly takes her own life, Leo first considers seeking legal recognition elsewhere, then realizes there will be no outside assignment through which to escape. Leo decides to turn Cay Habitat into the core of a colony ship. Silver brings him into a hidden quaddie clubhouse and becomes the main organizer. Their plan requires removing the downsider staff, recruiting dismissed jump pilot Ti Gulik, and capturing a cargo jumper. Leo secures materials under cover of dismantling work, while Silver recruits a trusted crew. Ti joins under a staged kidnapping story that may protect him if the attempt fails. As Silver, Zara, Siggy, John, and Ti depart on the capture mission, obstacles multiply. Tony remains held downside, Van Atta disrupts Leo's takeover plan, and forced sterilizations begin. Claire overpowers doctor Curry and escapes the infirmary, pushing the conspiracy toward open action.

Silver's team boards and captures the Galactic Superjumper D-620. When its jump pilot resists, Silver wounds him, then sends him and the ship's engineer away in a life pod. At Cay Habitat, Claire hides with pregnant quaddies while Leo waits for essential fuel rods. He then stages a depressurization emergency that concentrates the downsider staff in detachable areas. The quaddies expel Van Atta, Sondra Yei, and most of their colleagues in a separated module, making the revolt irreversible. Warren Minchenko and Mama Nilla independently choose to remain. Warren is needed by the pregnant population and asks that his wife, Ivy, be recovered from Rodeo. Mama Nilla refuses to abandon the children, and Claire regains Andy. The quaddies begin reshaping the habitat into acceleration-ready sections for a one-way colony flight. Their escape stalls when a runaway pusher destroys the D-620's portside vortex mirror, making a jump impossible. Van Atta then presents the injured Tony as a hostage and threatens him to force surrender. Tony tells Leo to continue. Ti commits to a rescue mission for Tony, while Leo faces the need to fabricate a replacement mirror from available materials.

Ti Gulik flies Silver and Warren Minchenko to a concealed landing site on Rodeo. Ivy Minchenko reaches them, while Ti and Warren leave to recover Tony. Silver prevents Sergeant Fors and his guards from seizing the shuttle by destroying their vehicle and stranding them alive. In orbit, Leo improvises a method to form a new titanium vortex mirror. Ti and Warren free the injured Tony from the hospital and escape Van Atta's pursuit. Leo's explosive shaping attempt succeeds, and Tony returns to Claire and Andy. He names the joined D-620 and converted habitat Home. As Home accelerates toward the wormhole, Van Atta finds a directive documenting GalacTech's plan to destroy the quaddies. Leo's team installs the replacement mirror, and Ti confirms that it functions. Van Atta pursues with a security party and tries to fire on Home. George Bannerji refuses to use the weapons without proper authorization, and Sondra Yei strikes Van Atta to interrupt his first attempt. Home jumps before he can hit it. The ship emerges safely at Orient, where an official police vessel approaches. Warren prepares to contest GalacTech's case, the quaddies remain self-governing, and Leo and Silver acknowledge their new romantic partnership. Their immediate escape is complete, but legal recognition and a permanent settlement remain unresolved.

Home reaches the Orient side of the wormhole intact, ending Van Atta's immediate pursuit but opening a legal confrontation. The quaddies now govern themselves aboard the captured D-620 and converted Cay Habitat, with an isolated settlement still their goal. Tony is reunited with Claire and Andy. Ti Gulik remains their jump pilot, Warren and Ivy Minchenko are aboard, and Mama Nilla continues caring for the children. Leo and Silver acknowledge that they have become romantic partners. Van Atta, Sondra Yei, George Bannerji, Sergeant Fors, and the security party remain behind after failing to stop the jump. An official police ship approaches Home, and Warren prepares to challenge GalacTech's claims through his connection with the Orient health minister. The quaddies have escaped the planned sterilization, abortion, confinement, and destruction program, but their legal status, political protection, and permanent home remain unsettled.
