In short (whole book)

Humanity's claim that it can disable wormhole networks wins captured Maxolhx warships and creates room for negotiations, but the claim is largely a bluff. Bishop and Skippy prove that controlled solar flares can slowly move the cloud threatening Earth, while political division, a Bosphorok raid, and Maxolhx manipulation repeatedly endanger that work. When multiple Sentinels awaken, Valkyrie recovers a Guardian energy virus and uses Thor to destroy one. Skippy then alters another Sentinel's authentication system, sending several machines back into hibernation, but Valkyrie vanishes and the Maxolhx and Rindhalu prepare to bombard Earth. Bishop, Simms, and Skippy return with Roscoe, a Sentinel they control, forcing both senior species to halt. Earth survives, but the cloud project is incomplete, some Sentinels remain active, and an unidentified Elder AI still appears to be driving the crisis.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Joe Bishop commands Valkyrie with Skippy, an Elder AI whose abilities have repeatedly protected Earth. Humanity has acquired advanced alien ships and established remote facilities including Fob Jaguar, but remains far weaker than the Maxolhx and Rindhalu coalitions. Bishop's force has also interfered with the ancient wormhole system and encountered dormant Elder machinery, including Sentinels capable of overwhelming modern fleets. Earth now faces an artificial cloud created near Jupiter, with severe climate disruption and social instability already spreading. Bishop has warned the senior species to leave humanity alone and cooperate in removing the cloud. To make that warning credible, he and Skippy arranged network failures that appeared to prove humanity could disable strategically important wormholes. The apparent capability is a deterrent built on deception, and exposure would leave Earth vulnerable. Meanwhile, Skippy's continuing independence, the behavior of other Elder systems, and the eventual status of ancient weapons remain unresolved dangers.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

So far this book: A Jeraptha covert officer learns that humanity's wormhole demonstration has frightened both senior species. On Globacus, falling wreckage devastates the landing force. Irene Striebich rescues David Chica, Janes, and other survivors, but her dropship is crippled, leaving the combined ground force short of supplies and pursued by Kristang troops. Bishop refuses to send Valkyrie blindly through a vulnerable approach and retrieves Flying Dutchman for reconnaissance. In orbit, Derek Bonsu develops a missile attack that lets the UN destroyers defeat the Thuranin force and end its bombardment. On the ground, Chica allows himself to be captured to help the wounded survivors escape. Elsewhere, the Maxolhx ask the Jeraptha Ethics and Compliance Office captain to lure Skippy into an ambush. The captain negotiates for a large transfer of Maxolhx battlecruisers before deciding whether to take the proposal to his leaders.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Bishop reaches Globacus and sends Flying Dutchman with Smythe's rescue force after Chica. Margaret Adams destroys the armored machine guarding him, and engineers recover him alive with injuries expected to heal. Bishop then limits further human involvement in local political fighting and prepares to depart. The Jeraptha ship-transfer meeting proves to be a double-cross against the Maxolhx. Skippy infiltrates the offered ships through their concealed AI systems, disables the accompanying warships, and helps the Jeraptha escape with eighteen battlecruisers and a stores ship. The covert captain transfers all nineteen vessels to humanity and proposes mutual defense, giving both sides an interest in continued cooperation. The victory also exposes a strategic weakness: outsiders can infer that humanity has access to a Maxolhx shipyard. Bishop and Skippy therefore plan to move Ragnar's fabrication resources to Fob Jaguar, while the Maxolhx leadership considers a Doomsday response to its humiliation.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Near Earth, Bishop stops an approaching Pacific conflict by placing two nonlethal Valkyrie railgun strikes near the opposing fleets and ordering them to withdraw. The intervention prevents immediate war but increases political hostility toward him. A scientist proposes using repeated weak solar flares to push the Jupiter cloud beyond Earth's orbit. UNEF approves a test after Bishop has Skippy leak the stalled proposal, and four trials at a Sun-like star show that the method works without destroying an Earth-distance world. The pace remains uncertain and Valkyrie must stay exposed during every cycle. Skippy also preserves his increasingly independent Earth submind, Grumpy, despite the offshoot's distress. The captured battlecruisers face a shortage of irreplaceable jump-drive components, so Valkyrie reopens the route to a Maxolhx battle group previously trapped beyond the galaxy. The force finds a disabled flagship stranded in intergalactic space, and Smythe boards it to stop an automated revival sequence.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

The recovered Maxolhx flagship reaches Earth with frozen survivors and critical parts. Bishop releases two awakened prisoners with an offer to return the others during negotiations. Meanwhile, the Maxolhx activate their incomplete Doomsday ark plan. The Rindhalu discover the Tanagra construction site and destroy the arkships, shipyards, defending fleet, and most of its strategic defenses. Their goal is not to support humanity, but to remove the escape option and pressure both senior species into exploiting human divisions. Preliminary talks produce a promise not to interfere with removal of Earth's cloud, but leave client-species attacks as a concern. That concern becomes real when Bosphorok warships raid Earth, destroying most facilities capable of handling advanced alien technology and killing many specialists before being defeated. UNEF demands another wormhole-network crash in retaliation. Bishop admits to Simms that the earlier crashes were timed diagnostic shutdowns that cannot be repeated. Simms finds a temporary alternative using altered wormhole schedules, keeping the deterrent alive but only as another limited deception.

Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)

UNEF links conventional retaliation against the Bosphorok to a staged disruption of a Maxolhx wormhole network. Jennifer Simms leaves Valkyrie to command Defiant, while Irene Striebich becomes Bishop's executive officer. Admiral Zhao's new Third Fleet defeats several Maxolhx formations and bombards selected Bosphorok military and industrial targets after warnings, demonstrating that regular human forces can win without Valkyrie's direct protection. Bishop and Skippy then make four wormholes appear dormant and broadcast an offer of negotiations. The shutdown can last only days and cannot be safely repeated, but it persuades Admiral Reichert to support talks as a means of learning humanity's weaknesses. The resulting ceasefire bars direct senior-species and client attacks. Behind the agreement, Maxolhx negotiators drug and mislead a Chinese delegate, encouraging China to seize control of Skippy. A rogue group of Chinese officers consequently prepares an operation against Valkyrie. Humanity has secured a pause, but its internal distrust has become the opening its enemies intend to use.

Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)

Valkyrie resumes the long solar-flare campaign under an escort disruption field, but rogue Chinese officers sabotage the formation and send battlecruisers to seize the ship. Skippy distorts their arrival, destroying one attacker and crippling the other. UNEF suspends the cloud operation and imposes security restrictions while treating the conspiracy as a factional act rather than official Chinese policy. Soon afterward, a report links destroyed ships and an inhabited world to an active Sentinel. Jennifer Simms returns as Valkyrie's executive officer while Striebich seeks reassignment. Reconnaissance confirms the Sentinel and finds an unexplained residual signal around wormholes in the area of humanity's first false network crash. A possible refuge at Avalon can support emergency colonists only with extensive work, and it may not be safe. A second Sentinel attacks another inhabited world, then Skippy identifies a different signature at another site. With multiple machines active and the senior species blockading Earth, Bishop sends transports onward to Avalon and commits Valkyrie to finding a way to stop the Sentinels.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

A third Sentinel attack is reported. Valkyrie probes a dead Sentinel inside the Roach Motel and learns that Guardians killed it with an energy virus that drains power. The crew traces the discarded remnants of such a virus to a derelict Thuranin cruiser, captures a viable sample, and places it in containment. Skippy also discovers that previous wormhole resets amplified a galaxy-wide Sentinel wake-up signal, probably sent by another Elder AI. The signal has reached Avalon. He reveals that his own autonomy depends on a firewall separating his personality from inaccessible original instructions, and that he cannot absolutely exclude hidden influence. To protect the nearly four billion inhabitants of P3X-957, Bishop chooses an unauthorized interception. Thor carries the virus payload, while an Elder communications node serves as a remote lure. Valkyrie deploys the trap and Skippy transmits the signal. The Sentinel emerges through the communications-node wormhole and neutralizes the leading missiles. Thor breaks away with the concealed payload while the wormhole expands and exposes Valkyrie to radiation. Unable to escape by jumping, Bishop and Simms activate Valkyrie's nuclear demolition timer in an effort to break the link.

Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)

Skippy develops a way to make awakened Sentinels reject their wake-up authorization, but he must approach one at extremely close range. Admiral Reichert supplies hundreds of Maxolhx ships as a diversion while retaining plans to exploit Valkyrie's loss. The assault damages a Sentinel enough for Skippy's hack to work, but the machine traps Valkyrie and pulls it into its hibernation transition. Flying Dutchman escapes with orders to warn Earth. Although several Sentinels return to sleep, Reichert ends the ceasefire and joins a force of more than 8,000 Maxolhx and Rindhalu ships around Earth. Chang and Nagatha delay them with false Elder-weapon codes, but the Rindhalu expose the deception and Reichert orders bombardment. Bishop interrupts him when Valkyrie returns from an unexplained higher-dimensional delay. Bishop, Simms, and Skippy have gained control of Roscoe, a Sentinel whose demonstration forces both senior species to halt. Earth survives and humanity gains a new deterrent. The cloud-removal program remains incomplete, some Sentinels are still active, Grumpy remains separate, and the Elder AI behind the wake-up signal has not been found.

How does it end? (ending)

Skippy's authentication hack sends several Sentinels back into hibernation, but the targeted machine pulls Valkyrie into its transition and the ship is presumed lost. Admiral Reichert ends the ceasefire, and more than 8,000 Maxolhx and Rindhalu ships gather around Earth. Chang and Nagatha use false Elder-weapon codes to delay the attack, but the deception fails. Bishop interrupts the bombardment order when Valkyrie returns from an unexplained higher-dimensional delay with Simms, Skippy, and Roscoe, a Sentinel now under their control. Roscoe's demonstration forces both senior species to stand down and gives humanity a powerful immediate deterrent. Flying Dutchman, Zhao's fleet, and the broader human alliance survive. The solar-flare campaign against Earth's cloud remains unfinished, Avalon is only a provisional refuge, Grumpy remains separate, and the wormhole wake-up signal still points toward an unidentified Elder AI. Skippy's inaccessible original programming also remains a risk, so Bishop's next strategic problem is unresolved.
